[01] ERDOGAN MARKS AKP’S FOURTH ANNIVERSARY, SAYS TURKEY WILL OVERCOME
KURDISH PROBLEM DEMOCRATICALLY
Addressing a ceremony yesterday marking the fourth anniversary of his party,
Justice and Development Party (AKP) leader and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan said that terrorism had no religion, race or nation, adding that
Turkey would overcome the Kurdish problem within the framework of the
democratic state. Erdogan further stressed that a common fight against
international terrorism was needed, and criticized some political leaders
for using terrorism as political fodder. Later, speaking at Ankara’s
Bilkent Hotel, Erdogan stated that it wasn’t only the AKP’s mission to
fight terrorism, adding that all sectors of society needed to work together
towards this goal. “All institutions should cooperate to fight terrorism,”
added Erdogan. The premier also touted recent economic developments, saying
that the government had brought down high inflation from 34% to 8%.

[02] IRAN: “WE’LL CONTINUE TO COOPERATE WITH ANKARA IN THE FIGHT AGAINST
TERRORISM”
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Hasefi said yesterday that
Turkey and Iran were cooperating in the fight against terrorism and that
they would continue to do so. Speaking at a press conference, Hasefi stated
that the Iranian government was determined to fight against all terrorist
groups and that there were cooperative agreements with Ankara to combat
terrorism. /Turkiye/
[03] KYRGYZ PRESIDENT RECEIVES DEFENSE MINISTER GONUL
Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul, who is currently in Krygyzstan, yesterday met
with new Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to discuss a number of issues,
including bilateral relations. During their meeting, Bakiyev said that he
would try to strengthen relations and boost investments between the two
countries. Speaking afterwards, Gonul said that he appreciated Bakiyev’s
warm hospitality, adding that their meeting had focused on defense matters.

[04] AGAR: “THE TERRORIST PKK CANNOT DIVIDE TURKEY”
Opposition True Path Party (DYP) leader Mehmet Agar said yesterday that the
terrorist group PKK couldn’t divide Turkey, because the nation wouldn’t let
it. Agar stated that three years ago, Turkey overcame its fight against the
PKK, but as a result of misguided Justice and Development Party (AKP)
government policies, the nation is now faced with renewed attacks. Agar
also stressed that the government needed to take measures to spur job
growth in the eastern region. /Sabah/
[05] BABACAN CALLS ON TURKISH BUSINESSMEN TO INVEST IN EASTERN ANATOLIA
State Minister for the Economy Ali Babacan yesterday called on Turkish
businessmen to invest in eastern Anatolia, adding that the economic woes of
the region had created a Kurdish problem. “In the long term, our leading
businessmen should invest in the region,” said Babacan, adding that the
government was also working to find ways to improve the region’s economy.
Babacan further touted the nation’s overall economy, saying that it was
very sound and wasn’t being hurt by international developments. Touching on
the current accounts deficit, Babacan said that there was no need for
concern, adding, however, that the government was trying to reduce it.

[07] “SEEING” THE KURDISH ISSUE BY H. BULENT KAHRAMAN (RADIKAL)
Columnist H. Bulent Kahraman comments on the concepts of the Kurdish issue
and Kurdish reality and the difference between looking and seeing. A
summary of his column is as follows:
“Frankly, while reading the news stories following Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Diyarbakir, one gets the impression that Turkey
is a stuck country and feels sad to see that interpretations and
evaluations in the press just sit on the fence. There are hardly any
articles trying to comprehend the issue more deeply and realistically. Now,
the thing we call the Kurdish issue is a more international, concrete and
tough problem than before. When we call this ‘international,’ we need to
return to the above interpretation of being ‘stuck.’ The party in power in
Turkey, the state and its institutions, are being held back by the US and
the European Union. Actually we should see that the latest bomb which
exploded in Britain actually exploded at the Justice and Development party.
It’s difficult for this party, which has an Islamic bent, even if moderate,
to find a place within the EU on the scale of previous eras. What’s more,
Turkey has been fighting with the US. The US is thinking of extending a
longstanding policy it has in this region, provoked by the constantly
rising oil prices, so as to cover Turkey and thus, it will put more
pressure on us. What we call the Kurdish issue first of all means this.
Therefore, now it’s taking the second step of the process which I call
‘being stuck.’ As the terrorist PKK steps up its violence, Turkey begins to
think of how to solve the issue. In this respect, of course bargains are
being made and the PKK is considered an interlocutor and Turkey is making
an international struggle with the concept of the Kurdish issue and the
steps required by it. In 1991 then President Suleyman Demirel said, ‘We
recognize the Kurdish issue,’ and now we have come from the ‘reality’ to
the concept of ‘problem.’ The difference between the concepts of Kurdish
reality and the Kurdish issue are the history and process experienced by
Turkey in a nutshell. This is the crux of the problem. When we go beyond
this, that is, democratization and social transformation, we face the third
stage. When we pass the bright, ostentatious stage, we see that we are only
looking at the Kurdish issue and unfortunately, nobody means to see the
reality.”
