Responding to questions on the state-run television channel TRT-1, Ecevit defended the view that the threats to Turkey are from abroad.

''I suppose these threats are from abroad. It was proved by the leadership of Ataturk, the founder of the modern and secular Republic of Turkey that Islam could suit with the modernity and secularism. And this makes the sovereign powers and administrative staff in several countries of the Middle East uneasy. They are afraid of the fact that their own people can admire the regime in Turkey. However, the tendency to protect the democratic Republic of Turkey becomes evident as we've seen today. These were the demonstrations of a free society. This was the attempt of the Turkish nation to claim responsibility for the secular Republic.''

''The government provided for the dissolution of the gangs and Abdullah Ocalan and the chief of the separatist terrorist organization gets weaker. I think that one shouldn't be afraid of coalitions in Turkey,'' added Ecevit.

Responding to a question concerning the law on amnesty, Ecevit said that the Democratic Left Party (DSP) has completed its activities.

''We hope that the draft proposal on the amnesty will be submitted to the Parliament. If we can't get approval from our coalition partners, then we'll submit it to the Parliament by ourselves,'' Ecevit said.
