morning.
[01] EPP POSITION ON TURKEY'S EU BID GENERATES STRONG REACTION
Turkish officials and politicians were 'dumbstruck' on Wednesday by
the decision of senior European politicians, mainly Christian Democrat
European People's Party (EPP) members , to send a blunt message to
Ankara, saying "Turkey is not a candidate to become a member of the
European Union (EU), in either the short or long term."
Turkey reacted by calling EU ambassadors to the Foreign Ministry to
formally lodge a complaint and express deep disappointment over the
stance of the European leaders. Meeting the ambassadors in the
afternoon, Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen asked
them about the stance now being taken against Turkey in Europe and
indicated this was not in keeping with the agreements Ankara has with
the EU. Oymen told reporters after the half-hour meeting that he had
asked the ambassadors, one by one, if the EPP statemetn was the
official view of their respective governments. "Not one of them said
this was the official view of their government," Oymen said./Sabah,

[02] D-8 OFFICIALS WILL MEET IN ANTALYA TO PLAN SUMMIT
High-ranking officials of the D-8 nations, Iran, Egypt, Pakistan,
Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Turkey, are scheduled to
meet on March 13-14 in Antalya to discuss preparations for a proposed
summit of the group's leaders, Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman
Sermet Atacanli said on Wednesday._
[03] WORLD'S GIANT DEFENSE FIRMS TO MEET FOR IDEF TURKEY'97 IN SEPTEMBER
The Turkish Armed Forces Foundation is to host the third International
Defense Fair (IDEF Turkey'97) between September 23-26 at the Turkish
Air League, Etimesgut, Ankara.
Speaking at a press conference in Ankara on Wednesday, Turkish Armed
Forces Foundation General Manager Lt. Gen. Gurhan Paker said IDEF
Turkey'97 will be the region's major fair in this field and will bring
together a large number of visitors to view the exhibits and talk
business. The fair is to be organized by CNR International Fairs,
Inc. Paker also pointed out that the Turkish government supports the
fair, ading that ministry of defense patronage and General Staff's
commitment to the show were major sources of confidence and success.

[04] RUSSIA SEEKS TO RETAIN TROJAN TREASURE
The upper house of the Russian Parliament - the Federation Council -
has passed a draft bill that calls for the retention of the historical
Trojan treasures in Russia. The draft declares that cultural
treasures, including the Trojan artifacts that were smuggled out of
Germany during the Second World War, to be Russian property. Turkey
is demanding the return of the priceless artifacts, claiming they
should be brought back to their place of origin. Turkish Foreign
Minister Tansu Ciller included the matter in a mutual protocol signed
during her official visit to Russia. An exhibition of the precious
treasure at the Pushkin Museum and drew protests from Turkey.
Turkey has suffered greatly from the smuggling of its historic
heritage piece-by-piece to foreign lands./Cumhuriyet/
[05] 7,500 GUNS SEIZED IN THE THE SOUTHEAST
During the last five years, 7,500 guns have been seized in operations
in southeastern Anatolia. An important part of these weapons were
Kalashnikov rifles. According to officials from the Security
Directorate, most of the guns were smuggled into the region from
northern Iraq. /Sabah/
[06] UN DRUG REPORT
According to assessments of the UN Narcotics Council, Turkey is an
important transit country for drug trafficking to Europe.
Accordingly, UN officials have welcomed the preparation of a draft law
that will block money laundering in Turkey. In a report prepared by
the UN Narcotics Council, Turkish officials were praised for their
success in the struggle against drug smuggling. /Hurriyet/
[07] STRATEGIC COOPERATION WITH KAZAKHSTAN
Kazakh Prime Minister Akejan Kajigeldin who is paying an official
visit to Turkey, was yesterday received by President Demirel. During
the meeting, Kajigeldin noted that Turkey and Kazakhstan were
cooperating in a number of issues, adding that the next five years
were vital with respect to Turkish investments in Kazakhstan.
President Demirel said that bilateral relations between the two
countries will continue to improve to the mutual benefit of Turkey and
Kazakhstan. /Hurriyet/
[08] BUSINESSMEN AND SCIENTISTS MEET IN ISTANBUL
At a two-day meeting in Istanbul, the Turkish Foundation for Economic
and Social Studies will release the results of a report on world moral
values. The report reveals interesting observations about
transformations in norms and values in Turkish society since 1990 and
compares developments in Turkey to related developments in other

[09] TURKS WILL SELL FOOD TO IRAQ
The UN Executive Committee has approved agreements made by two Turkish
companies with Iraq for the sale of food within the framework of UN
Security Council Decree 986. Sales by the two Turkish companies will
total $15 million. /Milliyet/
[10] THY FLIGHTS TO ODESSA AND ERCAN
The new Turkish Airlines (THY) flight schedule includes flights from
Istanbul to Odessa and Ercan. Flights to the two new destinations
