    RIFAAT'S SECRET VISIT TO TURKEY
Rifaat al-Assad, the brother of late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, came to Turkey to request support to replace his elder brother who was on his deathbed. Rifaat al-Assad, who understood that his elder brother would transfer the power to his son Bashar al-Assad rather than himself, applied to the Turkish Embassy in London in the end of last year. Rifaat al-Assad met with an official at the embassy. Rifaat al-Assad said that his elder brother Hafez al-Assad was pursuing policies against Turkey and that he was the only one who could change this policy. Rifaat al-Assad also said that he wanted to go to Turkey and hold contacts. The embassy informed Turkey about Rifaat's request. Rifaat al-Assad was brought to Turkey three days before the new year. The visit was under the control of National Intelligence Organization (MIT). Rifaat al-Assad told the officials his opinion about Hafez al-Assad's health condition and reiterated the same commitments, requesting Turkey's support to take over the power in Syria. Rifaat al-Assad left Turkey six days later. A government source told the Hurriyet that they only listened to Rifaat al-Assad but later decided to support Bashar al-Assad.

President Rauf Denktas met with Alvaro De Soto, the Special Representative of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to Cyprus, for the second time. At the meeting, President Denktas stressed that the Turkish Cypriots could not accept the resolution which ignores the reality of two states and the equal sovereignty of the two sides on Cyprus.
