[01] YILMAZ DECLARES EXTRA ANTI-CRISIS MEASURES
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz announced new measures over and above
those announced on August 28, in order to prevent external
factors from aggravating the liquidity shortage and to prevent
this shortage from threatening the government's borrowing
programme. Yilmaz met with members of the Union of Banks
yesterday in Ankara and later on addressed press members. He said
that they wanted to minimize the effects of the recent crisis on
the Turkish economy and in the medium term they wanted to convert
the crisis into an opportunity. Yilmaz insisted that intervention
in financial or any other markets was out of question, and the
government would firmly obey the rules of the free market

[02] BARZANI IN ANKARA
Mesut Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP),
arrived in Ankara yesterday, where he is scheduled to have
meetings with senior Turkish government officials. After talks
with foreign ministry diplomats in Ankara today, Barzani will be
received by Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, Foreign Minister
Ismail Cem and Parliamentary Speaker Hikmet Cetin on Friday. He
will also attend a working lunch given by Foreign Ministry
Undersecretary Korkmaz Haktanir on Friday. /Sabah/
[03] ANKARA CALLS ON GREEK SIDE TO RECONSIDER THE PROPOSAL
Turkey called on Greece and Southern Cyprus yesterday to
reconsider the recent Turkish Cypriot proposal for the
establishment of a Cyprus confederation as an ultimate solution
on the island. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Necati Utkan said a
press conferance yesterday that if the proposal was wasted, the
tension situation on Cyprus might reach even a more agitated
level, which could open the way for the permanent division of the
island. He added that it was a serious proposal without any
tactical aim and based on the realities of the island. /Hurriyet/
[04] ECEVIT BACKS SUGGESTION BY DENKTAS
Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who will visit the Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on Saturday, said yesterday
that he supported a suggestion by President of the TRNC Rauf
Denktas that a confederation should be established between the
TRNC and the Greek Cypriot Adminitration. /Milliyet/
[05] NEIGHBOURS 'COOPERATE' WITH PKK
Turkey's southern and eastern neighbours, Syria, Iraq and Iran,
have reportedly been cooperating with the PKK terrorist
organization to ethnically cleanse their own Kurdish populations.
According to intelligence sources, Iraq has been inciting the
ongoing conflict involving rival Kurdish factions in its north,
while proving the PKK with arms and money. For its part, Syria
has been using force against its own ethnic Kurdistan population
by compelling young people to join PKK. Sources added that
Syria's moves to help PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan was actually a
disguised attempt to ethnically cleanse its own population of
Kurds. Iran also using PKK to sweep out its ethnic Kurdistan
population, according to the sources adding that the three
countries might also be aiming to undermine the current regime in
Turkey by cooperating with the PKK. /Hurriyet/
[06] ARMED ATTACK ON ESENYURT MAYOR
Mayor of Esenyurt, a district in Istanbul, Dr.Gurbuz Capan was
attacked yesterday by a young boy (14). Later the assailant
surrendered to the police. It is reported that the health
situation of Capan was good. Investigations to the incident are

[07] CAKICI FILE IN FRANCE
The Turkish Foreign Ministry sent a file prepared by the Justice
Ministry, which demands the extradition of Alaattin Cakici, the
head of a large criminal organization, to France with a special
courier yesterday. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Necati Utkan held a
press conference yesterday and replied to question of members of
the press. He said that the Turkish Embassy in France would
present the file to French juridical authorities together with a
note. Utkan added that these procedures would be completed by the
end of this week. Turkey wants the extradition of Cakici because
of six crimes he has committed in Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/
[08] NUCLEAR PHYSICISTS MEET IN ISTANBUL
A "Balkan Nuclear Physicists Meeting", during which basic issues
in nuclear physics are explained and the results of daily studies
are discussed, is continuing in Istanbul with the participation
of nearly 100 scientists from 19 countries including Spain,
Yugoslavia, Sweden, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia,
Britain, Belgium, Germany, France, Holland, Italy, Russia,
Slovenia, South Africa, Japan, the US and Turkey. The meeting
organized by the Istanbul University will last until September

[09] SILK ROAD TOUR BEGINS
A tour for the "Silk Road" organized by the Tourism Ministry in
order to promote the caravansaries and inns on the way of the
Silk Road will begin tomorrow with a press conference to be held
by Tourism Minister Ibrahim Gurdal. 36 press members and tour
operators from 17 countries will participate in the tour, which
will end on September 10. /Cumhuriyet/
[10] FRANCE GRANTS RADAR TO GREEK CYPRIOTS
According to an article in the Phileleftheros newspaper published
in the Greek Cypriot Administration, France will grant a new
radar system to the Greek Cypriot National Army. With this new
system, the Greek Cypriot Army will be able to observe Turkey.
The article noted that all the expenses of the new system would

[11] RAPID INCREASE IN IMKB
There was an increase in the Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB)
yesterday. The second greatest increase of 288 points in the New
York Stock Exchange two days ago enabled the IMKB to increase by
5.58 % yesterday. Officials noted that the ups-and-downs in the
index were not so good for the market. /Cumhuriyet/
[12] THREE TURKISH FIRMS VIE FOR EUROPEAN QUALITY AWARD
A member of the European Quality Administration Fund
Administrative Board Hazim Kantarci, yesterday stated that three
Turkish firms, Arcelik, Netas and Beko were qualified for the
finals in the contest for the "European Quality Award". Kantarci
said that three Turkish firms had entered the contest in two
separate categories. While Arcelik, and Netas would compete in
the category of large scale companies, Beko will compete in the
category of small and medium scale enterprises. /Hurriyet/
[13] BMC FOR ENGLISH MARKET
The first Turkish truck BMC Professional, which was displayed at
the Hannover 57th Commercial Vehicles Fair for the second time is
ready for use on the roads of England. BMC wanting to get hold of
10% of the English market where 12 thousand trucks are sold every
year, aims to sell 1,200 trucks to that country. Contacts for the
sale of trucks have already been made and the serial production
of BMC Professional is to start two months later. /Hurriyet/
[14] STRUGGLE AGAINST DRUGS
At a meeting, held in Istanbul in recent days, a series of
decisions were taken aiming to struggle against drugs. The
meeting was chaired by Isilay Saygin, the State Minister
responsible for "woman rights and family" and the head of the
High Council for Struggle against Drugs. A "Narcotics
Intelligence Network" will be built up and an anti-drugs campaign
will be launched to limit the spread of drug addiction. Families,
school administrators, shopkeepers, municipalities and
non-governmental organizations are all expected to contribute to

[15] SETTLEMENT AREA DATING BACK 10,000 YEARS
One of the first settlement areas, which dates back 10,000
years, has been found in Aksaray. During the excavations
carried out by a delegation headed by Prof.Ufuk Esin, Chairman of
the Pre-History Department of the Istanbul University Literary
Faculty in the Asikli village of Aksaray, it has been discovered
that people living in this area were using sundried bricks while
they were building houses and they were engaged in agriculture
