[01] TURKEY PERSUADES THE U.S.
During the two-hour-long meeting with U.S. President Bill
Clinton, Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit managed to persuade
Clinton over the solution to the Cyprus problem. A statement
issued by Clinton saying, 'There should be no return to the
pre-1974 situation', has been announced to the whole world as the
Turkish thesis on Cyprus has been approved. Ecevit said following
the meeting that the meeting had been very friendly and
beneficial and there had been a great consensus of opinion among
the high-level officials of the two countries on every issue.
Meanwhile, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus (TRNC), Rauf Denktas, has been pleased with the results of
the meetings. Denktas stated that he regarded the visit of
President Clinton's Special Envoy for Cyprus, Alfred Moses, to
the Island as 'positive'. /Aksam/
[02] SUCCESSFUL TURKISH FINANCIAL ADMINISTRATOR
A young Turkish businessman, Ahmet Okumus, has been elected the
most successful fund administrator of the last year in the world.
According to a summary published in the 'Wall Street Journal',
the 'Okumus Opportunity Fund', administered by Ahmet Okumus, has
provided an income enjoying a 262.01 % growth rate to its clients
during the last year. The CNN TV station has devoted wide
coverage to the success of Okumus. /Aksam/
[03] HUGE POWER PLANT IN ALIAGA
The first of the five huge power plants planned to be set up in
Aliaga, Izmir, will begin to be constructed in the upcoming days.
The Research Coordinator for Totalgas Energy, Philip Lamboney,
held a press conference yesterday and said that the power plant
will have a 700 megawatt capacity and cost $600 million. The
power plant is expected to begin its output in 2002. /Aksam/
[04] EU-TURKEY TRADE BALANCE IMPROVES
The trade deficit between Turkey and the EU, which had widened
following the Customs Union agreement, is reducing proportionate
to the economic recession in Turkey. However, a balance in
Turco-EU trade has not yet been achieved. /All papers/
[05] ISRAEL AND RUSSIA PLEDGE COMPLETE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
Russian and Israeli officials have promised a 'total technology
transfer' to Turkey if the attack helicopter they manufacture
jointly wins the $3.5 billion Turkish tender for 145 attack
helicopters. In a joint press conference yesterday,
representatives of the Israeli Aerospace Industry (IAI) and
Russia's Kamov company said that the KA-50-2 helicopter would not
only meet all the needs of the Turkish Air Forces, but would also
constitute an opportunity for the transfer of advanced military
technology to the Turkish defence industry. /All papers/
[06] HIGH-LEVEL OFFICIALS IN TURKEY
High-level officials from noted companies such as Renault, BMW
and Nissan have given important signals to Turkey. They arrived
in Istanbul to attend various events and said, 'Turkey is
indispensable'. /Star/
[07] CANDIDATE FOR OIC SECRETARY-GENERAL
Turkey will officially announce its candidacy for the post
of the Secretary-General of the Organization for Islamic
Conference (OIC) on October 1. Ambassador Yasar Yarik will be
revealed as the candidate for OIC Secretary-General. /Turkiye/
[08] MILITARY COOPERATION WITH MALAYSIA
National Defence Minister Sabahattin Cakmakoglu has strengthened
defence industry cooperation with Malaysia. Cakmakoglu delivered
a speech at the ceremony of the signing of a defence industry
agreement between Turkey and Malaysia and said that with this
agreement, relations would further develop. /Turkiye/
[09] TURKISH WOMEN RECEIVE HANDICRAFTS AWARD FROM U.S.
Some Turkish women have received an award for their handicrafts
in the U.S. For working on the handicrafts, Gunsu Gungor and
Sengul Binici, came first in "The Patchwork Contest" organized in
Pennsylvania, according to a written statement issued by the
Ministry of Culture, the Anatolia News Agency reports.
[10] TURKEY AND DENMARK MEETINGS
Turco-Danish regular political meetings will be held in
Copenhagen tomorrow. The Turkish delegation will be chaired by
the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador
Korkmaz Haktanir and the Danish delegation will be chaired by the
Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friis Arne
Petersen. During the meeting, relations between Denmark and
Turkey and the current international and regional problems will
be discussed. /Cumhuriyet/
[11] THIRD DAY OF CROSS-BORDER OPERATION
The intensive military operation, started by the Turkish Armed
Forces (TSK) and aimed at destroying PKK camps in Northern Iraq,
is continuing unabated. On the third day of the operation, there
was an heated exchange between the terrorists in the regions of
Metina and Haftanin and 8 members of the PKK were killed; in the
same region, a soldier, 3 temporary village guards and 2
`peshmergas' died. In addition, 13 terrorists from the PKK
organization have been killed during the crack-down in the
Southeast. Two soldiers and one village guard, who stepped on a
mine, were injured in the high plateau of Farajin, in Sirnak's
district of Beytussebap. Three terrorists from the PKK
organization, who attacked a police vehicle, were killed in
Bitlis' district of Tatvan. Abdullah Ocalan's lawyers came to
Diyarbakir for the members of the terrorist PKK organization, who
are expected to surrender.
The cross-border operation that was organized by the TSK, aimed
at destroying the members of the PKK, who want to settle down in
the camps in Northern Iraq, is ongoing. As part of the operation,
the regions of Metina and Haftanin have been bombed again by
bomber aircraft. Meanwhile, nearly 600 village guards from the
Jiriki, Tatar and Goyan tribes and nearly 1,000 soldiers have
gone to Northern Iraq to join in with the operations. The
`peshmergas' dependent on the Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party
(IKDP) are also acting in support of the operation. /Cumhuriyet/
[12] EARTHQUAKE AND FUNDAMENTALISM ON NSC AGENDA
Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli will attend the meeting of
the National Security Council (NSC) for the first time as Acting
Prime Minister, due to Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's being in
the U.S. During the meeting, work aimed at bringing life in the
earthquake-hit regions back to normal and the precautions to be
taken against fundamentalism in the region will be discussed. The
Minister of Public Works and Settlement, Koray Aydin and the
State Minister responsible for Customs, Mehmet Kececiler, also
have been invited to the meeting. The NSC will hold its September
ordinary meeting at Cankaya Presidential Palace at 15:00, chaired
by the President Suleyman Demirel. /Cumhuriyet/
