[01] DEMIREL IN TURKMENISTANPresident Demirel arrived yesterday in the Turkmenistan capital of Ashkabad that will host an extraordinary Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit. In a statement at Ankara Esenboga Airport prior to his departure, Demirl said that he was visiting Turkmenistan on the official invitation of Turkmen President Saparmurat Turkmenbasi, and added that at the summit issues related to improving cooperation in transportation, communications and pipeline construction would be taken in hand.Demirel was welcomed by his Turkmen counterpart upon his arrival at the airport in Ashkabad. Yesterday he participated in various opening ceremonies of facilities constructed by Turkish entrepreneurs, and was presented with the International Mahtumkulu Award and with the highest award of the Turkmenistan Academy of Science. /Sabah/ [02] PALESTINIAN ENVOY TO VISIT ANKARAPalestine's leading spokeswoman and Minister of Education, Hannan Ashrawi, will pay a two-day visit to Turkey May 24-25 at the invitation of her Turkish counterpart Mehmet Saglam. Apart from cooperation in the field of education, it is expected that relations between Turkey and Israel will be high on the agenda./All papers/[03] TAYAN URGES TURKEY'S FULL MEMBERSHIP IN WEUTurkish Defense Minister Turhan Tayan said on Monday that Turkey's aim was to become a full member of the Western European Union (WEU). Before his departure for Paris to participate in WEU Council of Ministers meeting, Tayan told journalists at Ankara's Esenboga Airport that during the meeting in Paris they would push for Turkey's full membership in the WEU. Turkey is currently an associate member of the organization. Tayan pointed out that the WEU's military arm had recently decided to treat Turkish forces as full members during operations carried out under NATO's umbrella, and said he hoped that this development would be a step towards full membership for Turkey./Sabah/[04] AKSENER CALLS FOR STRONGER TIES WITH BULGARIAInterior Minister Meral Aksener received her Bulgarian counterpart, Bogomil Bonev, in Ankara on Monday and told him that Turkey wanted to develop ties with Bulgaria regarding both regional and international issues, especially in the struggle against international terrorism, drug smuggling and organized crime.Aksener told reporters that the two ministers would work to set up an exchange of information concerning the issues mentioned above, and also discuss police training and the status of people of Turkish origin living in Bulgaria. Bonev pointed out that the two countries had signed a cooperation agreement in 1992. /Cumhuriyet/ [05] TURKEY TO SEND AID TO IRANTurkey's Red Crescent Society said on Monday it would send two plane loads of emergency aid to help earthquake victims in neighbouring Iran. A society official said that the relief aid included 13 tons of food, 4,000 blankets and medical supplies. Turkish officials are coordinating their efforts with their Iranian counterparts over the distribution of the aid, he said./Milliyet/[06] ANOTHER CYPRUS "SUMMIT"President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Rauf Denktas, has invited the leader of the Greek Cypriot community, Glafkos Clerides to a concert May 19.The "friendship concert" will star Turkish singer Burak Kut and Greek pop singer Sakis Ruvas at a venue right on the "Green Line" border between the two communities on the island. Denktas said yesterday that he hoped the Greek community leader would accompany him to the concert. If they do go to the concert together, it will be the first time in three years that they will meet apart from official meetings. /Hurriyet/ [07] IRAQ RELEASES 16 TURKSThe Iraqi Ministry of Justice has released sixteen Turks as a gesture towards Turkey. Iraqi Minister for Justice, Sebib Lazim Al Maliki, visiting Ankara as the guest of his Turkish counterpart, Sevket Kazan, said yesterday that Iraqi leader Saddam Huseyin had personally called for their release and return to Turkey.As Justice Minister Kazan thanked Al Maliki, the Iranian minister replied that he hoped relations between Turkey and Iraq would develop in every area, not just in legal matters. /Sabah/ [08] COMCEC MEETING OVERThe 13th Ankara meeting of COMCEC or the Islamic Conference Organization ended yesterday. The COMCEC committee will meet again in Istanbul on November 1-4.The meeting ended with a report on the COMCEC financial situation, new investments and projects. Participants agree that COMCEC must become more influential in the Islamic financial world. /Hurriyet/ [09] PEACE EXERCISESCountries in the Partnership For Peace (PFP) agreement will hold exercises in Sofia on 16-22 May. According to a written Office of the Land Forces statement, the "Peaceful Eagle 97" exercise will be carried out with the participation of Turkey, the US, Bulgaria, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania and Greece. /Cumhuriyet/[10] D-8 CIVIL SERVANTS MEETINGA D-8 high-level civil servants meeting began in Izmir yesterday. During the meeting attended by representatives from Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Egypt, preliminary work was begun for a meeting to be held in Istanbul on 15 June for the heads of state of the D-8 developing Moslem countries. State Minister Abdullah Gul said: "The D-8 means to cooperate with giant firms of the world. This will yield positive results for Turkey". /Cumhuriyet/[11] HANLAROVA ON TOUR IN TURKEYAzerbaijan Baku Opera Singer Zeynep Hanlarova will go on tour in Turkey between 25 May and 11 June. Hanlarova will give concerts in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Denizli, Antalya, Adana, Kayseri and Kars as part of a new "Call for Friendship" tour. /Hurriyet/[12] CROSS BORDER OPERATION AGAINST PKKThe Turkish Armed Forces have initiated a large-scale operation against the PKK terrorist organization. Turkish F-16 fighter planes are bombing PKK camps in Northern Iraq. Turkish land forces have also penetrated into Iraqi territory.During operations carried out in Southeastern Anatolia, 28 militants of the PKK terrorist organization have been killed. A statement made by the Governorship of the Emergency Rule Region said that during the operations, 19 militants were killed in Kaynarpinar Village in the Karliova District of Bingol, five on the Gurvil mountain near Sirnak and four in the rural areas of the Nazimiye District of Tunceli. /Cumhuriyet/Sabah_ [13] SOYLEMEZ: ECONOMIC POLICY ON TRACKThe three-month maturity term for bonds paying 150 percent are over according to the state minister responsible for finance, Ufuk Soylemez. Speaking on the sidelines of the "15th World Leasing Convention" in Istanbul on Monday, Soylemez told the Anatolia news agency that consumer price-indexed bonds, with a maturity date of two years were the new way for Turkey. The minister also explained the latest bond issue, saying Treasury bonds with a five-year maturity date and worth $ 250 million were launched in London on Monday.[14] TURKISH INVESTORS CONQUER THE WORLDThe Export Development Center (IGEME) reports that the number of Turkish entrepreneurs investing abroad was on the increase. According to IGEME statistics, the number of Turkish companies operating abroad has increased from 185 in 1992 to 500 currently.
