State Department: Turkey - Public Announcement, March 15, 1999

Turkey - Public Announcement
March 15, 1999

Since early March the frequency of terrorist actions in Turkey has increased. The latest attacks may be linked to the February 15 capture of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan. On March 15 the PKK warned tourists against travel to Turkey. The most recent attacks have not been directly targeted against tourists or foreigners, but have caused injuries and deaths among the Turkish public. Turkish police authorities have made a number of arrests in connection with the attacks. Security has been increased, and steps are being taken to enhance public safety. The majority of the attacks have taken place in Istanbul, although incidents in Ankara and other parts of western Turkey have occurred.

American citizens visiting or residing in Turkey should exercise appropriate security precautions and carefully consider whether to avoid places where large crowds congregate. For further information regarding travel in Turkey, please consult the State Department's Consular Information Sheet for Turkey.

This Public Announcement expires May 15, 1999.
