[01] COOK TO VISIT TURKEY TOMORROW
British Foreign Minister Robin Cook will visit Turkey tomorrow.
The main item on Cook's agenda will be Turkish-EU relations and the
Cyprus problem. During his visit, Cook will meet with his Turkish
counterpart and many high-level officials. Cook will propose
EU-Turkish Association Council meeting to be held on May 25.

[02] TURKISH MARCH IN NEW YORK
The 17th traditional Turkish march, which brings together Turks
and those of Turkish origin living in the US, was held in New York
over the weekend. Mayor of New York Rudolf Guliani announced 10-16
May as "Turkish Heritage Week". The march, organized by the
Turkish-American Associations' Federation, was attended by Turkish
Ambassador to Washington Baki Ilkin, Turkey's UN Permanent
Representative Volkan Vural and Turkish Consul-General in New York
Fuat Tanlay and many other high-level Turkish officials. /Milliyet/
[03] KARADAYI VISITS MOSCOW
Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen.Ismail Hakki Karadayi begins a
five-day official visit to Moscow today with a heavy agenda of tough
issues that recently have brought Turkey and Russia to odds.
Gen.Karadayi's visit designed to help thaw the current icy relations
between the two countries, has focused attention on whether he can
reach a solution with the Russians on the issue of the controversial
S-300 missiles that are scheduled to be transferred to Greek Cyprus
this August by Russia.
Meanwhile, US President Bill Clinton, who attended G-8 meetings
in Britain over the weekend, expressed his concern over the deployment
of Russian-made S-300 missiles in Greek Cyprus to Russian Head of
State Boris Yeltsin. /All papers/
[04] ARSON IN ATHENS
The car of Anastasia Konstantinidu, who is working at Turkey's
Consulate-General in Athens-Pire as a secretary was set on fire
yesterday morning. According to police information, Konstantinidu's
car was badly damaged. A person who phoned SKY radio claimed that a
protest organization 'Incendiaires de conscience' was responsible for
the attack. /Milliyet/
[05] MONEY LAUNDERING UNDER SCRUNITY
The battle against money laundering is again on the agenda of the
Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the
Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. The first test will come
during the OECD's general assembly meeting taking place in Brussels on
June 29. Turkey will be represented by a delegation led by Nejat
Coskun, chairman of the commission responsible for investigating
financial crimes. Turkey will explain the measures it has taken to
fight money laundering, the legal amendments it has made to related
regulations and other changes under consideration. Turkey will face
its main test on this issue in November. The Financial Action Task
Group, which the OECD has constituted to fight against money
laundering, will focus on Turkey this year.
[06] HOLBROOKE TO VISIT CYPRUS AGAIN
Richard Holbrooke, US Cyprus special envoy, will visit Cyprus
again in June. Holbrooke, who held contacts in Cyprus at the
beginning of May, could not achieve any results during his shuttle
diplomacy between the representatives of the two communities on the

[07] IMAM KILLED IN ARMED ATTACK
Hizir Ali Muratoglu, the son-in law of Mahmut Ustaosmanoglu who
is publicly known as "Mahmut Hoca", was killed in an armed attack
while he was giving a course at the Ismail Aga Mosque, the Anatolia
news agency reported yesterday. An unindentified gunman attacked
Muratoglu, the imam of the Cukurcesme Mosque in Istanbul's Fatih
district at 11:30 a.m.
[08] EGYPT TO HOST KURDISH MEETING
Egypt will host a Kurdish meeting to be held on May 27. Egypt
will host the meeting via a non-governmental organization called the
Africa-Asia Solidarity Organization based in Cairo. /Cumhuriyet/
[09] MILITARY VEHICLE HITS MINE
A military vehicle hit a mine in the Catak district of Van
yesterday and one Turkish soldier died and one soldier was wounded.
It is reported that the road had been mined by members of the PKK
terrorist organization. /Cumhuriyet/
[10] ENERGY AND NATURAL SOURCES MINISTRY OFFICIALS VISIT JAPAN
A delegation from the Energy and Natural Sources Ministry went to
Japan yesterday where they will examine the nuclear plants belonging
to firms in a consortium which has put in a bid for the construction
of the Akkuyu Nuclear Plant. /Hurriyet/
[11] WORLD BANK EXTENDS CREDIT FOR EDUCATION
A delegation including representatives of the Ministry of
Education and the the Higher Education Council will go to Washington
next week for a meeting with World Bank officials who will offer them
600 million in new credit for the eight years compulsory education
programme. Conditions for repayment will also be determined during
