Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press
this morning.
[01] IMPROVEMENT IN TURCO-ARMENIAN RELATIONS
Positive signs are starting to come especially from Turkish
administrative and business circles regarding the normalization of
Turco-Armenian relations. Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz announced
recently a governmental decision to strengthen the economy in the border
regions by opening the Alican and Dogukapi border gates. As Foreign
Minister Ismail Cem prepares for a visit to Azerbaijan, Ankara has again
started to discuss widely the future of Turco-Armenian relations which
is one of the main issues on the Turco-Azerbaijani agenda, while
positive signs are given for the solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh
territorial dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan. /All papers/
[02] HUMAN RIGHTS SUMMIT
The government has rolled up its sleeves for ending human rights
violations in Turkey. Tomorrow the Human Rights High Coordination
Council will convene to take in hand this controversial issue.
Representatives of civil organizations have also been invited to attend
the meeting that will be chaired by State Minister Hikmet Sami Turk.
The meeting is being held on the eve of a visit by a European Human
Rights Commission delegation to Turkey. /All papers/
[03] TURKEY TO PRODUCE PAY PHONES
The Alkatel Group, one of the leading companies in the field of
telecommunications technologies, has announced its decision to shift a
part of its telephone production to Turkey. Alcatel Teletas, Alkatel's
partner in Turkey, will undertake the research and development,
production and marketing of automatic telephones, and will also
undertake the management of a telephone factory set up by Alkatel in

[04] EU AFRAID OF TURKEY
The Turkey Research Center (TAM) has compared Turkey to the
countries labelled by the EU as "EU cand.date members". The Center
director Prof.Dr. Faruk Sen noted that if Turkey becomes an EU member,
it would become a heavy burden for EU regional, social and agricultural
funds. In addition, Turkey would be represented by 81 deputies at the
European Parliament and would be able to play an effective role in
defining EU general policies. According to Sen, the EU is afraid of
these prospects and is shying away from integration with Turkey in an
effort to escape the complicated consequences of such a move. /All

[05] AUTOMOBILE GIANTS MEET IN IZMIR
Leading automobile producers will meet at the 66th Izmir Fair to
exhibit their latest achievements in automobile technology. This year a
record number of companies, including Opel, Tofas, Subaru, Hyundai,
Mercedes, Volkswagen, Renault and Ford will participate in the fair.

[06] TURKEY IS THE NEW BASE OF PEPSI COMPANY
PepsiCo Company has decided to make a $ 40 million investment in
Turkey. Officials of the Company said that they would invest in the
Turkish Fruko-Tamek Company, which is their oldest international
partner, in return for a 11.75 percent share. They added that there was
a great investment potential in Turkey and they gave great importance to
the Turkish market. /Sabah/
[07] WORLD WATER ISSUE TO BE DISCUSSED IN TURKEY
The development and finance of water projects in various places
throughout the world will be discussed in a conference on "The Financial
Future of World Waters" in Istanbul in September. The conference,
organized by the International Herald Tribune under the auspices of
President Suleyman Demirel, will be held between 30 September-1 October.
Demirel will deliver an opening speech at the conference to be attended
by the Bangladeshi President, the Pakistani Prime Minister and officials
from the World Bank in addition to many other officials. /Hurriyet/
[08] CAPACITY UTILIZATION REACHES 79.2 %
According to State Institute of Statistics (DIE) data, the capacity
utilization rate in the manufacturing sector reached 79.2% during the
April-May-June period of 1997. This rate was 77.8 % during the
corresponding period last year. /Hurriyet/
[09] SUBWAY RAILWAY CARRIAGES TO BE PRODUCED IN TURKEY
The railway carriages of the Istanbul subway will be produced in
Turkey in the near future. The Istanbul subway is expected to be opened
by the end of next year. Of the total 100 railway carrriages, 32 will
be imported from France and the rest will be produced in Turkey by
Turkish manufacturers. /Hurriyet/
[10] CLASH WITH PKK MILITANTS
A member of the PKK terrorist organization was killed during a PKK
assault against a police station in the Elbistan district of
Kahramanmaras. Terrorists who raided the Kamisli Village in Hakkari the
previous night killed Mahmut Ozbek, the nephew of a local top-level
official, Fevzi Ozbek. /Cumhuriyet/
[11] FIFTH THY AIRBUS ARRIVES IN TURKEY
Another Airbus A-340 aircraft was added to Turkish Airlines (THY),
which has the youngest fleet of passenger planes in Europe, during a
ceremony yesterday. The Airbus, called 'Adana' and worth $103 million,
came from France. /Hurriyet/
[12] NATIONAL YOUTH TEAM DEFEATS WELSH TEAM
The Turkish National Youth Team defeated the Welsh Youth Team
yesterday with a score of 3:0. The Turkish team now moves up towards
the finals of the European Championship. /Hurriyet/
