[08] THE ECONOMIST ANALYZES POLLS ON 18 APRIL: - ''ECEVIT BECAME WHITE HOPE OF TURKS WHO DON'T WANT ISLAMISTS BE THE POWER AGAIN'' - ''THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT ECEVIT HASN'T BECOME A PART OF A CORRUPTION IN HIS 42-YEAR POLITICAL CAREER AND HIS ROLE IN APPREHENSION OF OCALAN IN KENYA'' - ''HOWEVER, ECEVIT WILL FAIL IN COLLECTING SUFFICIENT VOTE FOR TAKING THE POWER ALONE''

LONDON, April 10 (A.A) - The Economist, which was published in Britain weekly, in its analysis on the general elections on 18 April, gave a broad place to Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, who was seen to raise his points in recent months, saying, ''Ecevit became the white hope of those Turkish people who don't want the islamists to come back into the power.''

The magazine recalled that the public polls revealed that Ecevit's Democratic Left Party (DSP) is running almost neck-to-neck with the Virtue Party (FP), which represents the islamists, but Ecevit has increased his popularity.

Claiming that the reason for this was the low performance of Turkey's two main secularist politicians Mesut Yilmaz of the Motherland Party (ANAP) and Tansu Ciller of the True Path Party (DYP), the magazine said the other main reason was the windfall of the capture in Kenya of Abdullah Ocalan, the chief of the terrorist organization. The magazine said Ecevit has been greeted by adoring crowds shouting ''Welcome Kenya's Conqueror''.

Noting that it is the fact that Ecevit is one of the very few Turkish politicians never to have been accused of corruption, the magazine said Ecevit is unlikely to win enough seats in the new parliament to form a government on his own.

The magazine said a few daring souls argue that Ecevit should team up with Recai Kutan's Virtue Party (FP) because that would help to check the growing polarization between religious and secular Turks which is fast becoming the greatest threat to national stability.

The Economist said it is unlikely to happen as the army has made it clear that it doesn't want islamists in the government.

The Economist said it became evident that powerful circles in Turkey like the army and Turkish Association of Industrialists and Businessmen (TUSIAD) will most welcome another Ecevit-Yilmaz coalition, adding, ''if the islamists are indeed to be excluded from government, at least three secular parties may have to glue themselves together to form a workable parliamentary majority. But the necessary glue is in short supply.''
