TURKISH PRESS REVIEWFRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1996Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning. [01] TURKEY TO TEMPORARILY SETTLE 2,000 N.IRAQI REFUGEESAround 2,000 refugess from northern Iraq will be allowed to settle temporarily in Turkey based upon an agreement between the U.S. and Turkish governments, the Anatolia news agency reported.According to sources in Washington the Kurdish Turkmen and Iraqi dissidents will settle for a period of three months in Silopi and then be granted political asylum in the United States. The refugees' identities will be carefully scrutinized by Turkish and American officials upon their arrival and those who are found to be linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' party (PKK) or deemed "suspicious" shall be handed over to Turkish authorities. The refugees will be subject to Turkish law during their period of stay in the temporary camp near Silopi. The refugees had been working for the U.S. government in northern Iraq and the Americans fear they might be killed by Iraqi soldiers of the Kurdisyan Democratis Party (KDP) if they were to remain in the region. [02] SIX SOLDIERS, 18 TERRORISTS KILLED IN SOUTHEAST CLASHSecurity forces killed 13 rebels from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) late Wednesday in a clash which broke out when terrorists attacked a military post, and six members of the security forces lost their lives in the line of duty near the town Ozalp in the southeastern province of Van, very close to the Iranian border. According to the office of the emergency rule region, several terrorists later escaped across the border into Iranian territory.In another operation to remove PKK militants from the region, one terrorist was killed in Kozluk near Batman, one in Bingol, one near Cukurca in Hakkari and two in the rural areas of Bitlis. Meanwhile, during security operations in the town of Kurtalan in Siirt, six members of the PKK were captured with their ammuniation and guns. The terrorists were arrested after questioning./All Papers/ [03] GERMAN OFFICIAL VISITS TO DISCUSS TURKISH WORKERSThe German government official responsible for foreigners living in Germany, Cornelia Schmalz-Jacobsen, will visit Ankara September 16-18. Schmalz-Jacobsen will meet Labor and Social Security Minister Necati Celik.The negotiataions will be mainly concerned with the working conditions of Turkish citizens who live in Germany. Schmalz-Jacobsen is scheduled to give a press conference on September 18 to discuss the results of her negotiations at the Sheraton Hotel in Ankara./All Papers/ [04] MESSAGE TO JORDAN FROM TURKEYTurkish Ambassador to Jordan, Suha Umar extended a message from the Turkish governmet to Prime Minister Abdulkerim Kabariti. The message recalled that Turkey was respectful of the territorial integrity of Iraq and said that the measures taken concerning the borders were just for security reasons. It was stressed that Ankara is trying to prevent separatist terrorists from crossing into Turkish territories through Turco-Iraqi the border./Sabah/[05] ATTACKS TO TURKS' ELECTION OFFICES IN WESTERN THRACEElection offices of the Turkish candidades in Western Thrace who will participate in the general elections to be held on 22 September were attacked. The election offices of Ihsan Kahya and Birol Akif, candidades in Xanthi from PASOK and New Democracy Party, were attacked by far-right extremitist Greek fanatics./Sabah/Cumhuriyet_[06] AVIATION AND SPACE FAIR IN ANKARAThe 1st INternational Aviation and Space Fair will be opened by President Suleyman Demirel on 18 September in the Etimesgut Turkkusu Establishment, Ankara. The fair will be organised under the auspices of Defense Minister Turhan Tayan. Ten foreign and 33 domestic firms will participate in the fair./Cumhuriyet/[07] TURKEY PRODUCES FIRST LORRYPrivate BMC Industry and Trade Corp. produced the first Turkish maDe lorry. General-Directorate of the Corp. Mehmet Demirpence said that the project had been conducted for six years and had cost $ 120 million.
