    HURRIYET (LIBERAL)

    RIFAAT'S SECRET VISIT TO TURKEY
    Rifaat al-Assad, the brother of late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, came to Turkey to request support to replace his elder brother who was on his deathbed. Rifaat al-Assad, who understood that his elder brother would transfer the power to his son Bashar al-Assad rather than himself, applied to the Turkish Embassy in London in the end of last year. Rifaat al-Assad met with an official at the embassy. Rifaat al-Assad said that his elder brother Hafez al-Assad was pursuing policies against Turkey and that he was the only one who could change this policy. Rifaat al-Assad also said that he wanted to go to Turkey and hold contacts. The embassy informed Turkey about Rifaat's request. Rifaat al-Assad was brought to Turkey three days before the new year. The visit was under the control of National Intelligence Organization (MIT). Rifaat al-Assad told the officials his opinion about Hafez al-Assad's health condition and reiterated the same commitments, requesting Turkey's support to take over the power in Syria. Rifaat al-Assad left Turkey six days later. A government source told the Hurriyet that they only listened to Rifaat al-Assad but later decided to support Bashar al-Assad.

    TURKISH SIGNATURE TO MOLDOVAN CAPITAL
    The International Flights Terminal building which was constructed in Chisinau, Moldova, by the Turkish Akfen-Summa consortium, was opened on Friday. The Turkish companies built the building with the loan provided by the World Bank. Most of the equipment used in the terminal building were imported from Turkey.

    CYPRUS CRISIS
    The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) plans to take measures against the resolution of the United Nations Security Council extending the mission of Cyprus Peace Force (UNFICYP) until December 15, 2000 by dropping the addendum which envisages that the Peace Force has to sign a separate agreement with the TRNC in order to stay in Northern Cyprus. President Rauf Denktas met with Alvaro De Soto, the Special Representative of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to Cyprus, for the second time. At the meeting, President Denktas stressed that the Turkish Cypriots could not accept the resolution which ignores the reality of two states and the equal sovereignty of the two sides on Cyprus.

    AKBULUT: ''WE WISH THERE WERE NOT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT''
    Parliament Speaker Yildirim Akbulut said that they wish there were not capital punishment. Akbulut said that they have to discuss and evaluate Turkey's conditions and what these conditions require. When a journalist reminded him the statement of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer who said that the capital punishment should be abolished prior to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Akbulut said, ''this is not that much easy at this stage. Of course, we can think of abolishing the capital punishment in a normal process.''

    FOUR GUARANTEES FROM DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER BAHCELI
    Deputy Prime Minister and the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahceli ended all the early general election and crisis discussions with the statement he made in Tokat province of the Black Sea Region. These are the messages of Bahceli: ''There is not a crisis in the government. There is not a confidence problem among the coalition partners. Also, I did not propose early general elections. The parliament can withdraw from recess and work to make Constitutional amendments which will end the Supreme Court discussion.''

    ''TURKEY IS GOING WELL, ITS RATING CAN INCREASE''
    The Standard and Poor's (S and P), a rating organization, issued a report about Turkey's economic performances. The report said that as the sensitivity of the public finance against the political and foreign shocks decrease and the decrease tendency of inflation continues, Turkey's rating which is B (+) at the moment, can be upgraded to BB (-). Relative to most of its B rated peers, Turkey has higher per capita income, a stronger and more diverse economy, and lower external imbalances; however on fiscal inflation measures, Turkey compares poorly, the report also said. The report noted that Turkey should not permit political instability to be successful in the economic program.

    CUMHURIYET (LEFT)

    ''AN ILLEGAL ORGANIZATION JUST LIKE AN ARMY''
    According to a report prepared by the intelligence units, the illegal ''Jerusalem Forces'' organization has nearly 15 thousand members. The intelligence units deciphered the ''Jerusalem Forces''. ''Jerusalem Commandos'' which involved in assasinations of secularist journalists and writers including Ugur Mumcu and Prof. Dr. Ahmet Taner Kislali, is a sub-branch of the Jerusalem Forces. The illegal organization was set up by an order of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1990.

    MINA URGAN TO BE LAID TO REST
    Mina Urgan, a prominent writer who passed away at the age of 85 on Thursday, will be laid to rest in Asiyan Graveyard in Istanbul. A ceremony will take place out of respect to Urgan in front of the Freedom and Solidarity Party's (ODP) Headquarters in Beyoglu district of Istanbul at 10:00 a.m.

    CAKICI HAS CELL PHONE AND CHALLENGES STATE
    The wardens of Kartal Prison cannot take the cell phone of notorious mafia boss Alaattin Cakici, whose supporters turned Bayrampasa prison into bloodshed. Cakici swore at the officials from the camera in the courtyard. It was claimed that a cell phone was brought to Cakici, who is kept in Kartal Prison, 15 days ago and that the prison administration cannot take the cell phone. A total of five cell phones had earlier been seized from Cakici's cell in the prison. Cakici said, ''if you are brave enough, come and take it.''

    BIG EXAMINATION
    A total of 1,414,820 students will take the nationwide university entrance exam throughout Turkey and in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The exam will start at 09:30 a.m. and last for three hours. The results of the exam will be made public in the end of July.

    YENI BINYIL (LIBERAL)

    MYSTERIOUS ROBBERY IN IZMIR
    A total of 21 billion Turkish liras (TL), 10,000 U.S. dollars, and 10,000 German marks were stolen from Keresteciler Branch of Halk Bankasi in western Izmir province. Unidentified assailants entered into Halk Bankasi branch on Friday night by breaking down the alarm of the bank. They took the keys of bank's safe from the drawer where they were being kept and entered into the safe. The robbers who opened the safe, stole 21 billion TL, 10,000 U.S. dollars and 10,000 German Marks and ran away. Security officials said that the robbers found the keys of the safe without checking the other drawers. Security officials think that the robbers got help from workers of the bank because the alarm was easily broken down and the place of the keys were known.

    STATE MINISTER YUCELEN VISITS AUSCHWITZ CONCENTRATION CAMP
    Rustu Kazim Yucelen, the State Minister for human rights, visited Auschwitz, one of the biggest concentration camps in Nazi era. Yucelen, who had attended the ''Europe Mass Communication Sixth Ministers Conference'' in Krakow, Poland, spent his last day in this country by visiting the Auschwitz Concentration Camp together with an accompanying delegation. Auschwitz, located nearby the provincial Polish town of Oshwiecim in Galacia, was established by order of Heinrich Himmler on 27 April 1940. It was used as a concentration and extermination camp between 1940 and 1945 by the Nazis. A total of 1 million 300 thousand people were concentrated in the camp. 1 million 100 thousand of them including 240 thousand children, were massacred in gas chambers. Yucelen was deeply impressed with piles of shoes belonged to child victims of the Holocaust.

    TURKIYE (RIGHT)

    BAHCELI: ''THERE IS NO GOVERNMENT CRISIS''
    Devlet Bahceli, the Deputy Prime Minister and the leader of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), said, ''There is neither a government crisis nor a problem of confidence in the government. Not desiring Yilmaz's entrance into the cabinet means not desiring the ANAP in the government. But we are coalition partners with the ANAP.'' Bahceli noted, ''we proposed to amend Article 83 and 100 of the Constitution which govern prosecution of MPs, currently protected by a strong immunity coverage. If we amend these two articles, discussions on decisions taken by parliamentary investigation commissions, will be minimised.''

    SECURITY MEETING IN DIYARBAKIR
    Police chiefs of 11 provinces convened in southeastern Diyarbakir province under the chairmanship of Turan Genc, the Director General of Security. Addressing journalists following the meeting, Genc noted, ''we have achieved great success in our operations against the terrorist Hezbollah organization. All leading names of the organization except one, were captured in the operations. Our success has increased people's confidence in the State.''

    ROUTE TOWARDS GUNS
    The guardians explained how the guns and cell phones are brought in the Kartal Prison. Two routes are followed to bring the guns and cell phones in the prison. The guardians said that the guns and cell phones are brought in the prison through the window of the kitchen and the A Tower. The guardians and other officials have active role in bringing the guns and cell phones into the prison.
