[01] ERDOGAN’S VISIT RESULTS IN CRISIS DUE TO PKK-AFFILIATED ROJ TV
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in Denmark for an official visit,
yesterday cancelled a joint press conference with his Danish counterpart
Anders Fogh Rasmussen in response to Denmark’s failure to combat the
terrorist PKK and its affiliates. Erdogan refused to attend the press
conference, held after his talks with Rasmussen, as a journalist from ROJ
TV, a PKK-affiliated TV station broadcasting from Denmark, was also present
there. “I strongly regret Erdogan’s reaction,” said Rasmussen later at the
press conference. During their meeting, Erdogan and Rasmussen discussed
both measures against PKK-affiliated ROJ TV broadcasting from Denmark, and
recent humiliating articles about Muslims in the Danish press. /All papers/
[02] GUL, GEN. BUYUKANIT EXPRESS SUPPORT FOR ERDOGAN DUE TO ROJ TV CRISIS
Land Forces Commander Gen. Yasar Buyukanit, who attended a reception
marking the 22nd anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus (TRNC), expressed support for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan’s refusal to attend a joint press conference with his Danish
counterpart Anders Fogh Rasmussen as a journalist from PKK-affiliated ROJ
TV broadcasting from Denmark was also present there. Buyukanit said that
Erdogan’s reaction was appropriate and what he made was right. In related
news, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul also expressed support for Erdogan,
saying that everyone would do the same. /Milliyet/
[03] FM GUL TO MEET MERKEL
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul will hold “critical” meetings on Nov.18, in
Germany. Gul will meet with the Christian Democratic Union leader and
incoming Chancellor Angela Merkel. It is reportedly said that a support
message would be given to Gul at the meeting, but this support would be
expressed clearly by the Social Democrat coalition member. It is reported
that the paragraphs of the coalition protocol relating to Turkey worry
Ankara. The protocol states that the European Union negotiations for
Turkey’s full membership started on Oct. 3, the negotiations will be open-
ended, and that if the goal for the membership realizes, Turkey should be
attached to the EU with a “privileged relation.” Furthermore, during the
meeting, efforts will be exerted to enable a meeting between Merkel and
Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan. /Aksam/
[04] FM GUL CRITICIZES THE INSISTENCE OF SOME CIRCLES TO CREATE SCENARIOS
OF TURKISH-KURDISH CONFLICT
Speaking at Parliament’s Planning and Budget Committee, Gul criticized what
he sees as the “insistence of some circles to create scenarios of Turkish-
Kurdish conflict or enmity” based on the developments in Iraq, dismissing
this speculation as “having no foundation today, nor any in the future.”
“We have lived in peace and harmony with our Iraqi relatives of Kurdish
origin throughout history, and will continue to do so,” Gul said. “This
should also be known and appreciated by communities of Kurdish region and
their leaders, whose security and well-being we have contributed for

[05] ARINC PUSHES TO FIND A FORMULA FOR HEADSCARF
Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc has started to look for a new solution to
the headscarf issue after the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled
in Turkey’s favor in the Leyla Sahin case last week. At a press conference
at Esenboga Airport, Ankara, on his way to Romania, Arinc stated that laws
should clearly define the way how women can legally cover their
heads./Star/
[06] CHP LEADER BAYKAL: “TURKISH JUSTICE BEGINS TO DETERIORATE”
Main Opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal
yesterday lashed out at the government during his speech at a CHP
parliamentary group meeting. Baykal said that Justice Minister Cemil Cicek
should be “miserable” after Van’s Yuzuncu Yil University (YYU) Deputy
General Secretary Enver Arpali’s suicide on Sunday. Such an incident shows
that Turkish justice has begun to deteriorate, Baykal added. Turning his
attention to the recent European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) verdict on
Turkey’s headscarf ban, Baykal said that the government appeared to be on
the whole saddened by the decision. Baykal also touched on the bombing last
week in Hakkari’s Semdinli district, saying, “No matter how sacred the aims,
we’ve always taken a stand against illegal acts and terrorism and we are
determined to continue with this stance. No matter who made what kind of
mistake, the price should be paid.” /All papers/
[07] INTERIOR MINISTER AKSU: “EVERYTHING WILL BE REVEALED”
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) evaluated yesterday the
incidents occurred in Hakkari’s Semdinli district last week. Members of the
Parliament expressed their views about the incidents, while Interior
Minister Abdulkadir Aksu defended that every kind of precautions were
taken. Deputy Mucahit Daloglu asked detailed information about the issue
from the minister saying that they had to get information from the internet
sites. Aksu said, “Everything will be revealed. We are determined to
clarify the case.” /Star/
[08] ITALIAN PRESIDENT TO VISIT TURKEY
Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi is due to arrive in Ankara next
Tuesday for a two-day official visit. During his visit, Ciampi will be
accompanied by Italian investors, industrialists and businessmen. /Star/
[09] TALAT: “PAPADOPOULOS, WHO DECEIVED THE WORLD IS NOW CHALLENGING THE
ENTIRE WORLD BUT TURKISH CYPRIOTS WILL NOT FORSAKE THEIR RIGHTS”
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat, who
yesterday attended ceremonies marking the 22nd anniversary of the founding
of the TRNC, said that the Greek Cypriots violated the rights of the
Turkish Cypriots under the European Union and international law. “Greek
Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos, who deceived the EU and the world, is
now challenging the entire world,” said Talat, adding that Turkish Cypriots
would never forsake their rights. For his part, Deputy Prime Minister
Abdullatif Sener reiterated that isolation of the TRNC should be brought to
an end, adding that the Cyprus issue was a national cause. Sener stressed
that the issue should be solved through the efforts of the United Nations,
but added that Turkey would not accept any plan which forsakes the TRNC.
“Now the world knows that a state on the basis of equal partnership should
be established on the island,” said Sener, adding however that Greek
Cypriots couldn’t understand this. In related news, President Ahmet Necdet

[10] SAHIN: “GOVT. IS TRYING TO SOLVE TURKEY’S MOST PRESSING PROBLEM,
UNEMPLOYMENT”
Addressing his party’s group meeting yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister
Mehmet Ali Sahin said that the government tried to overcome the
unemployment problem, adding that unemployment was Turkey’s most pressing
problem. “We need to create jobs for 700,000 people,” said Sahin and added
that the solution was in the private sector. “The private sector is needed
to be encouraged,” he said, adding that unemployment should be overcome in
order to maintain peace in the country. /Turkiye/

Columnist Oktay Ekþi comments on Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A
summary of his column is as follows:
“When I hear some of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s remarks, I can’t
help saying ‘alas.’ Sometimes you see a leader who has assimilated the
democracy, learned the constitutional order and accepted the basic
principle of the republic, but sometimes the same person speaks like the
chairman of the Association of Religious High Schools. When a cartoon on
Prophet Muhammad was published in the Jyllands-Posten daily in Denmark
recently, Islam countries criticized this and Islam countries’ embassies in
Copenhagen protested the Danish government for this cartoon. When Turkish
Ambassador in Copenhagen Fügen Ok signed the letter with the order of
Foreign Ministry, Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the
government of a secular and democratic country shouldn’t sign this letter.
Obviously, he means to say that if you’re complaining about the cartoon,
you can go to the court, because this is a democratic state of law. He also
meant that the EU membership of a government intervening in a cartoon
cannot be supported.
However, Mr. Erdogan yesterday said that they should respect his religious
values, just like he respects theirs. His expectation is very appropriate
personally, but he could express his criticism personally. The other way is
non-governmental organizations’ (NGOs) making their voices heard and
protest the mentioned daily, or you can go to the court. However, if a
secular state condemns the other state due to the publication of a
newspaper, then people would think that it doesn’t know the rules of the
game. Perhaps what Rasmussen told Erdogan was similar. We understand
Erdogan and actually he expresses his opinions sincerely, because the
concepts of belief and law aren’t on the basis of secular democracy. He
adopted an Ottoman order of society at the schools he attended, where the
relations between the belief and law are ambiguous. In addition, there’s no
problem if there’s no clash between these concepts.”
