TURKISH PRESS REVIEWMONDAY, JULY 14, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning. [01] PARLIAMENT GIVES YILMAZ THE GO AHEADThe minority government led by Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz won a resounding victory in Parliament when it received a vote of confidence with a comfortable majority of 281 against 256.As a first step, the Mother-Left government visited Ataturk's Mausoleum on Sunday. The government later convened in Parliament to determine the bills which are to be voted on in early August./Sabah/Hurriyet_ [02] FIRST ROUND OF CYPRUS TALKS OVERFour days of talks between the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities ended on Saturday and a second round was tentatively fixed to be held between August 11 and 16 in Switzerland, the exact dates subject to confirmation by the two sides.A U.N. source close to the talks describes the U.N.-sponsored meetings between Turkish Cypriot leader Glafkos Clerides as "very positive and very constructive". It is said that Ambassador Diego Cordobez, who led the meetings in Troutbeck, New York, came up with an amended process version on Saturday incorporating some of the two sides' observations. The U.N. sources close to the negotiations said: "The whole point of these talks was to get a process going. It is quite obvious now that this process is established."/Sabah/Cumhuriyet/Hurriyet/ [03] DEMIREL FLIES TO GEORGIAPresident Suleyman Demirel goes to Georgia today at the invitation of his Georgian counterpart, Eduard Shevardnadze. The leaders will have face-to-face discussions in bilateral talks and meetings, to be followed by the signing of agreements between the two nations. The agreements and the visit will be explained to the press in a joint conference held afterwards./Cumhuriyet/[04] EUROPEAN RESEARCH BOARD SAYS TURKEY IN BETTER CONDITION THAN OTHER EU CANDIDATESThe European Relations Center (CRE), a Brussels-based research center, announced Friday that Turkey's economy is in much better condition than those of other European Union candidate countries, the Anatolia news agency reported. The CRE invited EU officials to adopt a more constructive and cautious approach about Turkey, publishing a 200-page report entitled "Turkey in the 10th year of its EU application."The report indicates that if one starts from the perspective of using the same criteria for all candidate countries, then the Turkish economy has a greater performance capacity. [05] GERMAN DEPUTY SPEAKER DEFENDS DUAL CITIZENSHIPGerman deputy speaker of Parliament, Burkhard Hirsch, has defended dual citizenship for children of foreigners in Germany, until the age of 18, the Anatolia news agency reported. Speaking at a press conference in Bonn, Hirsch provided information about his visit to Turkey on 2-6 July. He said that he had discussed the situation in the southeast, human rights, new elctions and voting procedures for Turks in Germany during his talks in Ankara.[06] TURKEY-IMF NEGOTIATIONS STARTEDIt has been revealed that talks between Turkey and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) began immediately following the Staurdy Parliamentary vote of confidence during which the new coalition government won a comfortable majority.Chairman of the IMF, Michael Camdessus exchanged views on economic measures to be taken in The Turkish economy with State Minister responsible for the econonomy, Gunes Taner. Taner said that Camdessus welcomed the framework of the economic measures that would be taken. Taner added that they would have the chance to hold bilateral talks with IMF officials during the annual meetings between the IMF and the World Bank in September in Hong Kong./Hurriyet/ [07] MORE TAN ONE MILLION TOURISTS COME TO TURKEYMore than one million tourists came to Turkey in June, and 3,877,00 tourists visited Turkey during the first six months of 1997, Tourism Ministry was reported on Friday. Tourism Ministry said that this year in June there is an increase of 16 percent in the number of tourists (1,045,980) coming to Turkey when it is compared to June, 1996. German tourists, who constituted 20.8 percent of tourists in Turkey, took the lead by 218,000 visitors, with an increase of 8,20 percent compared to last year's June. A total of 155,802 British tourists came to Turkey in the same month with an increase of 48,61 percent. In the same period, 137,000 tourists from Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), 48,207 American tourists and 40,370 Austrian tourists visited Turkey./All papers/[08] FOREIGN PRESSIn some Western countries, there are positive reactions regarding the Motherleft-D coalition government winning the weekend vote of confidence. Italy: Corriere Della Sera newspaper said: "Turkey has been rescued from a dreadful situation". France: Secularists received the vote of confidence. German, British and Russian television stations also gave coverage to the vote of confidence. /Hurriyet/[09] CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE FROM TRNC TO YILMAZActing President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Speaker of the Republican Assembly Hakki Atun sent a congratulatory message to Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz on the occasion of the vote of confidence won by the 55th government. TRNC Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu also sent a congratulatory message to the new Turkish government. /Cumhuriyet/[10] MING: TURKEY IS MY SECOND HOMEA farewell ceremony was held over the weekend for Chinese Ambassador in Ankara Wu Ke Ming, who has been working in Turkey for 10 years. Ming said: "Turkey is my second home. Wherever I go, I will exert every effort for the development of Turkish-Chinese friendship and cooperation and especially economic and commercial relations". Guest of honour at a banquet given by Turkish-Chinese Business Council Chairman Asaf Guneri, Ming said: "I will never forget Turkey". Ming described the Turkish nation as hard-working, brave and hospitable. /Hurriyet/[11] MORE ARSON IN GERMANYIt is reported that a fire in the Kassel district of Germany two days ago, which led to the injury of nine people, could be an arson. The Federal Criminal Department is investigating the incident. /Hurriyet/[12] MINE SUBSIDENCESubsidence in a chrome mine in the town of Uzumlu in the Fethiye district of Mugla caused the death of one person and sent another to the Fethiye Hospital. /Cumhuriyet/[13] PRESIDENT DEMIREL URGES SUPPORT FOR NEW GOVERNMENTPresident Demirel said yesterday that the 55th government that won a parliamentary vote of confidence on Saturday was a product of the democratic process operating in Turkey and urged everybody to cooperate with the new government. Demirel pointed out that the coalition set up by ANAP, DTP and DSP parties will have to deal primarily with problems like terrorism, development and public finance./Sabah/[14] SIX PKK CAMPS IN CYPRUSTurkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas has urged Greek Cypriot leader Glafkos Klerides to undertake measures for the closing down of PKK camps set up in Southern Cyprus. The issue was discussed at the summit meeting of the two leaders in New York. There are six known PKK camps in southern Cyprus. /Milliyet/[15] SYRIA SUPPORTS TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS IN TURKEYIn the aftermath of a recent wide-scale operation initiated by the Turkish security forces against the terrorist PKK organization, Syrian officials are now meeting with representatives of various Palestinian terrorist organizations in a move to undermine security in Turkey. Syrian officials want to have Palestinian terrorists organize bloody attacks in Turkey. /Sabah/[16] FOUR GOLD MEDALS IN ATHLETICSTurkish athletes won four gold medals at the Balkan Athletics Championship that ended yesterday. In addition to the gold medals, Turkish athletes also won seven silver and seven bronze medals, and broke two Turkish national records. /Sabah/[17] CONCERT IN SUPPORT OF TURCO-GREEK FRIENDSHIPAt a concert held yesterday in Bergama, Izmir, Turkish and Greek artists voiced support for Turco-Greek friendship. Governors and mayors of various Turkish and Greek coastal cities were also present at the concert.
