[12] DENKTAS, PRESIDENT OF TRNC, IN SAMSUN: - ''WE EXPERIENCED IN 1963 AND 1967 WHAT THE PEOPLE OF KOSOVO ARE NOW SUFFERING. NOW, WE THANK TO GOD'' - ''THE CYPRUS ISSUE CAN BE SOLVED BY DIALOGUE, BUT GREEK-CYPRIOTS DON'T ACCEDE TO IT''

SAMSUN, May 6 (A.A) - Rauf Denktas, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said on Thursday that they follow the developments in Kosovo with concern, stressing that ''we experienced in 1963 and 1967 what the people of Kosovo are now suffering. Now, we thank to God.''

Responding a question about the developments in Kosovo, Denktas said, ''we experienced the today's situation in Kosovo in 1963 and 1967. During that period, one fourth of our people were forced to leave their homelands. We lived as immigrants for eleven years till were saved by Turkey. We once again fell the grief and and suffer when we see the people escaping from Kosovo, and we thank to God because we have a motherland who saved us. We are very lucky. If we would have waited the NATO for an intervention like the Kosovars, the Greek-Cypriots would have killed all of the Turks on Cyprus.''

Responding to another question, Denktas said the problems on the island can be solved by dialogue but the Greek-Cypriots don't accede to it.

''We are always ready for cooperation if they want peace on Cyprus. However, they prefer armament. Greek-Cypriots are making intense efforts for armament, but they can't win this race. They were obliged to send S-300 missiles to Crete, but it is a very sensitive region. Let's wait and see what they will do. The S-300s won't damage anybody except themselves. They throw their money away. They pretend not to see Turkey's strategical interest in the region,'' Denktas said.

[18] TRIAL OF TERRORIST CHIEF - ATACANLI, DEPUTY SPKOESMAN OF FOREIGN MINISTRY: ''NOBODY WILL BE GRANTED WITH PRIVILEGE ABOUT ATTANDENCE TO THE TRIAL'' - ''THE STATEMENTS OF THE ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER ARE NOT SURPRISING AS HE EARLIER ASSUMED AN ATTITUDE AGAINST LAW''

ANKARA, May 6 (A.A) - The Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that only the personal applications of the people of foreign origin are acceptable and nobody will be granted with privilege about the attendance to the trial of Abdullah Ocalan, the chief of the terrorist organization, which will start on May 31 on Imrali Island.

Staging his weekly press conference, Sermet Atacanli, the Deputy Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, responded the questions about the conditions for the attendance of foreign people to the continuous trial of terrorist chief.

Atacanli stressed that the people of foreign origin, who want to watch the trial, can't make application with their identity cards given by the organizations at which they are working.

Recalling that the Ankara State Security Court (DGM) Chief Public Prosecutor's Office issued a statement on April 30 about the methods of watching the trial, Atacanli said that the people of foreign origin, who want to watch the trial within the framework of the existing procedures, have to apply to the Ankara DGM Chief Public Prosecutor's Office through their Embassies.

Stressing that the approval or rejection of those applications are based on the evaluation of the Ankara DGM Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Atacanli said that nobody will be granted with privilege about the attendance to the trial.

Responding to a question, Atacanli said that Faruk Logoglu, the Deputy Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, briefed on Wednesday the representatives of nearly 40 countries on the trial of the terrorist chief.

Atacanli said Logoglu in that briefing gave information about the capacity of the court room, transportation opportunities, and security measures.

Responding to a question about the statements of the Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema about the trial, Atacanli said Italian Premier showed a biased approach to the issue.

Recalling that D'Alema made a statement saying that the method of trial of Ocalan is unacceptable, Atacanli said he didn't find those statements as surprising.

''It is still of remembrance that the Italian Prime Minister hosted terrorist chief for a long time, and beyond this, he bargained with several countries for providing shelter for Ocalan by violating the laws and international agreements, and consequently, he expelled the terrorist chief from Italy,'' Atacanli stressed.

Atacanli emphasized that D'Alema's making such a biased statement before the start of trial was not surprising as he earlier assumed an attitude against the law.

President Demirel said the education of 200 thousand children by 10 thousand teachers in yesterday's Turkey with a population of 12 million, reached an education of 15 million children by 650 thousand teachers in today's Turkey with a polulation of 65 million.

''This is a good figure. The total number of children registered to primary schools in 1998-99 education year is more than the total number of registrations in primary schools in Germany, France, and Britain. This is a young Turkey, but there are very heavy burdens on her shoulders,'' Demirel said.

''Turkey is now selling every kind of product to the countries from where she had purchased everything in the past. The Turkish refrigerator factories have 15 percent stake in the British refrigerator market. Turkey is now making 70 percent of her total exports to Europe from where she had purchased everything in the past. The trade volume, which failed to increase over to 1.5 million U.S. dollars, is now reaching 100 billion U.S. dollars. Turkey achieved 28 billion U.S. dollars in exports last year despite tough conditions,'' Demirel stated.

The introduction part of the booklet stresses that Greece was caught red- handed, and says, ''in the following pages, the readers will find the story of Greek support to PKK terrorism, symbolized in the Greek effort to help Ocalan escape justice. This is just the tip of the iceberg. The trial of Ocalan can be expected to shed further light on the details of the external support given to the PKK, most notably by Greece, an ally and neighbor of Turkey. While international attention is for the time being focused on the crisis in Kosovo, Greek involvement with terrorism can be neither forgotten nor forgiven. And the disturbing question remains yet to be answered: What happens when a member country betray another allied country?''

In the annex part of the booklet includes the photograph showing Greek intelligence officer Kalenderidis hand in hand with terrorist chief Ocalan; the statements of Greek officials about the issue; Ocalan's Greek-Cypriot passport; Ocalan's authorization of his Greek lawyer to follow up on his application for political asylum in Greece, and snapshots of the PKK supporters who stormed the Greek embassies following Ocalan's capture on February, 16, 1999.

Addressing a speech in the meeting with the industrialists and businessmen from Kayseri Chamber of Industry, Stalev noted that his country overcame the political transition period and that his country completed the privatization initiatives in many fields other than heavy industry.

Noting that the tragical incidents in Kosovo and the crisis in Yugoslavia affects the economy of Bulgaria in a large scale, Stalev stated that the steps of the international community taken for providing security and peace in Yugoslavia are very pleasing.

Recalling that the foreign exchange reserves of Bulgaria increased to 5 billion German marks after the single party government started to lead Bulgaria, Stalev stressed that the inflation decreased to 5 to 6 percent last year but that the banks do not easily give credit.

Stalev said that to this end, the investments are not in the desired level and that there is significant unemployment in Bulgaria, adding that the foreign capital realized investments worth of 1.8 billion U.S. dollars since 1990 and that Germany is the foreign country which realizes the most of the investments in Bulgaria.

Pointing out that the Turkish businessmen will participate in activities of constructing a free way and a power plant in Bulgaria and Bulgaria will sell two times more electricity to Turkey, Stalev noted that the foreign investors do not have to take permission to construct factories other than banks and defense industry and that they have liberal conditions for investment.

There is Orthodox Christianity behind it. We suffered from the things Kosovo suffers today for 11 years.''

Stressing that the Greek Cypriot side continues to pursue an uncompromising attitude, Denktas said ''after they understood that their Enosis ideal won't be realized, they now wish to isolate the Turkish side by the help of Europe and to disturb the balance installed by the Lausanne Treaty. Europe insists on not seeing the realities on the island.''

TRNC President Denktas said that Cyprus will never be a Greek colony, adding Turkey has always been besides Turkish Cypriots.

[32] TURKEY-US-DEFENSE - GENERAL DANDIN: ''OUR FMS DEBTS SHOULD BE CLEARED, SEIA SHOULD BE REVISED AND THE U.S. SHOULD SUPPORT US''

WASHINGTON D.C., May 6 (A.A) - General Batmaz Dandin, the Chairman of the General Staff Planning and Principles Department said on Thursday that Turkey's FMS to the U.S. (credit debts for military exports) have to be cleared up, the Agreement on Defense and Economic Cooperation between the two countries has to be revised and the American administration has to support the defense demands of Turkey in order to improve defense relations between Turkey and the U.S.

General Dandin said that the U.S. gradually becomes a source which can't be trusted, adding ''if the U.S. wishes to get shares from our defense purchases, they should support our demands of purchase.''

Addressing the defense group of the 18th anniversary of the Turkish- American Relations Council meeting, General Dandin said that the Agreement on the Defense and Economic Cooperation which was signed in 1980 is being implemented in a way which does not meet the demands of Turkey.

Recalling that the U.S.'s military assitance and credits reached 800-900 million dollars annually in recent years, General Dandin said that this assistance was also cut off last year, adding these developments and the unwillingness of the U.S. in providing various weaponry systems to Turkey is negative.

Noting that the U.S. brings the issue of human rights to the agenda when selling weapons to Turkey, General Dandin said that double standart is applied against Turkey regarding this issue.

Turkish sources said that the U.S's giving the statute of most favoured nation statute to China, where human rights are seriously violated and her selling weapons to Saudi Arabia show the double standart against Turkey.

''Our purchase of weapons from a country which does not limit our purchases will be quite normal,'' said Dandin, recalling that Turkey will buy 150 billion dollars of weapons in 30 years and the U.S. has to take this reality into account.

Noting that the ethnical lobbies in the U.S. effects the U.S. administration which negatively influences Turkish-American relations, adding ''issues like the Cyprus problem and human rights should not come to the agenda of all Turkish-American contacts. The U.S. should rather attribute importance to issues like the Middle East and Caucasus which are to the interests of the two countries.''
