TURKISH PRESS REVIEWTHURSDAY AUGUST 3, 1995Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish pressthis morning[01] MINISTER HACALOGLU DEMANDS END TO BOSNIAN HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONSState Minister responsible for Human Rights, Algan Hacaloglu presided over an international meeting in Istanbul on the human rights violations and increased humanitarian relief needs further aggravated by the recent developments in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The conference, held yesterday, aimed at bringing the ongoing tragedy in Bosnia to the attention of western governments and international public opinion. The meeting was attended by Turkish officials, ambassadors and diplomats from Bosnia, France, Britain, Spain, Italy, America, Russia, Belgium, Denmark and Croatia, as well as the Director for Humanitarian Affairs from Germany and Sweden, and representatives from the EU Commission, UNHCR, and governor of Istanbul Hayri Kozakcioglu. Deputy Prime Minister Hikmet Cetin, who opened the meeting, stated that the ethnic cleansing and murder of defenceless civilians in the name of a Greater Serbia had violated international law and brought crimes against humanity unparalleled since World War II. Cetin stressed that NATO must not have its hands tied and should be able to act with timely and consistent responses, especially as chances of the spreading of the war are increasing. Hacaloglu drew attention to the fact that for over three years human rights have been systematically violated despite international conventions, and that there are no signs of stopping them, as they are increasing. Hacaoglu made two proposals. The first to launch an international campaign to reopen and maintain routes for the safe passage of humanitarian convoys, while strengthening UNPROFOR's mandate and using the rapid reaction force deployed in the area. Secondly, he proposed that further indictments be made against those responsible for war crimes and that trials should take place as soon as possible with the cooperation of the international community. /Cumhuriyet/
[02] INONU TO VISIT BELARUSForeign Minister Erdal Inonu will fly to Belarus on August 7 for an official visit aimed, by both countries, at mending relations frozen since last December after Minsk expelled two Turkish diplomats for alleged spying.
[03] TURKEY URGES PROTECTION OF TURKS IN GERMANYTurkey said yesterday it had asked Germany to step up efforts to protect the Turks living in that country and their property. After a week-long series of firebomb attacks against Turkish targets in Germany, Foreign Ministry Acting Undersecretary Gunduz Aktan summoned the German charge d'affaires in Ankara on Tuesday to ask that measures be increased to end the attacks by supporters of the PKK terrorist organization. He also urged Germany to immediately begin deporting those involved in the attacks to Turkey in line with a March accord. "Aktan pointed out that most of those responsible for previous attacks had not been caught, and that this may have been an encouragement for new attacks" Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nurettin Nurkan told journalists in a weekly news briefing. Turkey and Bonn agreed in March that Germany would expel militants, but Nurkan said that to his knowledge none had been deported since then. /Milliyet/
[04] TURKEY WANTS MULTILATERAL END TO BOSNIA EMBARGOTurkey supports the lifting of the Bosnia arms embargo but wants it done multilaterally, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nurettin Nurkan said yesterday. "Turkey has always decried the injustice of the embargo imposed on Bosnia and we strongly favour its lifting" Nurkan told a press conference. "But we think the arms embargo should be lifted, not just with single efforts, but as a joint effort of the international community. Turkey will continue its efforts to achieve this". /All papers/
[05] BLOOD DONATIONS CAMPAIGNA blood donations campaign was started yesterday by the Sariyer branch of the Red Crescent and the Sariyer municipality. The blood will be sent to Bosnia-Herzegovina and to Chechnya. Sariyer Mayor Yusuf Tulun has appealed to everyone throughout Turkey to support the campaign, and the head of the Red Crescent branch has said that the blood will be sent wherever it is needed in the two regions. /All papers/
[06] TURKEY DENIES ALLEGATIONS OF PRESSURE ON FOREIGN MEDIAThe Foreign Ministry yesterday denied a press report that foreign media members working in Turkey were being pressurized by the government not to write anti-Turkish news stories. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nurettin Nurkan told a weekly press briefing that the report was unfounded. "The press is completely free in Turkey" Nurkan said. "Those foreign media members who report objectively and without prejudice are received well in Turkey and enjoy full cooperation and assistance from relevant Turkish authorities" he said. "But it is only natural that we will not behave in the same way and will not cooperate with journalists who are mouthpieces of terrorism and who deliberately release untrue and misleading reports against Turkey" Nurkan said. But he emphasized that measures to be taken by the authorities in such cases would be confined to "no cooperation" and nothing else. "Moves to issue untrue news reports, to act as tools of terrorism and likewise to exploit the freedom of the press are unacceptable" he added. /Hurriyet/
[07] MESSAGE TO THE GREEK PEOPLESpeaking through the Turkish press, Prime Minister Ciller has sent clear messages to the people and leaders of Greece. Despite the recent reports of Greek support for the PKK terrorist organization, Ciller has called upon the Greeks to re-open a dialogue with Turkey, and forget their friendship with the PKK.Saying that "we are ready for new talks", Ciller also said yesterday that there was no need for the Greek people to afraid of Turkey: "We want the Greek people to overcome their fear of us" stressed Ciller. Despite the many issues between Turkey and Greece that need to be resolved, Ciller, speaking through the Athens representative of Hurriyet newspaper, Nur Batur, called upon Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreu to cooperate with Turkey for mutual benefit and for the European Union. /Cumhuriyet/
[08] TIME FOR UNION WITH NORTHERN CYPRUSNoting that the Greek Cypriots are pressing for union with the European community, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Rauf Denktas said yesterday that the time had come for the TRNC to move into complete union with mainland Turkey.Commenting on the lack of progress in talks and efforts to reconcile the two communities on the island, Denktas said that if it was impossible to resolve the issues, then it had to be accepted that it really was impossible. Nevertheless, Denktas laid down the conditions for agreement in the light of recent developments, including agreements on guarantees for federal government with equal rights for both sides. /Cumhuriyet/
[09] INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT BOOMS THIS YEARTurkey's industrial production boomed in the first half of the current year. The State Institute of Statistics (DIE) said that industrial output soared 6.1 % in real terms in the January- June period, compared with a 4.9 % plunge in the corresponding period of last year. The DIE also said that total industrial production in June rose a startling 23 % in real terms over the same month last year. /All papers/
[10] TURKGOZU BORDER GATE OPERATIVE IN SEPTEMBERTravel through the Turkgozu border gate, which has just been opened by President Suleyman Demirel and his Georgian counterpart Eduard Shevardnadze, will begin in September. Mayor of Ardan, Kutluay Oktem, said yesterday that the Turkish side had already finished its preparations for opening the crossing to travellers and transport, but that they were waiting for the Georgian side to complete its own preparations. The Turkgozu border gate now connects Europe to Central Asia. /Hurriyet/
[11] PKK CAMPS IN GERMANYIt is reported that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has ten training camps in Lower Saxony Germany and that youths trained in these camps are being sent to eastern Mediterranean countries. The Department for the Protection of the Constitution in the Province of Lower Saxony is aware of the location of these camps. According to this Department, the PKK is the most dangerous terrorist organization in Germany. Daniel Cohn Bendit, a member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Frankfurt Multicultural Department, also said that he was against the PKK and added: "We have to protect the twelve thousand Kurdish civilians living in Germany from the violance of the PKK." /Hurriyet/
[12] PKK COLLAPSINGInan Aslan Durgun, 21, son of the top level PKK terrorist responsible for the Tunceli region Muslum Durgun, who was killed last year by the PKK terrorist organization, has surrendered himself to the local Turkish security forces. Under questioning, Inan Aslan Durgun said that he had started working for the PKK oganization two years ago, but after the murder of his father, he had many times tried unsuccessfully to escape. "Many PKK members also want to leave the organization. The PKK is collapsing. All of its members are suspicious of each other," Durgun noted. /Milliyet/
[13] PEACE MEETING IN NORTHERN IRAQDue to the fact that Ankara has voiced concern over a meeting of northern Iraqi Kurds organized by the US, Washington officials have reassured the Turkish government that the aim was to establish peace in the region, not to hold a new Paris Conference. Upon the request of Ankara for information about the subject of the meeting, US representatives stressed that at the meeting, peace in northern Iraq would be discussed, and that no room would be given to threats against the territorial integrity of Iraq. /Hurriyet/
[14] PRAISE FOR TURKEYThe Wall Street Journal of Europe newspaper, published in the UK, has praised the improvements in the Turkish economy. "One year after the financial crisis, Turkish banks have started to make successful agreements in the international credit market," the newspaper noted, and pointed out that recently Turkish banks have been involved in large international syndicated credits. /Sabah/
[15] LOCAL ELECTIONS TO BE HELD IN TOWNSHIPS OF NEW PROVINCESLocal elections will be held on August 6 in the provinces of Kilis and Yalova, former townships which were made into provinces following the July 4 local elections, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday. Over 52,000 voters will cast ballots in the elections.
[16] YOU CAN VISIT ANY COUNTRY -SO LONG AS IT'S TURKEYThe Bates September AB Company, which, together with the Tourism Ministry, runs Turkey's promotional campaign in Sweden, has called on its employees either "to holiday in Turkey or to holiday in Turkey", the Tourism Ministry reported. An article in the Bates September house magazine listed acitivies available in Turkey -either snow or waterskiing, swimming, visiting historical regions, resting or enjoying the night life, participating in adventure tours- and of course, the best choice of all: doing all of the above. The article ended with the motto of "Either Turkey or Turkey", after reminding the readers once more that Turkey is very different from what everyone believes and money paid for a holiday in Turkey will be well spent. The News Magazine, published in Austria, also praised Turkey. The magazine stated that Turkey offers Jeep safaris, mountain biking and rafting in the Toros mountains, beautiful sea, the sun, modern hotels and holiday villages. The article concluded by saying that there is "another Turkey" waiting for visitors and that in Turkey you can ski in the morning and swim in the sea in the afternoon. /Hurriyet/
[17] 1995: GOLDEN YEAR FOR TOURISMFermani Uygun, chairman of the Tourism Ministry promotions office, said that since reservations were 100 % and tourism income greatly increased, the year 1995 must be considered a "golden year", the Anatolia news agency reported. He further noted that the total number of tourists visiting Turkey had increased by about 21 % over June 1994 and by about 10 % compared to the first half of 1994. Uygun added that the total foreign currency earnings by the end of this year could be TL 5 billion if reservations were not cancelled.END |
