[01] DIPLOMATIC TRAFFIC
President of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Federation Eyup Ganic, Algerian
Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Palestinian Minister for Higher
Education Hasan Ashrawi arrived in Ankara yesterday. The guest
president and the ministers will begin their contacts today.
Algerian Foreign Minister Attaf was welcomed by Turkish Foreign
Minister Ismail Cem who noted that Turkey and Algeria were brotherly
countries and said: "We will form a concrete action plan during the
visit of the minister". Attaf and Cem will sign a cooperation protocol
between the two countries today. President Ganic will meet with Deputy
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and Turkish Parliament Speaker Hikmet Cetin
today. Palestinian Minister Ashrawi will also meet with Cem today.

[02] RADAR NETWORK FOR AEGEAN
Turkey has started initiatives for the 'Long Horizon Project' which
has been on the agenda since 1991 but which has not been put into
implementation for various reasons. This project will enable Turkey to
watch the Aegean region with highly-developed radars. Greek islands,
which are close to Turkey's shore, are a serious obstacle to Turkey's
observance of strategic areas in the Aegean. On the other hand, Greece
can watch Turkey by using cheap and less-developed systems based on
these islands. The Turkish Defense Industry Undersecretariat will put
out a tender for the project in autumn on behalf of the Turkish Naval
Forces Command. With this project, illegal activities such as narcotic
and human trafficking will be brought under control. /Cumhuriyet/
[03] TRNC EXPORTS MEDICINE
The Pharma Mondial medicine plant in the Turkish Republic of
Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is exporting medicine to the Caucasian countries,
Africa and Britain. The Administrative Director of the plant, Resat
Acar, noted that medicine production was aimed at domestic, and
especially foreign markets. Acar said that they would also export
medicine to Pakistan in the near future. /Cumhuriyet/
[04] FORBES' MAGAZINE LIST
Three Turkish tycoons have made it to Forbes magazine's
world-acclaimed list ranking the world's richest billionaries. Rahim
Koc and the Koc family of Koc Holding, along with Sakip Sabanci and the
Sabanci family of Sabanci Holding shared 56th place on the list of 200.
Koc Holding and Haci Omer Sabanci Holding, each with an estimated value
of $5 billion, were tied with other groups: Ten Fong and Robert Ng of
Singapore of real estate fame and Gad Rausing and family from Sweden,
whose main business is packaging. The other Turk on the list -in the
148th place, together with the owners of Hermes International- is Ayhan
Sahenk and family, owner of Garanti Bank. /All papers/
[05] WHITE HOUSE STATEMENT
White House Spokesman Mike McCurry noted that smuggled petroleum
was entering Turkey from Iraq, but only in small quantities. McCurry
replied to questions from New York Times journalists last Friday and
pointed out that they had conveyed the issue to Turkish officials and
said that the Turkish government had declared that they would deal with
the issue. McCurry stated that Turkey had suffered heavily from UN
sanctions imposed on Iraq. /Cumhuriyet/
[06] 120 KG HEROIN SEIZED
The Izmir Head Office for the struggle against narcotics seized 120
kg heroin in Cesme over the weekend. It was later announced that the
estimated value of the heroin was TL 1.2 trillion and that four
foreigners had been arrested in connection with the incident.

[07] FOUR CHURCHES TO BE RESTORED
Minister of Culture, Istemihan Talay said that four churches in
different cities are to be restored and opened up for Christian worship.
Talay noted that the Saint Paul Church in Tarsus, Aya Nicola Church in
Demre, Antalya, and one in Goreme and another in Antakya will be
restored for worship and visits. /Milliyet/
[08] TURKEY AND GREECE IN EUROFOR
In 1999, Turkey and Greece will participate to the Mediterranean
Peace Force (Eurofor), established in 1996 by France, Portugal and Spain
to protect security in the Mediterranean. French, Italian, Portuguese
and Spanish Defense Ministers held a meeting the day before yesterday in
Spain during which they decided to include Turkish and Greek forces in
the Eurofor force in 1999. /Hurriyet/
