[01] ERDOGAN, BAYKAL CONTINUE TO CAMPAIGN AHEAD OF ELECTIONS
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday visited Mugla and Manisa to
woo voters’ support for his Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the
July 22 general elections. Addressing the crowds, Erdogan criticized the
stance of opposition parties in the aborted presidential election, saying
that if the Motherland Party (ANAVATAN) and Democrat Party (DP) had
participated in the voting, then a President, whose term in office has
ended, wouldn’t have been continuing his tenure. Erdogan further stated
that there were circles which wanted to saw seeds of discrimination within
the nation, but his party wouldn’t allow this. Continuing his election
campaign in Artvin, main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP)
leader Deniz Baykal said that his most significant capital in politics is
his reliability, adding that he is determined to fulfill all of his
commitments after coming to power in July 22 general elections, Baykal
added that CHP government would be different from the former ones and make
radical changes after coming to power. /Turkiye/
[02] ARINC: “THE NEW PARLIAMENT MAY ELECT THE PRESIDENT”
Speaking to the Kanal 24 yesterday, Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc said
that the new president wouldn’t be like President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.
Upon a question about the controversy surrounding Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan’s remarks that he would seek consensus in the presidential
election, Arinc noted that the July 22 elections are already being held as
a result of the crisis stemming from the recent presidential election,
which was blocked by the decision of the Constitutional Court. He added,
“The new Parliament may elect the president.” /All papers/
[03] GUL: “WE WON’T GET PERMISSION FROM ANYONE FOR A POSSIBLE CROSS-
BORDER OPERATION”
Speaking en route to Yalova and Gebze yesterday, Foreign Minister Abdullah
Gul said that Ankara wouldn’t get permission from anyone, including the
US for a possible cross-border operation into northern Iraq, adding that it
didn’t need any support for this. Saying that Washington needed the
support of the Kurdish administration to overcome difficulties it faced in
Iraq, so tried to have good relations with the administration, Gul added
that the US wouldn’t be there in the future, but Turkey would continue to
be present in the region. /Turkiye/
[04] SENER: “THE CONSTITUTION STIPULATES THAT PRESIDENT COULD BE ELECTED
EITHER FROM PARLIAMENT OR OUTSIDE”
Speaking after attending the 75th anniversary of the Turkish Language
Association (TDK) yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener said
that there is need to see the parliamentary picture after July 22 general
elections to comment on the next presidential election. Saying that he
wouldn’t vote in next presidential election, since he wasn’t a
candidate, Sener added he believed new Parliament would elect the new
president. “The Constitution stipulates that the president could be
elected either from Parliament or outside,” he said. “I believe it’s
early to discuss this,” added Sener. /Milliyet/
[05] AGAR: “I WON’T FORM A CONSTITUTION WITH INDEPENDENT DEPUTIES”
Opposition Democrat Party (DP) leader Mehmet Agar yesterday visited
Eskisehir Chamber of Industry, where he responded to reporters questions
and said that they weren’t planning to form a coalition with independent
deputies. “The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) might have such
an option, but we don’t,” he said, adding, “All people doing politics
in Turkey should definitely reject violence and state that they have no
link with the terrorist organization. Turkish society is expecting this. We
don’t have desire for this kind of coalition.” Meanwhile, speaking to
Star TV yesterday, opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader
Devlet Bahceli said, “If we have the parliamentary majority in the next
term, we’ll bring back the execution. We’ll hold a referendum, if it is
necessary for the country. If there’s a social demand and if MHP has 367
deputies, we’ll change the Constitution and bring back execution until
the terrorism is terminated.” /Hurriyet/
[06] TUZMEN: “TURKEY IS VERY CLOSE TO FOUR-DIGIT EXPORT FIGURES”
Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony in Mersin yesterday, State Minister
Kursad Tuzmen said that recently Turkey’s exports rose from $17 billion
to $100 billion, adding that Turkey was very close to four-digit export
figures. “I believe that we’ll reach these figures in a short time,”
he said. “Turkey is growing with exports.” /Turkiye/
