Moscow wants early oil to be transported from Baku via the Black Sea Novorosysk port to foreign markets. Ankara prefers cooperation with Russia instead of competition and will try to involve the Russians in the Georgian project. It is reported that Adviser to the Turkish Prime Ministry, Emre Gonensay, who is making contacts in the US, is expected to go to Baku, Tbilisi and Moscow in the coming days. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tansu Ciller will go to Tbilisi next week, it is stated. Ciller will go to Tbilisi on 31 August as the guest of Georgian Head of State Eduard Shervardnadze. The last decision for the route of the early oil is expected to be made on 9 October. /Milliyet-Cumhuriyet/[02] TURKISH INTELLECTUALS PROTEST AGAINST UN IN BOSNIAAn 75-member Turkish delegation in Bosnia-Herzegovina protested against the United Nations (UN) in the Igman Mountain region yesterday. Visiting Travnik, an old Ottoman city, delegation members had contacts with local Muslim people and listened their problems. The delegation then moved on to Zenica. The delegation delivers food and medical aid to every city they visit. /Hurriyet/[03] BAKU-CEYHAN OIL PIPELINE: CHEAPEST ROUTE FOR AZERI OILThe Oil Pipeline Administration (BOTAS) recently prepared a report about the cost of transporting Azeri oil. According to the report there will be both financial and other benefits if the Azeri oil is transported through Turkey. It will decrease sea transportation costs to half if the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline is used. It will cost $3.5 million yearly to use the Ceyhan facility in Turkey whereas it will double the cost if other alternative routes for the Azeri oil are finally agreed upon. /Milliyet/[04] US PLAN FOR CYPRUSPresident Clinton's special advisor, George Stephanopoulos has left Ankara and journeyed on to Cyprus. There he will have talks with the leaders of the two communities on the island and then prepare a report for President Clinton.According to Stephanopoulos, the US would like to see a federation of two regions and two societies. So far however, the special advisor has not introduced the plan officially. For now he merely wants to talk to leaders on the island and get the feel of how things are going. The first US move will be to get the Turkish and Greek community leaders to talk, and then it will propose its own target scheme. Government officials in Ankara commenting on the visit of Stephanopoulos noted yesterday that Prime Minister was both optimistic and determined to find a solution to the problems on Cyprus. /Cumhuriyet/
[05] ECONOMIC INTEGRATION WITH NORTHERN CYPRUSTurkey is making preparations for widening the scope of its agreement for coastal trade with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which in fact will be an infringement of the embargo imposed by the European Union (EU) against the TRNC. The agreement, regulating the export of certain Northern Cyprus made goods to Turkey, will be expanded so that all goods produced in the TRNC can be sold in Turkey. The new provisions will also allow for exporting Northern Cyprus made goods to the Turkish-speaking republics, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Israel. A 140-member delegation has gone to Northern Cyprus within this framework to seek opportunities for trade and joint investment. /Hurriyet/
[06] SAUDI ARABIAN CRISISThe Foreign Ministry has urgently prepared a plan of action to overcome the crisis over the executions of Turkish citizens in Saudi Arabia. First of all, Turkish Ambassador to Riyadh Turkekul Kurttekin, previously recalled, will return today to Saudi Arabia. Turkish trucks carrying goods to Saudi Arabia will be carefully examined at the border gates. Steps will be undertaken for bringing an end to the campaign undertaken by the Turkish press against Saudi Arabia. Legal ways of saving the Turkish citizens condemned to execution are being examined and steps will be undertaken for signing a bilateral agreement to regulate related issues. Contacts for improving political relations with Saudi Arabia will be established.On the other hand, a statement by Saudi Arabian Embassy officials in Ankara confirmed that Saudi Arabia will continue to adhere to Islamic laws and regulations. Nevertheless, Foreign Ministry officials stress that the crisis will most likeky be resolved. /Sabah-Hurriyet/
[07] FOREIGN PRESS ADMIRES TURKISH TOURISMThe weekly News Magazine in Austria said in one of its articles that tourists can both go rafting and enjoy jeep safaris in Turkey, and a Swedish company "Bates September AB" recommended Turkey for summer holidays to Swedish tourists, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. Officials from the Tourism Ministry said that such publicity was a big development for Turkish tourism. Both articles were highly favourable and emphasized the variety and value of activities available in Turkey.
[08] INTERNATIONAL SCULPTORS GATHER IN BURSAThe Unversity of Uludag in Bursa is holding an "International Sculptors' Symposium" from August 23 to September 30, the Anatolia news agency reported. The organizers aim to introduce Bursa and the university to artists, historians and critics from various countries. Well-known sculptors from countries including the US, Japan, France, Germany and Turkey will participate in the conference. Works produced by the artists during their stay will be donated to various departments of the university. Yildiz Tuzun and Fusun Onur, well-known Turkish sculptors, will attend. A complimentary symposium on "The Past and Present of Turkish Sculpture" will also be held at the university between September 24 and 26.
[09] RUSSIA AWARDS STATE PRIZE TO TURKISH ARCHITECTYuksel Ozdemir, the Turkish architect responsible for the Moscow Park Palace complex which was constructed by Mir Insaat, has been awarded the 1994 Russian State Architectural Prize by President Boris Yeltsin, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. Ozdemir is also reportedly to receive awards from the Turkish Contractors Union and the International Contractors Union.
[10] AWARD TO ASELSANThe state-owned military and defence contractor, Aselsan has been awarded by the US military electronics establishment "Litton Guidance and Control Systems" for its high-quality production. Aselsan officials said that the award would be regarded as a reference in international projects and increase the reputation of the firm among NATO members. This award for high quality was given to ASELSAN at a ceremony in Baltimore wherein high-ranking officials from the US Defence Department and the Turkish Defence Ministry and the Air Force were present. ASELSAN was given 98 points out of 100 by an international control organization.END |
