  • [01] ALGERIAN FOREIGN MINISTER DUE TO ANKARA

    ANKARA, June 20 (A.A) - Ahmed Attaf, the Algerian Foreign Minister will pay an official visit to Turkey on Sunday as a guest of Foreign Minister Isamil Cem, it is reported on Friday.

    Foreign Ministry said in a written statement that Turkey will take up relations with Algeria in all respects during the visit of Attaf between June 21-24. The two foreign ministers will also exchange views about regional and international issues that concern the two countries.

    The two foreign ministers will also sign a cooperation protocol between the two foreign ministries on Monday.

    [02] PRESS CONFERENCE OF YILMAZ AND HIS ROMANIAN COUNTERPART RADU VASSLA - YILMAZ: ''TURKEY NEVER LET CYPRUS BECOME A GREEK CYPRIOT ISLAND''

    BUCHAREST, June 20 (A.A) - Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz addressed on Friday a press conference with his Romanian counterpart Radu Vassla after he conluded his contacts in Romania. Yilmaz told the reporters that Turkey never let Cyprus become a Greek Cypriot island, and warned Greece not to test Turkey's determination again.

    Describing the deployment of the Greek warplanes on the Southern Cyprus as the sign of Greek Cypriots' aim towards testing the Turkey's determination, Yilmaz pointed out that ''the final purpose of the Greek Cypriot side is to make Cyprus a Greek Cypriot island''.

    Yilmaz stressed that the deployment of the Greek warplanes on the island along with the Greek Cypriots' programme concerning the deployment of the Russian made S-300 missiles are threats against Turkey's security.

    Noting that Turkey is ready to cooperate with anyone in order to find a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem, Yilmaz emphasized the first condition of a possible solution is that the Greek Cypriot side should give up their initiatives aiming to make Cyprus a Greek Cypriot island and to make Turkish Cypriot community a minority.

    Responding to a question about the mediation of Britain on the island, Yilmaz said, ''we don't expect anyone to mediate. Turkey only reminds Britain her mission as the guarantor of London and Zurich Agreements.''

    Yilmaz stressed that the deployment of the S-300 missiles on the island damages not only the peace in Cyprus, but the regional stability in the Mediterranian. He added that Turkey will not hesitate on taking all necessary measures against it.

    Mentioning his contacts in Romania, Yilmaz noted that his visit to Romania was very productive. He said that the two countries have many common points, adding that Turkey will do her utmost to improve economic and commercial relations with Romania. He also pointed out that they aim to increase the trade volume between Turkey and Romania up to one billion US Dollars in 1998.

    Yilmaz told the reporters that the Kosovo problem was also taken up during the meetings, stressing that Turkey wants Kosovo problem to reach a peaceful solution without bloodshed.

    Mesut Yilmaz noted that Romania is very important for the regional stability, adding that Turkey supports Romania's membership to the NATO and to the other international organizations.

    Addressing the press conference, the Romanian Prime Minister Radu Vaslla called Turkish companies to make investments in Romania.

    Vaslla pointed out that the geostrategical importance of the two countries will increase when the project of the Caspian oil is realized.

    Noting that Romania is worried about the latest developments in Kosovo and the former Yugoslavia, Vaslaa said ''the territorial integrity of the Yugoslavian Federation should be preserved.''

    Vaslls said that the cooperation between Turkey and Romania will be helpful on the struggle against organized crimes and drug smuggling.

    Meanwhile Isin Celebi, the State Minister, and Rodu Berceanu, the Romanian Industry and Trade Minister signed a memorandum of understanding foreseing the measures to be taken for improvement of the commercial and economic relations between the two countries, and the 19th Term Joint Economic Commission meetings to be held in Ankara in November.

    Before leaving Romania for Turkey, Yilmaz came together with the Turkish businessmen in Romania. He also received Andreo Plesu, the Romanian Foreign Minister.

    [03] EYUP GANICH, THE PRESIDENT OF BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINIAN FEDERATION DUE TO VISIT TURKEY

    ANKARA, June 20 (A.A) - Eyup Ganich, the President of the Bosnia- Herzegovinian Federation will arrive in Turkey in June 21 for a three day official visit as the guest of Bulent Ecevit, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State, it was reported on Friday.

    The Foreign Ministery stated that the Ghanich's visit to Turkey will be the first official visit from Bosnia-Herzegovinian Federation to Turkey after the Daiton Peace Agreement and general elections in 1996.

    Ganich will be received by President Suleyman Demirel and Hikmet Cetin, the Speaker of the Parliament. He is scheduled to meet with Ismail Cem, the Foreign Minister.

    The bilateral relations between the two countries and regional and international developments including the Kosovo problem, will be discussed during the Turkey visit of Ganich.

    [04] ASHRAVI, PALESTINIAN MINISTER OF HIGHER EDUCATION, DUE TO VISIT TURKEY

    ANKARA, June 20 (A.A) - Prof. Hanan Ashravi, the Palestinian Minister of Higher Education, will come to Turkey in June 21 as the official guest of Hikmet Ulugbay, the National Education Minister, it was reported on Friday.

    Ashravi known as a successful woman politician and the leading name of the Palestinian delegation who joined the Middle East peace negotiations, will be received by President Suleyman Demirel and Bulent Ecevit, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of State. She is also scheduled to meet with Ismail Cem, the Foreign Minister.

    An educational cooperation agreement between the National Education Ministry and the Palestinian High Education Ministry is expected to be signed for the years of 1998-2000.

    The Foreign Ministry's statement concerning the visit of Prof. Ashravi noted that ''Turkey aims to improve relations with Palestine. Mutual visits between the senior officials of the two countries are extremely important for realizing this purpose''.

    [05] HARDY, THE CHAIRMAN OF TURKEY DESK OF IMF, MEETS WITH UGUR BAYAR, THE CHAIRMAN OF PRIVATIZATION ADMINISTRATION

    ANKARA, June 20 (A.A) - The delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) headed by Martin Hardy, the Chairman of Turkey Desk of the IMF, visited on Friday Ugur Bayar, the Chairman of the Privatization Administration.

    Bayar gave information about the Turkey's privatization plans for the next year at the meeting.

    The IMF delegation also held talks with the senior officials from the Undersecretariat of Treasury and the Central Bank.

    Members of the IMF delegation will come together with the high level bureaucrats to form the framework of the staff monitoring programme in the coming days.

    [06] UTKAN, THE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN: ''THE SECURITY OF TRNC, PROTECTION OF STABILITY AND SECURITY IN THE REGION AND THE MAINTENANCE OF THE STRATEGICAL BALANCE IN EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN ARE OUR MAIN FOREIGN POLICY TARGETS''

    ANKARA, June 20 (A.A) - Necati Utkan, the Foreign Ministry Spokesman said on Friday that the security of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), protection of security and stability in the region and maintenance of the strategical balance in Eastern Mediterranean are the main foreign policy targets of Turkey.

    ''Turkey is resolved to take all measures to eliminate any kind of threat directed against these targets,'' said Utkan.

    Responding to a question, Utkan pointed out that Turkey has evaluated the landing of four Greek F-16 war planes and two transport airplanes at Baphos military base in the Greek Cypriot administration as a new element of the implementation of the joint military doctrine between Greece and the Greek Cypriot side and a development directed to upset the security and stability in the region and on the island.

    ''We have explained our reaction at the international society and Turkey sent F-16 planes to TRNC to show our determination to protect the peace and stability in the region and on Cyprus. Three of our jet planes which landed at Gecitkale airport returned to Turkey yesterday. The other three left the island today and returned to Turkey after participating in the training held within the framework of Seawolf exercise. Our diplomatic efforts aiming to urge Greece and the Greek Cypriot side to end activities which escalate tension on Cyprus and in the region, will continue,'' Utkan added.

    [07] REPRESENTATIVES OF INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS COME TOGETHER WITH MEMBERS OF TURKISH COMMUNITY IN CHICAGO

    CHICAGO, June 20 (A.A) - Representatives of the international human rights organizations who were scheduled to meet with Hikmet Sami Turk, the State Minister responsible for the human rights, came together with the members of the Turkish community in Chicago after Turk's flight from Washington D.C to Chicago was cancelled, it was reported on Friday.

    Representatives of the Amnesty International, the American Civil Liberties Union and the other international human rights organizations, expressed their sympathy for Turkey at the meeting.

    Reminding that the US overcomed the problems regarded with the human rights by intense efforts, representatives pointed out, ''we want to share our experiences with Turkish officials''.

    Turk will leave the US today for Turkey.

    [08] STATE MINISTER ANDICAN IN GERMANY - ANDICAN CALLS TURKISH BUSINESSMEN TO MAKE INVESTMENTS IN TURKISH REPUBLICS

    DUSSELDORF, June 20 (A.A) - Ahat Andican, the State Minister responsible for the relations with the Turkish Republics, who is in Germany for an official visit, called on Friday the Turkish businessmen living in European countries, to make investments in the Turkish Republics in the Central Asia.

    Andican visited the European Turkish Businessmen and Industrialists Association based in Dusseldorf in Germany, and gave technical informations to the businessmen about Turkey's encouragement programme related with the investments in the Turkish Republics. He added, ''Turkey prepares to make investments in the Turkish Republics in the framework of a systematic programme in the coming years''.

    Noting that the investment volume in the Central Asian Republics is more than 8 billion US Dollars, Andican invited Turkish businessmen to take shares from this potential. He said, ''we suppose that our biggest rivals in the Central Asia will be Pakistan and China''.

    Andican also stressed that the 70 percents of the concluded works in the Turkish Republics belonged to the Turkish businessmen.

    Tugay Ulucevik, the Turkish Ambassador to Germany, and Fatih Ceylan the Turkish Consul General in Dusseldorf, were also in attendance at the meeting.

    [09] EXPO'98 WORLD FAIR IN PORTUGAL - GREAT INTEREST IN TURKISH PAVILION - TURKISH DELEGATION HEADED BY ONER, DEPUTY UNDERSECRETARY OF MARITIME, VISITS FAIR AND TURKISH PAVILION

    LISBON, June 20 (A.A) - A Turkish delegation headed by Kenan Oner, the Deputy Undersecretary of Maritime, visited the Expo'98 World Fair in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal on Friday.

    Nearly 170 countries including Turkey, take part in the Expo'98 World Fair that began on May 22 and will end on September 30. The main theme of the fair that aims to collect existing information and experience concerning the oceans, is ''The Oceans, an Inheritance for the Future Generations''.

    More than 100 thousand foreigners visited the Turkish pavilion so far. The Turkish pavilion takes place among the most interesting pavilions of the fair. Turkish foods, historical works belonging the Turkish civilizations and the objects concerning the maritime were displayed at the Turkish pavilion. A sultanate caique belonged to Sultan Abdulaziz that was constructed at the end of 18th century and the Ottoman Navy Flag of 14 metres which belonged to Selim III are being exhibited.

    Oner stated that they will celebrate the August 30 as the Turkish National Day, in Lisbon. He added that the Savarona Yatch of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Founder of Turkish Republic, will be brought to Lisbon.

    [10] TURKISH-ROMANIAN RELATIONS

    ANKARA, June 20 (A.A) - The Undersecretariat for Foreign Trade said on Saturday that Turkey and Romania reached a consensus of opinion concerning the construction and operation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) terminal station in Constanta Port and modernization of the part of the existing pipeline which pass via Romania carrying Russian natural gas to Turkey.

    Isın Celebi, the State Minister and Radu Berceanu, the Romanian Industry and Trade Minister signed a memorandum of understanding at the end of the Turkish-Romanian Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meetings during the visit of Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz to Romania.

    The existing commercial and economic relations between the two countries were revised during the JEC.

    Noting that the agreement on the free trade area, which entered into force on February 1 have positively effected the commercial relations, the memorandum of understanding pointed out that the trade volume between the two countries should reach a level which reflects the increasing economic potential.

    Stressing that the 19th term Turkish-Romanian JEC meeting and Business Council meeting will be held in November, the memorandum of understanding added that the two countries decided to improve their commercial and economic relations and economic cooperation within the framework of Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC).
