Top level government officials gathered for a foreign policy summit at the presidential palace yesterday. In a two-and-a-half hour meeting President Demirel discussed recent foreign policy developments with Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, Deputy Prime Ministers Bulent Ecevit and Ismet Sezgin, State Ministers Sukru Sina Gurel, Ahad Andican, Isin Celebi, Refaiddin Sahin, Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and a number of other officials.

    [03] EXPORT BOOM

Exports for July increased by 17 percent in comparison to the same month of the previous year, the Turkish Exporters' Assembly announced yesterday. [04] IMKM PRESIDENT HOSPITALIZED

[05] IMF PRAISES THE NEW GOVERNMENT

International Monetary Fund (IMF) members have declared that they welcome the ANASOL-D coalition government's economic projects. The IMF officials reported that the Turkish economy realised an average 8 percent growth in the 1995-1996 period. They added that there would be an estimated 5.5 percent growth rate in the economy in 1997 and that the export rate would highly increase.

The IMF Executive Board noted that growth in Turkish economy was based on strong trends and that foreign exchange reserves were at sufficient levels. It was stressed that Turkey's economic potential would be maintained by a stable macro-economic environment. It was further pointed out that foreign investment would have to be encouraged to speed up the privatization process and that legal changes in line with those needs should be realised as soon as possible. /Cumhuriyet/

[06] FM CEM OFF TO LEFKOSA

Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem will go to Lefkosa in order to exchange views with President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus before the second round of talks between Rauf Denktas and Glafkos Clerides, leader of the Greek Cypriot community on 11 August.

At a foreign policy meeting held yesterday at the presidency, the Cyprus issue was discussed in detail. FM sources reported that Cem would also convey the results of the meeting and a message from President Suleyman Demirel to Denktas. /Milliyet/
