ANNAN NAMES PANEL ON SANCTIONS AGAINST ANGOLA'S UNITA

  • Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in a letter to the Security Council, informed it of his appointment of five experts to serve on a panel to monitor the implementation of sanctions against the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). (The action was taken in accordance to Resolution 1295 on Angola.)

  • The five panelists are Christine Gordon of the United Kingdom, Juan Larrain of Chile, James Manzou of Zimbabwe, Ismail Sekh of (Senegal) and Lena Sundh (Sweden). Larrain was named as chair.


SECURITY COUNCIL TO HOLD MEETING ON CONFLICT PREVENTION

  • The Security Council met in closed consultation this morning on the subject of Conflict Prevention. Speaking to journalists afterwards, Council President and Ambassador of Jamaica to the United Nations, Patricia Durrant, announced an open meeting on Conflict Prevention on 23 July chaired by Jamaican Foreign Minister Paul Robertson.

  • Later the Council held an open meeting in which it adopted a Presidential Statement marking the fifth anniversary of the events at Srebenica. It also observed a minute of silence in honor of the victims.

  • The Council also voted unanimously to extend the mandate of the UN Military Observer Mission in Prevlaka (UNMOP) for a further six months.

  • Following that, the Council was briefed on the situation in Kosovo by H&eacute;di Annabi, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.

UN WELCOMES RELEASE OF REMAINING HOSTAGES IN FIJI

  • The United Nations welcomed the safe release of the 18 remaining hostages after 55 days of captivity in the Fijian Parliament compound.

  • A formal statement will not be issued until the Great Council of Chiefs concludes its meeting sometime tomorrow.


PALESTINIAN ECONOMIC REPORT RELEASED TODAY

  • UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Terje Roed-Larson, released a report today on the Palestinian economy, which underscores the need for a more rapid pace of institutional and fiscal reforms by the Palestinian Authority, as well as the need for greater mobility for both Palestinians and their products.

  • Speaking from Gaza, Larson said that the ongoing talks at Camp David represent a unique window of opportunity to achieve a lasting peace, and to ensure a durable prosperity for the Palestinians.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • A new African Strategy for an HIV Vaccine, unveiled this morning at the 13th International Conference on AIDS, hopes to fast track HIV vaccine development in Africa to achieve results in the shortest possible time, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)

  • Speaking at the AIDS Conference, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Gro Harlem Brundtland, said that violence against women was an important contributor to the spread of HIV. &quot;We will not achieve progress against HIV until women gain control of their sexuality,&quot; she said.

  • The theme of this year’s World Food Day, to be observed on 16 October, will be &quot;A Millennium Free from Hunger&quot;, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced today.


  • The guest at today's briefing was the Secretary-General’s Adviser for Special Assignments in Africa, Ibrahim Gambari, who spoke to reporters about his visit to Angola and the just released Secretary-General's report to the Security Council on Angola.
