State Department: Albania - Travel Warning, August 18, 1998
Albania - Travel Warning
August 18, 1998
The Department of State warns against all travel to Albania because of
recent declarations by Islamic extremists against the United States and its
citizens. Given the possibility that the U.S. Embassy's personnel and
facilities in Tirana, Albania, could be among the targets of a terrorist
attack, on August 14, 1998, the Department of State ordered the departure
of Embassy personnel in nonemergency positions and families of Embassy
personnel. The U.S. Embassy is presently further reducing its staff.
U.S. citizens in Albania are urged to consider their personal security
situation and, if appropriate, to leave Albania. The U.S. Embassy will be
able to provide only emergency citizen services.
No. 98-040
This Travel Warning supersedes the Public Announcement issued August 13,
1998, and the Travel Warning issued
August 14, 1998, to reflect further reduction in Embassy staff.
