State Department: Albania - Travel Warning, August 14, 1998

Albania - Travel Warning
August 14, 1998

The Department of State warns against all travel to Albania. Because of recent declarations by Islamic extremists against the United States and its citizens, and because of the possibility that the U.S. Embassy's facilities in Tirana, Albania could be among the targets of a terrorist attack, the Department of State has ordered the departure of Embassy personnel in non-emergency positions and families of Embassy employees. American citizens currently in Albania are urged to consider carefully their personal security situation and, if appropriate, to depart Albania. The U.S. Embassy will be able to provide only emergency citizen services. The airports are open and commercial flights are available.

For further information on travel to Albania consult the Department's latest Consular Information Sheet on Albania and its Public Announcement of August 13, 1998.

No. 98-037

This Travel Warning supersedes the Travel Warning issued June 18, 1998.
