[01] HIGH-LEVEL OFFICIALS IN DIYARBAKIR
President Suleyman Demirel, Parliament Speaker Hikmet Cetin,
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, six ministers, nearly 30 deputies,
many businessmen and bureaucrats visited Diyarbakir yesterday.
Demirel, Cetin, Yilmaz and six ministers opened or laid the
foundations of many facilities in various sectors from education
to health, from tourism to industry. Demirel said in a speech
that Turkey would be a very strong country in the 21st century.
After departing from Diyarbakir, Yilmaz went to Istanbul where he
had an unofficial meeting with former Greek Prime Minister
Konstantin Micotakis in Istanbul to attend a wedding at the Greek
Orthodox Patriarchate in the Fener district of Istanbul. /Sabah/
[02] KIVRIKOGLU RETURNS HOME
Chief of General Staff, Gen.Huseyin Kivrikoglu has returned home
after attending the "130th Military Committee General Staffs"
meetings in Brussels. Regarding the meetings, Kivrikoglu said
that recent developments in Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina and
other international issues as well as European security had been
discussed during the meetings. He added that he had held
high-level bilateral meetings while in Brussels. /Cumhuriyet/
[03] WORLD PRESS COUNCIL MEETING ENDS
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz gave a banquet to foreign and
domestic press members attending the 7th International Congress
and 4th General Council of the World Press Council Union in
Istanbul. At the dinner, Yilmaz said claims that Turkey was among
the countries which had a great number of journalists in prisons
were not fair. He added that judiciary decisions given in support
of these claims were actually within the scope of the legal

[04] NEW ECONOMIC MEASURES AGAINST IMKB FALL
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, Finance Minister Zekeriya Temizel
and representatives of the Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) will
hold a meeting today in Istanbul. At the meeting a new economic
package comprising measures to halt the fall in stock exchange
trading, and the tax system applications in 2000 will be
determined. After the meeting the prime minister will hold a
press conference to announce the new economic measures.

[05] FOREIGN MINISTER CEM IN NEW YORK
Foreign Minister Ismail Cem went on Saturday to New York to
attend the 53rd term meeting of the UN General Council. The
meeting, which will continue for two weeks will be opened with a
speech by US President Bill Clinton. Turkey will be represented
at the meeting by Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, who will go to New
York today, and Foreign Minister Ismail Cem. Yilmaz will give a
speech at the Council on 24 September. In his speech Yilmaz will
announce Turkey's candidacy for membership in the UN Security
Council by 2001. It is expected that Yilmaz will meet UN General
Secretary Kofi Annan on 24 September and will organize a press

[06] JATA MEETS IN TURKEY
The Japanese Travel Agencies' Union (JATA), which organizes
agency annual meeting in a different parts of the world, met in
Turkey this year. The Undersecretary of the Tourism Ministry
Fermani Uygun also attended the meeting. After the meeting Uygun
said that it had been decided to improve tourism activities
between Turkey and Japan. /Cumhuriyet/
[07] ERDEMIR ON THE COVER OF R AND D MAGAZINE
One of the leading magazines of the US, "R and D" put Dr. Ali
Erdemir's picture on the cover of its last issue. The magazine
recently put Dr. Erdemir among the most successful 100 scientists
in the world with his discoveries leading to decreasing the

[08] KARAYALCIN IN BRUSSELS
Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Turkish
Parliament, Murat Karayalcin, arrived in Brussels yesterday to
attend a meeting within the structure of the European Parliament.
The meeting, held on invitation of Tom Spencer, Chairman of the
Foreign Affairs Commission of the European Parliament, aims to
take up the issues of stability in southeastern Europe and good
neighbourly relations. Representatives from the European Union
(EU) countries, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Yugoslavia,
Hungary, Croatia, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Russia
and the US will attend the meeting which will end this evening,
the Anatolia news agency reported over the weekend.
[09] IRISH ASSEMBLY SPEAKER IN ISTANBUL
Speaker of the Irish Assembly Seamus Pattison and his five-member
parliamentary delegation arrived in Istanbul yesterday as the
official guests of Turkish Parliament Speaker Hikmet Cetin.
Pattison said in a statement at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport that
his visit aimed to further develop friendship between the
parliaments of Turkey and Ireland. Pattison and his delegation
will visit Ankara on Tuesday to hold official contacts and will
leave Turkey on September 24, the Anatolia news agency reports.
[10] NEW ISTANBUL PROJECT
An "Istanbul European New City Project", which aims to establish
a regional centre for 375,000 people in the Thracian side of
Istanbul, will be realized with the partnership of the French New
Cities High Council and the French public services institution
Suez-Lyonnaise Des Eaux and Turkish Kentimar City Development and
Trade. Within the framework of the project, $5 billion worth of
foreign investments will be achieved and employment for almost
12,000 people will be created. /Sabah/
[11] OIL PRODUCTION IN TURKEY
According to a 1997 "Energy Report" by the Turkish National
Committee of the World Energy Council, when current reserves are
taken into consideration, Turkey has the capacity to produce oil
for 13.4 years. The report notes that 90 % of Turkeys' oil
requirements are being met through imports, and adds that Turkey
has a total of 978.7 million tons of oil including possible

[12] 42,000 COMPANIES IN EIGHT MONTHS
During the first eight months of this year, 41,776 companies, the
capital of which totals TL 443.5 trillion, were established in
Turkey. During the January-August period, on a regional basis,
most of the companies (1,735) were set up in Istanbul. /Sabah/
[13] SERIF CIM DIES IN A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT
Bilecik Deputy from the True Path Party (DYP), Serif Cim, died
yesterday in a traffic accident. The number of DYP deputies has
thus decreased to 95. /Sabah/
[14] BIDDING FOR STRAITS SECURITY NETWORK STARTS
Bidding for the construction of a "Fully Automatic Computerized
Ship Traffic Control" system that will help to provide safe
passage through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits will be
opened today at the Undersecretariat of Naval Affairs in Ankara.

[15] MINISTER OF FORESTRY PROMISES REPLANTING
Minister of Forestry Ersin Taranoglu inspected over the weekend
some destroyed forests in Istanbul. Taranoglu told press members
that his ministry had already started work on replanting trees in
those areas where trees had been burned up in forest fires ten

[16] TURKISH TROOPS PARTICIPATING IN INTERNATIONAL EXERCISES
Turkish troops left Turkey yesterday to take part in "Cooperation
for Peace" military exercises being staged between September
21-28 in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. A departure ceremony was held
at Corlu Airport for the 41-strong Turkish unit. The US,
Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Russia will also
share in the manoeuvres. /Hurriyet/
[17] ROLLING STONES ROCK ISTANBUL
Istanbul resounded Saturday night to the decades-old songs of the
legendary rock group the Rolling Stones. On the occasion of the
celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Turkish Republic,
the Rolling Stones performed at Ali Sami Yen Stadium. Nearly
30,000 Rolling Stones fans attended the concert. /All papers/
