[01] 797 TERRORISTS KILLED IN NORTHERN IRAQThe Twilight cross-border operation initiated in Northern Iraq by the Turkish Armed Forces has been continuing for three weeks. So far, 797 PKK terrorists have been killed, 18 terrorists have been apprehended and 17 other have given themselves up. According to the reports, 10 percent of the terrorists killed were women. Military officials describe the operation as one of the most successful initiatives carried out against the PKK terrorist organization. During the operation PKK's stronghold, the Zap camp has also been destroyed.Meanwhile, Iran renewed its call for Turkey to withdraw its forces from Northern Iraq. /Hurriyet/ [02] ISRAEL ARMY CHIEF TO PUSH TANK DEAL IN TURKEYIsrael's Chief of Staff, General Amnon Lipkin Shahak will try to persuade Turkey during a two-day official visit to replace its armoured vehicles with Israeli Merkava III tanks. Shahak arrived in Ankara on Sunday for meeting Turkish President, Prime Minister and Chief of General Staff. Shahak's visit was a further sign of deepening military cooperation between the two countries.Shahak, due to return to Israel on Wednesday, visited the Mausoleum of Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, on Sunday right after his arrival to Ankara. /Milliyet/Cumhuriyet [03] ANKARA TONES UP RESPONSE TO RUSSIAAnkara criticised Russia in two separate statements issued on Friday; one concerned the deployment of Russian S-300 missiles to Greek Cyprus, the other reffered to an incident where a Russian helicopter was allegedly fired on by Turkish troops over the Turkish-Georgian border, the Anatolia news agency reported.[04] US ADMITS 'DIFFERS' WITH GREECE ON PKK AND DHKP/CThe U.S. State Department admitted on Friday that the Clinton administration its "differences" with Athens concerning the presence of the PKK and DHKP/C, both of which were branded "foreign terrorist organizations" by the department last week. Both maintain offices in Athens.Deputy spokesman Jim Foley said that they routinely exchanged information on the PKK and they were aware of periodic reports of PKK operational activity in Greece. However, the United States has never categorised Greece as a sponsor of terrorism. /All papers/ [05] WAR GAMES IN CYPRUSWithin the framework of a joint military exercise, Nikiforos 97, conducted by Greece and Greek Cyprus in Southern Cyprus, Greek jets violated Cyprus air space. Turkish officials reported that two F-16 Greek jets invaded Turkish air space and that Turkish jets followed them till Baf.President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Rauf Denktas said that with the Nikiforos 97 exercise in Southern Cyprus, the world understood the real intension of Greek Cyprus. Meanwhile, a Civil Defense 97 Exercises started in northern Cyprus on Sunday. /Milliyet/Cumhuriyet [06] ECEVIT STARTS SCANDINAVIAN TOUR OF PERSUASIONDeputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit will start a three-day official visit to Sweden and Finland today. The aim of the visit is to enchance bilateral relations and to continue Ankara's European tour to step up Turkey's EU bid before the Union spells out its enlargement decisions at the December summit.Ecevit will meet Swedish Premier Goran Persson and will adress the Foreign Politics Institute on "Turkey in the New World." He will then proceed to Finland on Wednesday to attend the Parliamentary Assembly where he will meet with Finish Premier Paavo Lipponen and Speaker of the Parliament. /All papers/ [07] PKK ATTACKS IN THE BLACK SEA AND SOUTHEAST ANATOLIA REGIONSPKK terrorists opened fired on a convoy, returning from a funeral ceremony, killing two and wounding nine civilian between Sebinkarahisar and Alucra in Black Sea region.In another incident, PKK terrorists opened fire to a cafe killing one village guard and wounded three. Meanwhile two police were killed and two of them were wounded as a result of a fire opened by PKK terrorist in Lice, Diyarbakir. Cumhuriyet/Hurriyet [08] HOBROOKE IN ANKARASpecial Representative of the U.S. President Bill Clinton to Cyprus, Richard Holbrooke is expected to come to Ankara today. It is reported that Holbroke will meet with President Suleyman Demirel, Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and Foreign Minister Ismail Cem to dicuss the recent tension between Turkey and Greece. /Cumhuriyet/[09] VURAL: TURKS ARE PART OF GERMANTurkey's Ambassador to Germany Volkan Vural said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the Foreign Entrepreneurs Day that the Turkish community in Germany has been facing the structural change. Volkan said that Turks were permanent part of Germany and had adopted the distinctive conditions of the country. He added that the number of Turkish entreprenuers in Germany had doubled in the last decade. He also called on Turkish and German entrepreneuers to invest into Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/[10] GEN. BIR CRITICIZES UN, PRAISES NATO, WEUDeputy Chief of General Staff General Cevik Bir said in London on Friday that NATO and the Western European Union (WEU) was better than the United Nations (UN), which remains incapable of solving disputes, conflicts or civil wars. General Bir arrived in London on Thursday to participate in a seminar entitled "The Security Issues of the Present and Coming Century." During the seminar, General Bir gave a speech entitled "Civil Wars and Interventions to Solve Disputes." All papers[11] PRISON REBELLIONPrisoners from the Bayrampasa Prison that were to be transfered to another prison set yesterday to fire three prison sections. The prison administration managed to establish control on the situation within a short time. Sabah/Cumhuriyet[14] GARANTI BANK ISSUES $ 115 MILLION BONDSA seven-year, $ 115 million bond issue of Turkish Garanti Bank in the U.S. private placement market on Wednesday was over subscribes, the private Turkish bank said in a written statement on Thursday. It said the brokerage firm JP Morgan was the placing agent of the bond issue and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) was the structuring agent and lender of record. /All papers/[15] KAV WOOD INDUSTRY, SWEDISH MATCH TO FORM JOINT VENTUREKav Wood Industry signed an accord to form a joint venture with Swedish Match A.B. to sell matches, cigarette lighters and tobacco products in Turkey and the Caucasus, the Turkish match producer said on Thursday.
