[02] TOPTAN CALLS ISRAELI ATTACKS ON GAZA STRIP A "HUMAN TRAGEDY"

Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan yesterday characterized the ongoing Israeli campaign on the Gaza Strip as a "human tragedy," urging the international community to take a clear stance against it. "There is no acceptable or justifiable reason for such an assault targeting civilians and children without exception," he said, urging the UN and other international bodies to take a stand against the attacks. Toptan's remarks came during a meeting with his Ethiopian counterpart Teshome Toga in Ankara. On Turkish-Ethiopian relations, Toptan said, "Turkey and Ethiopia enjoy very good bilateral relations. Since 1912, when the Ottoman Empire opened a consulate in Ethiopia, relations have constantly developed." For his part, Toga said relations between the two countries are excellent, adding that the Ethiopian government is ready to help Turkish businessmen who want to invest in the country. Toptan also hosted a luncheon in honor of Toga and his delegation. /Star/

[03] ERDOGAN'S MIDEAST TOUR SET TO PUSH FOR PEACE

Speaking after yesterday's Cabinet meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek said that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set tomorrow to begin a tour of Middle East countries including Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia as part of diplomatic efforts to halt Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip. Stating that the Cabinet had discussed the situation in Gaza, Cicek reiterated that Turkey will continue to promote peace and stability in the region, and that Israel's use of disproportionate force against innocent civilians is casting a shadow over the peace process. /Cumhuriyet/

[04] NSC SET TO CONVENE TODAY

The National Security Council (NSC) will convene today at Cankaya Presidential Palace under the chairmanship of President Abdullah Gul. The council will discuss the course of Turkish-US relations under the incoming Barack Obama administration as well as potential changes and developments in Iraq after the withdrawal of US soldiers, developments in the Middle East, and the ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Palestine. /Star/

    [05] EGYPTIAN FM VISITS ANKARA

On a one-day visit to Ankara, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit yesterday was received by President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan also reportedly called on all countries to take action to provide aid. In related news, at a joint press conference alongside Gheit, Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said, "We call on Israel to immediately stop its military operation against Gaza and to secure a ceasefire. And Hamas should end its activities which could be used as a reason for Israel's attacks." /Milliyet/

    [08] GAZA SLAUGHTER

    BY DERYA SAZAK (MILLIYET)

Columnist Derya Sazak comments on Israel's ongoing air attacks on Palestinians. A summary of his column is as follows:

"President-elect Barack Obama is taking a vacation in Hawaii, and US President George W. Bush is in Texas. Meanwhile, Israel is attacking Gaza. This drive to stop Hamas' missile attacks is bringing an end to hopes for the peace in the Mideast. Two thousand years of hostility are leading to a great humanitarian tragedy at the end of 2008. More than 300 civilians have died from Israel's attacks. Beirut saw a similar slaughter two years ago in because of Hezbollah attacks.

Israel's attacks, while bolstering Iran's assertion that its military can take a 'balancing role,' have put Obama, who will take over the presidency on Jan. 20, in a difficult position.

Before his election, Obama returned from a visit to Middle East hopeful of achieving peace there.

Middle East peace was the most ambitious project of the Bush administration, but like Iraq, it is delivering the Palestinian-Israeli issue in ruins.

Bush was a product of a 'war project.' The Sept. 11 attacks enabled his administration to try to implement its Greater Middle East Initiative. But it failed to complete the Iraq invasion's legs in Syria and Iran.

A military push to eliminate Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program somehow hasn't materialized.

On the other hand, Obama is coming into power by a push for peace opposing Bush's policies. His popularity is sky high. He reassures people, as he speaks the language of the man on the street, pledges to prioritize social and economic policy, direct resources to investment instead of wars and armament, and create new jobs for 3 million people.

But the system is testing Obama!

The war is exploding before the emperor can even be crowned.

If Obama, who won the election with a slogan of change, really intends to change the US, he should oppose the tragedy in Gaza.

We want to welcome 2009 with hope."
