    HURRIYET (LIBERAL)

    NEW U.S. STATE SECRETARY SAYS RELATIONS WITH TURKEY WILL BE VERY GOOD
    Colin Powell, the new State Secretary of the U.S. sent a message to Turkey through Hurriyet newspaper. The relations with Turkey will be very good in the new period, he said. Powell, who was the Chief of General Staff during the Gulf Crisis, knows the strategic importance of Turkey very well. Powell is also a friend of the former president Suleyman Demirel.

    RECORD IN TOURISM
    A record was broken in the number of tourists who came to Turkey last year. For the first time this figure exceeded 10 million persons and it reached 10,412. Tourism Minister Erkan Mumcu said that this figure showed the dynamism and energic structure of the Turkish tourism. Mumcu said that there has been an increase of 40 percent in the number of tourists who visited Turkey last year.

    MILLIYET (LIBERAL)

    HERE IS THE BUREAUCRAT WHO STARTED ENERGY OPERATION
    It was claimed that Zeki Koseoglu, a former general director of Turkish Electricity Production and Transmission Corp.(TEAS), is the bureaucrat who started the energy operation that created many discussions in Turkey recently. Koseoglu was dismissed from his post as he was delayed in sending three million U.S. dollars to a politician and went to court to regain his rights in his post. Koseoglu who didn't take over his duty after winning in the court started to monitor the developments in TEAS. It was claimed that Koseoglu informed the gendarme forces as he didn't have full trust to the police.

    SECOND TURK IN ITALY
    After the successes of Fatih Terim, former coach of Galatasaray soccer club, in Italy another Turk is getting prepared to become an important figure in Italy. Ferzan Ozpetek, a Turkish film director, will participate in a movie festival in Berlin, on behalf of Italy.

    SABAH (LIBERAL)

    WHEN PANICKED THEY WERE CAPTURED
    Energy bureaucrats who were informed about the operation titled ''White Energy'' that was staged to find those persons who were involved in illegal acts within the Energy Ministry particularly in tenders, called each other on the phone in panic. They told each other that they should give the same testimony before the prosecutor. Officials who got permission from the court listened to and recorded these telephone calls. These talks were put in the case file as an evidence to arrest the bureaucrats.

    ATTACK ON POLICE CAR: ONE POLICEMAN DIES
    Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police car in Sirinevler neighbourhood of Istanbul killing one officer and injuring another one o yesterday. Three gunmen, wearing masks, opened fire on the vehicle in Sirinevler neighborhood, near Istanbul's airport. Scores of police were deployed in the area to find the gunmen. One of the police officers died in hospital and the other one was injured in his arm.

    NECATI CUMALI DIES
    An outstanding Turkish author Necati Cumali died at 80. Necati Cumali who was known for his poems, novels, stories, and drama plays, died because of liver cancer. The main themes of his works are, the daily worries, sorrows, happiness, and loneliness of ordinary people. Some of his stories and novels were projected as movie.

    TALABANI ASKS FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM TURKEY
    Jalal Talabani, the leader of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan(PUK), asked for financial support from Turkey in his recent visit to Ankara. Talabani who said they weren't in need of military support, requested health personnel support. Turkey thinks PUK seems more convincing in struggle against illegal PKK organization lately, and that it will consider the requests of Talabani.

    RADIKAL (LEFT)

    ALI GUNGOR DISMISSED FROM MHP
    Ali Gungor, a deputy of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) was dismissed from his party yesterday. A disciplinary investigation was launched against Gungor due to his speech during a debate at the parliamentary general assembly on the law on conditional release from prison and suspension of punishments. The MHP disciplinary board decided to dismiss Gungor in accordance with the party's regulations. Gungor had accused Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit with forgiving the traitors in a speech he delivered at the parliament.

    SYMPOSIUM ON EU IN MILITARY ACADEMY
    The developments that are expected to take place about Turkey in its relations with the European Union (EU) and the issue of European Security and Defense Identity (ESDI) will be taken up in a symposium that will be organized in the Military Academy today. The symposium, which will last for two days, will bring together for the first time different sections of the society together to discuss the EU.

    TURKIYE (RIGHT)

    ECEVIT SAYS THERE IS NO NEED TO WORRY
    Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that some officials overshadowed democracy in Turkey, adding that ''yet there is no need to worry, as law and democracy in the country are very rooted.'' Ecevit pointed out that ''hopefully there is no organization, no interior minister, no commander of gendarme or no chief of general staff behind the statements telling that 'soldiers started the operation white energy.' There are only secret officials who couldn't digest the principles of state of law, behind the stage.''

    WE CONDEMN FRANCE
    French parliament's foreign affairs commission adopted on Wednesday the resolution on socalled genocide on Armenians yesterday. The resolution will be debated in the French parliament on Jan. 18 and later it will be voted. The parliament and the foreign ministry launch efforts to prevent the adoption of the resolution in France. France ignores its colonialist past and tries to accuse another country with baseless claims. However, the resolution is expected to be adopted.

    ZAMAN (CONSERVATIVE)

    SEZER UNEASY ABOUT MONOPOLISTIC STRUCTURE OF TURKISH PRESS
    President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said legal arrangements should be made for a pluralist media in Turkey, adding that a monopolistic media wouldn't contribute to the democracy of countries. Sezer noted the Turkish media had important problems which had to be solved urgently, adding that the social economic situation of the journalists should be improved if the Turkish media was aiming at reaching universal standards.

    -TURKSAT 2A LAUNCHED (2)
    CAYEN-ANKARA - Turkey's new communication satellite Turksat 2A was launched from Kourou Base in French Guiana in South America at 00:09 a.m. Turkish time on Thursday.

    The construction of the satellite started in 1997. 75 percent of its is owned by Turk Telecom while 25 percent belongs to Alcatel Space company. Turksat 2A will be placed on the same coordinate with Turksat 1 C and it will replace Turksat 1C when a failure occurs in this satellite.

    Fixed transmitters of the satellite will provide high power band access to Turkey, Cenral and Eastern Europe, Central and Western Asia, Israel, Jordan and Lebanon. The other two mobile transmitters will cover Middle East, Western Russia, Ukraine, South Africa and Indian Peninsula. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan will also benefit from the satellite.

    The 300 million U.S. dollar satellite will also provide uninterrupted and fast internet access to rural areas. The satellite will be used to give better internet service between Europe and Asia.

    Turksat 2A has 32 channels and the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) will use two of these channels making Turkey the fifth country in NATO which has a military communication satellite.

    In 15 years, Turksat 2A is expected to bring an income of 1.5 billion U.S. dollars. The broadcast of Turksat 2A can be watched using satellite dishes which has a diameter of 50 to 60 centimeters.

    The satellite weighs 3,400 kilograms and it has an electricity power of 9, 000 watts. After Turksat 2A starts giving service, Turkey will broadcast on 66 channels through Turksat 1B, Turksat 1C and Turksat 2A.

    -TRANSPORTATION MINISTER OKSUZ SAYS LAUNCHING OF TURKSAT 2A
    SATELLITE IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR TURKEY AND HER REGION
    CAYEN - Transportation Minister Enis Oksuz said early on Thursday that the launching of the Turksat 2A satellite is very important for Turkey and her region.

    ''We will see the results together,'' said Oksuz after the launching of the satellite from Kourou Base in Guiana in South America at 00:09 a.m. Turkish time on Thursday.

    ''The firm called 'EUROSIASAT' and which is a partner of Turkey and France developed this project in a considerable extent and our satellite was launched today. This satellite will serve an important mission of connecting Europe and Asia, it will change their views about each other, it will be a tool in exchange of cultures, it will serve peace. In this respect, we regard the project as a project of humanity,'' Oksuz said.

    Referring to the problems that took place during the production and launching of the satellite, Oksuz said that ''this satellite kept us very busy, as it is known. The earthquakes of 1999 damaged the country during the production of the satellite. There have been problems both in Alcatel firm and in Turkish Telecom. But these problems were all overcome. Turkey's not postponing this project when one of the disasters of the century, the massive earthquake rocked the country in 1999, is a very important decision.''

    Oksuz said that the satellite will start to move around its orbit after 12 days and then it will be controlled from the station in Golbası, Ankara.

    Turksat 2A, which will provide broadcast on 60 tv channels, 70 radio stations, telephone and internet connection, cost Turkey 300 million U.S. dollars.

    -GAP REGION EXPORTS CEREALS AND GRAIN-CEREALS WORTH OF 85.3
    MILLION U.S. DOLLARS
    GAZIANTEP - The Southeast Anatolia Region(GAP) exported cereals and grain- cereals worth of 85 million 340 thousand U.S. dollars in 2000 with a decrease of 6.8 percent when compared with the figures of previous year. Cereals and grain-cereals worth of 91 million 478 thousand U.S. dollars were imported from the region in 1999.

    According to the data of Southeast Anatolia Exporters Association, lentils, beans and chick-peas worth of five million 615 thousand U.S. dollars, flour worth of eleven million 710 thousand U.S. dollars, margarine and vegetable oil worth of eight million 811 thousand U.S. dollars were exported from the region last year.

    The region also exported sugar, biscuits, chocolate, and confectionery worth of 48 million 172 thousand U.S. dollars and pounded wheat, pasta, semolina worth of 11 million 32 thousand U.S. dollars in 2000.

    The cereals and grain cereals were mainly exported to Iraq, Germany, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Romania.

    -TUSIAD CHAIRMAN YUCAOGLU SAYS FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION SHOULD CONTINUE
    ISTANBUL - Erkut Yucaoglu, the chairman of the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen (TUSIAD) said on Thursday that they want the government to fight with corruption in all sectors if there is any, not only in the energy sector.

    Noting that economy is not the issue of the National Security Council (NSC), Yucaoglu said that they support the economic programme of the government in spite of the crisis.

    Erkut Yucaoglu who will end his term in office as the chairman of TUSIAD on January 19, responded to questions of A.A correspondent.

    Yucaoglu pointed out that ''the economy issue is not that of the NSC, but it is the issue of the government, economy bureaucrats and the private sector.

    Stressing that the government should fight with corruption at all levels, Yucaoglu said that the inflation rate which has been the lowest of the last 14 years is pleasing. The inflation will further decrease if structural reforms are not delayed and if Turkey continues to implement the dis- inflationary programme with resolution, he said.

    Yucaoglu pointed out that the coalition government works well and in harmony when compared to the governments in the last ten years, adding that Turkey should continue undertaking efforts to reach the criteria of EU.

    -MILITARY ACADEMIES COMMANDER GEN. SENOGUL SAYS
    TOMORROW'S SECURITY ATMOSPHERE DEPENDS ON COUNTRIES'
    REALIZATION OF THEIR DEMOCRATIC AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
    ISTANBUL - General Nahit Senogul, the commander of military academies said on Thursday that tomorrow's security atmosphere depends on countries' realization of their democratic and economic development.

    Speaking in the symposium held in Military Academies Commandership titled ''European Security and Defense Identity, Future of Relations with European Union and NATO and Their Effects on Turkey,'' General Senogul said that the aim of the symposium is to determine the effects of the developments and risk scenarios that concern Turkey's national security, security policies and strategies.

    ''European security policy has left aside the defense understanding which is based on protection of borders and it focused on strategic security understanding now which is based on protection of interests beyond the borders by preventing the cause of negative developments. One has to expect Europe to continue this policy in short and medium term and be an intervenor in the developments in the Balkans,'' he said.

    Gen. Senogul pointed out that Europe started to focus on crisis management operations rather than the mission of collective defense after the end of nuclear threat on Europe following the end of the cold war.

    -FOREIGN TRADE UNDERSECRETARY TUZMEN SAYS THEY WILL EXCEED
    30 BILLION DOLLARS IN EXPORTS IN COMING PERIOD
    FRANKFURT - Kursad Tuzmen, the foreign trade undersecretary said on Thursday that Turkey will export goods which worth more than 30 billion dollars in the coming period.

    Tuzmen, who came to Heim Textile Fair which has been opened in Frankfurt, said that the amount of export credits that were given this year is two folds of those given last year.

    Reiterating that their support to the fairs will continue, Tuzmen said that they work on the project of Turkish quality and that of opening Turkish tarde centres.

    Tuzmen said he believes that the coming period will be better for exporters, adding that the parity between EURO and U.S. dollar will be a littel bet advantageous for Turkey and the imports will be freer from the pressure of the oil prices.

    Eximbank's Director General Ahmet Kılıcoglu said in his part that they have given export credits of 3,3 billion dollars in 2000.

    -MOSES, THE U.S. PRESIDENT'S SPECIAL ENVOY TO CYPRUS, IN ANKARA
    ANKARA - Alfred Moses, the U.S. President Bill Clinton's Special Envoy to Cyprus, said on Thursday that they believed that proximity talks was the best way to find a comprehensive solution on Cyprus issue.

    Moses, who arrived in Ankara on Wednesday after completing his contacts on the Island and in Athens, met with Turkish officials and staged a news conference in the U.S. Embassy in Ankara.

    Moses, who pays a visit of farewell to the region due to a change in the U.S. administration, recalled that he met with the officials of the two sides, and noted that within this framework, he met with Foreign Minister Ismail Cem on Thursday morning.

    Moses said the scope of his talks was the U.N. led proximity talks aiming to find a solution to Cyprus issue. Moses said they considered the criticisms of Rauf Denktas, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit regarded with the issue, yet noted that they expected the talks to resume.

    Moses said he visited Ankara with some new ideas, yet stressed that he was not intended to force the Turkish side to resume the talks. The U.S. envoy refrained from giving details regarded with the new ideas.

    When asked if he managed to convince the Turkish side to return the proximity talks, Moses said he could not say the Turkish side accepted this, ''nevertheless,'' he added, the Turkish side has a clear commitment for the continuation of the efforts toward the solution.

    Responding to a question if they have an alternative apart from the proximity talks, Moses said they believed that proximity talks was the best way to find a solution in Cyprus issue.

    Recalling that one of the sides was against the continuation of the talks with the current method, Moses gave the message that they were open to new proposals.

    When asked about the EU membership of the Greek Cypriot side, Moses said they wanted a united Cyprus to be a member of the EU, noting that all their efforts were exerted to this end.

    Responding to a question if he would continue his assignment in Bush's term in office, Moses said it was not clear if the new administration would appoint a special representative for Cyprus.

    -DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER BAHCELI:
    -''THEY ARE TRYING TO BESIEGE TURKEY WITH THE ALLEGATIONS OF
    SO-CALLED GENOCIDE ON THE ARMENIANS IN THE RECENT YEARS''
    ISTANBUL - Deputy Prime Minister Devlet Bahceli said on Thursday that some circles are trying to besiege Turkey with the allegations of so-called genocide on the Armenians in recent years.

    Bahceli attended a meeting held in Istanbul to introduce a report on international competition strategies prepared by the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD).

    When a reporter reminded him that the resolution on the so-called genocide on the Armenians will be voted in the French full assembly on January 18, Bahceli said, ''they are trying to besiege Turkey with the allegations of so-called genocide on the Armenians in recent years. But, everybody will see that these efforts will not give any result.''

    -INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN ANTALYA
    ANTALYA - The Second International Football Tournament which is organized by International Football Agency (IFA), will be held in southern Antalya province between January 15-21.

    Ayhan Yildiz, the chairman of IFA Executive Board, said the Eurosport channel would live broadcast the tournament.

    Below listed the soccer clubs that will participate in the tournament and the schedule of the tournament:

    Besiktas (Turkey), Sturm Graz (Austria), CSKA Moscow (Russia), Galatasaray (Turkey), Werder Bremen (Germany), Pogon Szczein (Poland).

    -TRNC PRIME MINISTER EROGLU VISITS STATE MINISTER GUREL
    ANKARA - Dervis Eroglu, the Prime Minister of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), visited on Thursday State Minister Sukru Sina Gurel.

    Gurel said that they hope to gain the results of the efficient initiatives carried out between Turkey and TRNC for some time.

    Emphasizing the importance of Eroglu's visit which was held simultaneously with the Turkey-TRNC Partnership Council meeting, Gurel noted that they will review the resolutions in the council and that this review will ensure economic rapproachment and development with TRNC.

    Eroglu said that the resolutions of the council improve the cooperation between the two countries, adding, ''TRNC is facing intensive days again. Moses is here. We always feel the support of the motherland.''

    Fortification of TRNC's economy will moralize the nation and will give them strength in their righful case, Eroglu noted.

    Emphasizing that TRNC is bound to the motherland and that there cannot be a TRNC without the motherland although some people claim the opposite, Eroglu said that they are aware of this truth.

    Eroglu stated that the government prepared a stability program and that they will solve the problems which will occur in the implementation of the program.

    When asked whether or not the action plan regarding TRNC which was prepared by Turkey will be discussed during this visit, Gurel said, ''no. There is a stability program in Cyprus. The economy is under the influence of a cruel embargo. They are implementing a program to overcome the problem.''

    Gurel added, ''we will extend the necessary support. The action plan is a plan of the Turkish government about what can be done by Turkey, the public institutions and organizations of Turkey to develop the economic and social situation of Cyprus.''

    -IMF TECHNICAL DELEGATION STARTS CONTACTS
    ANKARA - Four-member technical delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) started on Thursday its contacts in the Treasury Undersecretariat.

    The technical delegation is holding contacts prior to its official contacts which will start on Monday.

    Carlo Cottarelli, the IMF's Turkey desk chief, is expected to come to Turkey on Friday.

    This will be the first visit of the IMF delegation in 2001.

    The delegation headed by Cottarelli will stay in Turkey for a week.

    -20TH CONFERENCE OF PARTY LEADERS OF EUROPEAN
    DEMOCRATIC UNION STARTS IN BERLIN
    BERLIN - The 20th conference of Party Leaders of European Democratic Union started in Berlin, Germany, on Thursday.

    Mesut Yilmaz, the deputy prime minister and the leader of the Motherland Party (ANAP); Tourism Minister Erkan Mumcu; Bulent Akarcali, the deputy leader of ANAP; and Cavit Kavak, the former state minister; are representing Turkey in the meeting.

    Yilmaz met with Sali Berisa, the opposition leader in Albania; Aloisz Mock, the former prime minister of Austria and the honorary chairman of European Democratic Union, and Bernhard Vogel, the prime minister of Thuringen state.

    Many European statesmen are attending the meeting.

    [02] BRITISH SPECIAL ENVOY TO CYPRUS MEETS WITH DENKTAS AND CLERIDES

    LEFKOSA - Sir David Hannay, the British Special Envoy to Cyprus, met on Thursday separately with Rauf Denktas, the President of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and Glafcos Clerides, the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration.

    Following his meeting with Clerides, Hannay was received by Denktas.

    Responding to questions of reporters prior to the meeting, Denktas said that he will inform the United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General about his views regarding the proximity talks process by a letter within a few days.

    Denktas noted that he will not go to Geneva for the proximity talks.

    [03] CELIK, FORMER DEPUTY OF BANNED RP, RELEASED

    ANKARA - Ibrahim Halil Celik, the former deputy of the banned Welfare Party (RP), was released on Thursday.

    After Celik gave testimony in the Ankara State Security Court (DGM), the chief judge of the court Mehmet Orhan Karadeniz decided to lift the arrest warrant regarding Celik and also decided to release Celik.

    Celik had earlier been tried by Diyarbakır DGM for ''provoking people to hatred in respect of race, religion, sect and region'' under Article 312/2 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).

    Ibrahim Halil Celik returned to Turkey on Wednesday to benefit from law on conditional release. Celik was stripped off his deputyship after Consitutional Court closed the Welfare Party (RP).

    [04] TURKISH-TRNC PARTNERSHIP COUNCIL

    TO HOLD ITS FOURTH MEETING ON FRIDAY
    ANKARA - The fourth meeting of the Turkish-Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Partnership Council will take place on Friday. Foreign Ministry issued a statement and said the meeting would start at 10:00 local time.

    A statement will be released to the press at 13:00 local time.
