  • [01] PALESTINIAN INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AND PLANNING MINISTER SHAAT IN ANKARA

    ANKARA - Palestinian International Cooperation and Planning Minister Nabil Shaad said on Saturday that they expected Turkey to assist them in solving unemployment problem in Palestine.

    Shaad who came to Turkey on a two-day official visit, met on Sunday with Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, Suleyman Demirel, the former President of Turkey, and Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit.

    At the meetings, Shaad noted that the unemployment was one of the most serious problems in Palestine.

    He stressed that unemployed people had a tendency for violence.

    Noting that they wanted Israel to create job opportunities to those people, Shaad said that they expected Turkey to convey their demand to Israel.

    Shaad bought two letters from Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to Demirel and Prime Minister Ecevit.

    He underlined importance of deploying a United Nations force in the region in order to protect Palestinians from Israeli attacks.

    Meanwhile, Turkish side said, ''Israel does not accept such a demand. An investigation will be launched on what can be done regarded with security in the region.''

    [02] EXPORTS FROM GAP REGION DECREASE 2.1 PERCENT

    GAZIANTEP - The exports of agricultural, animal and industrial products from the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) region in the first eleven months of 2000 decreased 2.1 percent to 510 million 875 thousand U.S. dollars.

    In the same period last year, the region had exported 521 million 913 thousand U.S. dollars of agricultural, animal and industrial products.

    Abdulkadir Cikmaz, the Chairman of the Southeastern Anatolian Exporters' Association, told the A.A correspondent on Saturday that in the first eleven months of the year, they exported 294 million 55 thousand U.S. dollars in textiles; 76 million 870 thousand U.S. dollars in grain-cereals; 46 million 87 thousand U.S. dollars in dried fruits; 1 million 720 thousand U.S. dollars in livestock; and 92 million 143 thousand U.S. dollars in fresh fruits, vegetables and industrial products.

    [03] INCREASE IN EXPORTS FROM AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR CONTINUES

    BURSA - Exports from automotive sector between January 1 and November 30 increased 5.9 percent to 2 billion 365 million U.S. dollars and the increase in exports in November was 7 percent.

    According to the statistics of the Uludag Exporters' Association (UIB), the total exports from the automotive sector and sub-industry increased from 237 million 925 thousand U.S. dollars in November of 1999 to 254 million 685 thousand U.S. dollars in November of 2000.

    The total automotive exports in first eleven months of 2000 reached 2 billion 365 million 878 thousand U.S. dollars. The total exports in the same period of 1999 had been 2 billion 233 million 515 thousand U.S. dollars.

    ANKARA - The recent fluctuations in the markets affected the banks' deposit account interest rates and these interest rates increased between 1 and 10 points in last one week.

    ANKARA - The consumer credit interest rates of banks increased to nine percent due to recent fluctuations in the markets.
