TEXT: ALBRIGHT MEETS WITH GREEK, TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTERS

(State Department release, Madrid, Spain, July 8) (280)

Madrid -- During a meeting at the NATO Summit hosted by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the Greek and Turkish foreign ministers reached "a convergence of views on a basis for promoting better relations," according to James Foley, the State Department deputy spokesman.

In a statement released July 8, Foley said Greek Foreign Minister Pangalos and Turkish Foreign Minister Cem agreed to commit to peace, respect for international law, and respect for each country's sovereignty and legitimate interests in the region. They also agreed to refrain from the use of force in resolving disuputes.

STATEMENT BY DEPUTY SPOKESMAN JAMES B. FOLEY

MEETING OF SECRETARY OF STATE MADELEINE K. ALBRIGHT WITH GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER PANGALOS AND TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTER CEM

Secretary Albright hosted a meeting at the NATO Summit in Madrid between Greek Foreign Minister Pangalos and Turkish Foreign Minister Cem. During their meeting the Turkish and Greek Ministers reached a convergence of views on a basis for promoting better relations based upon:

A mutual commitment to peace, security and the continuing development of good neighborly relations;

Respect for each other's sovereignty;

Respect for the principles of international law and international agreements;

Respect for each other's legitimate, vital interests and concerns in the Aegean which are of great importance for their security and national sovereignty;

Commitment to refrain from unilateral acts on the basis of mutual respect and willingness to avoid conflicts arising from misunderstanding; and

Commitment to settle disputes by peaceful means based on mutual consent and without use of force or threat of force.
