(Begin text)

The United States welcomes the decision by the Turkish parliament to extend the mandate of Provide Comfort II until the end of December. Provide Comfort II is a multilateral operation designed to protect all the peoples of northern Iraq from the depredations of Saddam Hussein. Operation Provide Comfort is working to deter Saddam Hussein's repression of the Iraqi people and prevent a recurrence of the 1991 refugee crisis. Its members are committed to preserving the independence, unity and territorial integrity of Iraq.

The United States deeply appreciates the support of the Turkish parliament in this multilateral effort.
