[01] TURKISH, GERMAN POLITICIANS,
BUSINESSMEN TO MEET IN BERLIN
Turkish
and German politicians and businessmen are set
to convene for the Berlin Economic Congress
beginning today. During the three-day gathering,
bilateral ties, including political and economic
relations, are expected to be taken up. Turkish
Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his German
counterpart Angela Merkel will deliver speeches
at the opening of the meeting. Erdogan,
accompanied by State Minister for the Economy
Ali Babacan, former Premier Mesut Yilmaz,
opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP)
Deputy Chairman Onur Oyman and a number of
deputies, as well as representatives from
leading Turkish firms, is expected to hold a
bilateral meeting with Merkel to exchange views
on Turkey’s European Union membership bid and
the negotiation process. After his arrival in
Berlin late yesterday afternoon, Erdogan
addressed his countryman, saying that Turkey had
made great strides on its road to the EU
membership. Furthermore, the premier held talks
with former Federal Parliament Speaker Rita
Sussmuth and former Norwegian Prime Minister
Kjell Bondavik. /Aksam-Turkiye/
[02] KUWAITI FM VISITS TURKEY
Kuwaiti
Foreign Minister Sheikh Muhammad Sabah al-Salim
al-Sabah, who is currently visiting Turkey,
yesterday met with his Turkish counterpart
Abdullah Gul. Economic relations and regional
issues, including Iran, Iraq and the Middle
East, were reportedly the focus of their talks.
The two top diplomats told reporters that they
had similar views on Iraq, saying that the
country’s territorial integrity should be
ensured, adding that the Iran issue should be
resolved through diplomatic means. The Kuwaiti
official was accompanied by businessmen, who
stated that they have hopes of buying Halkbank,
Istanbul’s Cevahir Mall and the city’s gas
distribution network. /Turkiye/
[03] FM GUL: “TURKISH-GREEK HOTLINE WILL
HELP AVOID CRISES”
Speaking
about Tuesday’s plane crash over the Aegean Sea,
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul yesterday said
that as a part of new precautionary measures, a
hotline between Turkey’s Eskisehir National
Aviation Center and Greece’s Larisa Center would
be established soon. “It is unfortunate that
such a painful event occurred,” said Gul, adding
that a probe telling where, how, and in what
conditions the event had happened was underway,
and all this would be revealed and mutual work
would be carried out. /Milliyet/
[04] MGK SECRETARY-GENERAL: “NO MILITARY
ACTION AGAINST IRAN EXPECTED THIS YEAR”
While
closely following the nuclear dispute between
the US and Iran, Turkey believes that the
possibility of a war in the region this year
isn’t strong. Developments about Iran marked
National Security Council (MGK)
Secretary-General Yigit Alpogan’s visit to
Russia this week. Alpogan said that during his
meeting with his Russian counterpart Igor
Ivanov, the tension between Washington and
Tehran was discussed. Speaking to Turkish
journalists, Alpogan said that Turkey and Russia
accepted that Iran had the right to use nuclear
energy for peaceful purposes like all countries,
adding, “Turkey doesn’t like having a neighbor
with nuclear weapons. We favor a diplomatic
solution to the nuclear crisis. Considering the
possible damage to Turkey, it’s natural for us
to choose diplomacy and dialogue to persuade
Iran. We have no other choice.” Alpogan
reportedly told his Russian counterpart that
Turkey doesn’t expect US-led military action
against Iran before the end of this year, should
efforts at a diplomatic solution to the nuclear
crisis not bear fruit. /Milliyet/
[05] FIRE AT ISTANBUL’S ATATURK AIRPORT
CAUSES HUGE LOSSES
Wednesday’s fire at a cargo
section of Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport caused a
large amount of damage, including the
destruction of textile products worth around $10
million as well as gold, silver and electronic
equipment shipments. Officials stated that they
did not know the full extent of the damage, but
goods from hundreds of firms were in the
affected area. Fire extinguishers were used
during the day and night to eliminate hot spots,
and officials are investigating whether there
was any leakage from radioactive material stored
in the cargo building. Meanwhile, security
officials are carrying out an extensive
investigation to determine the reason for the
blaze. /Sabah/
[06] EU TO WARN TURKEY AT JUNE MEETING
The European Union is preparing
to give sharp warning to Turkey at the
Association Council meeting to be held in
Luxembourg on June 12. In its draft position
paper to be submitted to Turkey, there are
criticisms on Cyprus, the situation in Turkey’s
southeast, civilian-military relations,
religious rights and the supplementary protocol.
The draft position paper will be discussed by
the Permanent Representatives Committee
(COREPER) and will take its final shape by June
12. /Cumhuriyet-Hurriyet/
[07] US REMOVES AMBASSADOR WHO SAID
“ARMENIAN GENOCIDE” FROM OFFICE
US President George W. Bush has
removed from office Ambassador to Armenia John
Evans, who recently described the events of
World War I as a “genocide,” contrary to the US’
official policy. The White House statement said
that current Ambassador to Tajikistan Richard
Hoagland is slated to take over the post. /Star/
