  • [01] SCHRODER: "TURKEY SHOULD ENTER EU"

    Prime minister nominee from the Social Democrat Party (SPD) for general elections to be held in Germany on 27 September, Gerhard Schroder said in a statement prior to a two-day official visit to the US, that he supported efforts being exerted for the membership of Turkey in the European Union (EU). Schroder made a statement to the Herald Tribune newspaper and said: "I support Turkey's EU membership. However the EU should initially determine a joint immigration policy, which arranges the residence and working conditions for foreigners in EU member countries". Schroder noted that Turkey should be connected to Europe from the political and military standpoint and added that the EU door should always be open to Turkey. /Milliyet/

    [02] FOREIGN CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN THRACE

    Thrace Free Zone (TFZ), described as a prestigious Turkish project, will be completed soon. President Suleyman Demirel and Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz will attend ground breaking ceremonies for the project on August 8. The first stages, with the participation of big investors from Japan and Germany, including the construction of administrative buildings and 15 plants are expected to be completed in six months. The President of Sahinler Holding, Kemal Sahin kicking off project, stated that the TZF is expected to create jobs for a hundred thousand people and will mainly be used by small and medium-scale enterprises dealing in textiles and ready-to-wear clothing. He added that export oriented industries which do not pollute the environment will also be invited to invest in the TFZ. /Sabah/

    [03] DIRECTOR GENERAL OF YAPI-KREDI BANK IN FCI EDUCATI0N COMMITTEE

    One of the oldest factoring chains in the world, FCI, has again elected Rengin Ekmecioglu as chairman of the FCI Education Committee in its annual meeting held in San Diego. Chairman of the Factoring Education Committee Ekmekcioglu has been serving in this capacity for the last three years. /Sabah/

    [04] BAYINDIR-ASTRADI PARTNERSHIP FOR TUNNEL PROJECT

    The Italian Astradi firm and Bayindir Holding will work together for constructing a tunnel through the Mount Bolu, which will reduce the length of the Istanbul-Ankara highway. The partnership, which the two firms call a "joint-venture", has been approved by Yasar Topcu, Minister for Public Works and Housing. /Hurriyet/

    [05] TREASURY CONTROLS WORLD BANK CREDITS

    The control of credits extended by the World Bank within the framework of assistance strategy to Turkey will be done by officials from the Treasury. The World Bank will extend $1.5 billion in credits to Turkey over three years. Within this context, a comprehensive training programme will be conducted for Treasury controllers both in Turkey and in the US. /Milliyet/

    [06] 1322 MISSILES FOR ATHENS

    The US Administration has shown the 'green light' for the sale of 1322 Stinger missiles to Greece. According to information furnished by the US Defense Department, the value of the sale totals $150 million. In addition to Stinger missiles, there are also 188 launchers and supporting equipment. A written statement by the Pentagon regarding the sale said: "This sale will contribute to US foreign policy and national security by developing Greece's military capabilities". Turkey also has land to air Stinger missiles, and produces some parts for these missiles. /Milliyet/

    [07] PKK KILLS 15 SOLDIERS

    15 soldiers were killed and 25 wounded as a result of a PKK terrorist attack at the Incebel Border station, Beytulsebap, on the Iraqi border yesterday. It was later announced that 10 soldiers were taken away by the PKK. According to military sources clashes are still continuing and the PKK has had heavy casualties. /Cumhuriyet/Sabah/

    [08] THY GETS ISO 9001 CERTIFICATE

    Turkish Airlines (THY) has been presented with ISO 9001 education certifactes by the German TUV-CERT Rheinisch-Westfelischer Certification Centre. German officials said that the certificate was given because THY has started to apply a quality administration system and TUV-CERT Method successfully. /Cumhuriyet/

    [09] DENKTAS-CIZOV MEETING

    President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Rauf Denktas received the Russian Foreign Ministry special coordinator for Cyprus, Vladimir Cizov yesterday. At the meeting Cizov claimed that Russian-made S-300 missiles were not a reason for increasing tension on the island, and added that they would not prevent finding a solution to the Cyprus issue. Denktas said however, that missiles had halted the negotiation process. It was later announced that Denktas and Cizov had evaluated recent developments in Cyprus issue. /Cumhuriyet/

    GAP OIL

    Studies on oil explorations in the southeast Anatolia region have had positive results. Assistant to the General Coordinator of the Aladdin Middle East Corporation, Yusuf Dulger said yesterday that they had found new oil reserves that extended from Saudia Arabia through Syria to Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/

    [10] GOVERNMENT NAMES NEW MINISTERS

    Following the resignations of the justice, interior and transportation ministers due to Parliament's decision to announce early elections, the government has named three independents to fill these vacant positions. The government decided on independent Deputy Hasan Denizkurdu for the Justice Ministry post vacated by Oltan Sungurlu; Istanbul Governor Kutlu Aktas for the position of Interior Minister, from which Murat Basesgioglu has resigned; and independent Deputy Arif A. Denizolgun for the Transportation Ministry post vacated by Necdet Menzir. The appointment of the ministers has been approved by President Suleyman Demirel. /All papers/

    [11] SUPREME MILITARY COUNCIL MEETING

    On the first two days of the current Supreme Military Council meetings, commanders are shaping the new command structure of the Turkish Armed Forces. On Monday, at the end of the first day of the Supreme Military Council (YAS) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, the military top brass reviewed their own positions. A decision was also made at this regular August meeting of YAS to expel 24 officers from the military because they were alleged to be affiliated with fundamentalist and illegal activities. /All papers/

    [12] CHESS OLYMPICS IN TURKEY

    Turkey has been chosen as the host for two chess olympics. Before hosting the 2000 Chess Olympics, Turkey will organize a Children's Chess Olympics between 20-31 August 1998 in Istanbul. /Hurriyet/
