[01] FLOOD CLAIMS SEVEN IN EASTERN BLACK SEA
A flood triggered by heavy rains which began on Friday evening
has devastated a rural settlement in the eastern Black Sea
Region, killing seven people. 50 people who sheltered in a mosque
destroyed by the flood are still missing. Because roads in the
region are closed, rescue operations are insufficient and people
in the region are in serious need. /Hurriyet/
[02] 39 DIE IN ROAD ACCIDENTS
18 people died and 14 were injured in a road accident near the
Central Anatolian town of Nigde yesterday morning when a minibus
carrying farm workers from Mardin to Duzce collided with a truck
and consecutive collisions followed.
In other road accidents which occurred in various regions another
21 died over the weekend. /Hurriyet/
[03] 83RD ANNIVERSARY OF ANAFARTALAR VICTORY
The 83rd anniversary of the Anafartalar Victory will be
celebrated with ceremonies in Gelibolu and Canakkale today. The
celebrations are organized by the Canakkale Governor's Office and
the Headquarters of 2nd Army Corps. /Cumhuriyet/
[04] US AMBASSADOR VISITS EASTERN ANATOLIA
US Ambassador to Ankara Mark R.Parris visited Erzurum yesterday
to make various observations and to hold meetings. Visiting
Erzurum Governor Ahmet Kayhan and Mayor Ersan Gemalmaz, Parris
said that Turkey was important from the strategical standpoint
and was a very significant partner of the US. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] PKK RAIDS VILLAGE IN AGRI
A group of PKK militants raided Soganli village in Van province
last night setting fire to some of the village houses. Military
sources later announced that operations would continue to find
the terrorists who attacked the village. In another incident in
Tokat, a woman terrorist was captured alive. /Sabah/
[06] FRENCH FIRMS LEAD IN FOREIGN INVESTMENT IN TURKEY
French companies lead with one third of the foreign investment
authorizations for the last five years. According to the State
Institute of Statistics Turkey has permitted $12.7 billion in
foreign investment authorization since 1993 and 28 French firms
hold a $3.5 billion part of it. The same sources report that
Germany and US companies are the next biggest foreign investors.

[07] TURKEY TO PRODUCE MISSILES
Turkey has increased efforts to strengthen its air defense
systems against Greece in the West, against Iran in the East and
against Syria in the south. Turkey, which is already planning
joint missile production with Israel against the Iranian
ballistics missile threat, is holding meetings with Britain to
jointly produce land to air short-range Rapier missiles.
It is expected that a British military delegation for the joint
production of 800 Rapier 2 missiles within 10 years will visit
Turkey in the autumn.
Within the modernization programme of the Turkish Armed Forces
(TSK), a seven million dollars project has been started to
produce tanks. Also old tanks will be modernized with an
additional 3 million dollars project. The US firm
General-Dynamics Land Systems, and the US company United Defense,
Germany's Kraus Maffei, Britain's Vickers Defense, the French
company Giat, China's Norinco company and Israil's Military
Industries company are some of the firms that Turkey will invite

[08] TOURISTS VISIT HACIBEKTAS
Haci Bektas Veli, a noted thinker and philosopher, will be
commemorated with various cultural activities in the Hacibektas
district of Nevsehir on August 16-18. The activities will be
attended by high-level officials. Many foreign guests from
Austria, Germany, France and the US are also expected to
participate in the celebrations. /Cumhuriyet/
[09] EASTERN ANATOLIA PROJECT
An Eastern Anatolia Project (DAP) planned for the development of
the Eastern Anatolia region will begin next month, reports the
Anatolia news agency. Preparatory studies concerning the project
have been concluded. A study that will last for one and a half
years will be conducted in order to prepare feasibility reports.
Within this framework, universities with the support of the
public and private sectors, will research many sectors in 17
provinces.
