U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT
STATEMENT BY NICHOLAS BURNS, SPOKESMAN
July 23, 1997
ALBANIA: NEW PARLIAMENT
With the convening of the new parliament today, the Albanian people have
reason to be proud of the smooth government transition which they have
achieved since the recent parliamentary elections. While the international
community, particularly the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation
in Europe) under Franz Vranitzky and the Italian-led Multinational
Protection Force, was indispensable in providing the environment for
political reconciliation, it is the Albanians themselves who ultimately
chose to set aside political differences and work together for the good of
their country.
The new Albanian leadership faces serious challenges restoring public order
and building a sound economy. The United States, together with our partners
in the international community, stands ready to assist Albania as it takes
on these difficult tasks. Our cooperation with Albania will continue to be
based on its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and
advancing the process of reconciliation.
