    ANKARA, April 6 (A.A) - Anadolu Ajansı (A.A) celebrates its 78th anniversary on Monday.

    The computer news network of A.A, which has 20 offices in Turkey and 20 offices abroad, serves with the technology of 2000s in its 78th anniversary.

    Anadolu Ajansı has started transmitting its news items through a system called ''Vertical Blanking Interline'' (VBI). This system provides transmitting news through satellite to subscribers very fastly. A.A has not only reached every point of Turkey, but also extended from Europe to Turkish Republics, the Middle East and Northern Africa by this system.

    Besides, A.A is one of the four biggest news agencies of the world in the field of photography. More than 100 pictures reach subscribers very fastly every day through the computer system. This year pictures will also be sent through satellite to further improve this service.

    Again within this year, the project concerning development of electronic broadcast in internet will also be put into force, so that the news of A.A will reach the whole world both in English and Turkish.

    A.A, which transmits approximately 550 news every day, works 24 hours of the day just like the biggest news agencies of the world.

    Anadolu Ajansı will continue to launch efforts in the year 2000s within the framework of the principle of Ataturk, the founder of modern and secular Turkish Republic, who had said that ''A.A will herald the voice of Turkey to the world.''

    Greece took extraordinary security measures for the visit of Chief of General Staff Gen. Ismail Hakkı Karadayı to Athens. The visit of Karadayı was covered by Greek media, Greek people know Gen. Karadayı well as he participated in Greek National Day reception held in Greek Embassy in Ankara.

    Time Magazine did not include Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern and secular Turkish Republic in its list of ''Men of the Century,'' who got more than one million votes after Churcill during the campaign.

    Oltan Sungurlu, the Minister of Justice said that organized crime activities which are known as ''mafia'' include various kinds of crimes both at the national and international level. Sungurlu stressed that these people who are in jails acquire all kinds of opportunities, for instance they have weapons and mobile phones in jails.

    CUSTOMS TO BE CLEANSED WITHIN ONE NIGHT
    State Minister Rıfat Serdaroglu, who is responsible from the customs, will prevent the corruption in the custom gates by ''Chinese model.'' Serdaroglu is resolved to change the personnel at the custom gates with a new one within one night.

    CEM:SUCCESS IS DIFFICULT WITHOUT PAYING THE PRICE
    Foreign Minister Ismail Cem said that ''it is difficult to reach success in Cyprus without paying the price, however we pursue a right policy there.''

    TURKEY INVESTS ON ROADS
    Approximately 22,1 percent of the investments made between 1970-1977 in Turkey was spent on roads, bridges and tunnels, while energy investments followed them.

    [03] CHIEF OF GENERAL STAFF GEN. KARADAYI IN ATHENS

    ATHENS, April 6 (A.A) - Chief of General Staff Gen. Ismail Hakkı Karadayı arrived in Athens on Sunday afternoon to participate in West European Union (WEU) Chiefs of General Staff meeting.

    Chiefs of general staff from 18 countries and military representatives of seven countries which are not members of WEU participate in the meeting which is held by Greece on April 7. Greece is the Term President of WEU for the first six months of 1998.

    The decisions, which will be taken during the meetings that will be headed by Greek Chief of General Staff Athanasios Coganis, will later on brought before the WEU Council of Ministers for approval.

    [04] TOURISM MINISTER GURDAL: ''OUR TARGET IS 12 MILLION TOURISTS AND 10 BILLION DOLLARS OF FOREIGN EXCHANGE INCOME THIS YEAR''

    ISPARTA, April 6 (A.A) - Ibrahim Gurdal, the Tourism Minister said on Sunday that they aim 12 million tourists to visit Turkey, so that the latter will gain 10 billion dollars of foreign exchange income this year.

    Responding to questions of journalists, Gurdal stated that touristic installations are centered in coasts of Turkey, adding that ''existing bed capacity in skiing centers is only 6000 in Turkey, our target is to increase this number to 100,000 till the year 2000.''

    Noting that 10 million tourists visited Turkey in 1997 and Turkey gained an income of 8,8 billion dollars of foreign exchange, Ibrahim Gurdal pointed out that ''in Turkey totally 660,000 beds are ready for tourists, we also aim to increase this number to one million in the year 2000.''

    [05] PRIME MINISTER YILMAZ'S MESSAGE FOR RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY: ''TURKEY HAS DETERMINED ITS PRIORITIES AND STARTED A DEVELOPMENT ATTACK''

    ANKARA, April 6 (A.A) - Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz said in his message published for the religious holiday that ''today, Turkey has determined its priorities and started a development attack.''

    ''Development is not a only technical term, it incorporates the integrity of the social life,'' said Yılmaz, adding that Turkey can not take the place it deserves in the international field if it enters the years 2000s with democratic problems.

    Stressing that the ''principle of legal state'' is also an indispensable value just like democracy, Prime Minister Yılmaz stated that ''everybody regardless of religion, ideology, nationality, sects, ideas and gender, needs law. We will not permit manipulation of religion in Turkey and also not allow Turkey to remain behind.''

    [06] RETURN TO VILLAGES AND REHABILITATION PROJECT TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN PROVINCES OF BINGOL, DIYARBAKIR, HAKKARI AND SIRNAK THIS YEAR

    ANKARA, April 6 (A.A) - ''Return to Villages and Rehabilitation Project'' will be implemented in Eastern and Southeastern villages of Turkey beginning from this year, it is reported on Monday.

    Responding to questions of A.A correspondent, State Minister Salih Yıldırım stated that this project will be implemented totaly in 23 villages of Eastern and Southeastern provinces of Bingol, Diyarbakır, Hakkari and Sırnak.

    Noting that the project will cost approximately 1,57 trillion Turkish liras, Yıldırım pointed out that ''this project includes measures, which will provide rural infrastructure, social infrastructure and employment opportunities for those people who wish to return to their villages.''

    Pointing out that the project will not only be limited to four provinces, Yıldırım stressed that ''I would like to underline the fact that the evacuated places in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia are more than it is guessed. 1579 villages were evacuated.''

    Yıldırım said that important things can not done in Eastern and Southeastern Turkey in respect of economy, society and security, unless people return to their villages.

    ''Return to Village Project is a basic factor that will decrease the pressure in economy, it will lead local people to be productive again. This project will save local people to commit crime,'' said Yıldırım, noting that 9124 people from 1074 families will return to their villages in the first stage.

    [07] OPERATION IN SOUTHEASTERN TURKEY - SIX TERRORISTS KILLED, FOUR CAPTURED AND SEVEN OTHERS SURRENDER

    DIYARBAKIR, April 6 (A.A) - Security Forces killed six terrorists, captured four others and seven terrorists surrendered to security forces during the operations staged in Southeastern Turkey, it is reported on Monday.

    State of Emergency Regional Governor's Office said that six terrorists were killed and one terrorist was wounded during the operations staged near Kursunlu village of Diyarbakır.

    Security Forces captured four terrorists in Silvan and Ergani townships of Diyarbakır and in Pertek township of Tunceli province.

    Seven terrorists who escaped from the separatist terrorist organization, surrendered to security forces in Kulp and Lice townships of Diyarbakır, in Sırnak, in Guclukonak township of Sırnak and Tunceli.

    The number of terrorists who surrender to security forces has increased and operations are underway in the region.

    [08] TURKEY EVALUATES OFFERS CONCERNING TANK PROJECT WORTH OF 7,5 BILLION DOLLARS

    ANKARA, April 6 (A.A) - Turkey is evaluating proposals for a 7,5 billion dollars project to build 1000 tanks for the Turkish army, it is reported on Monday.

    Undersecretariat for Defense Industry (SSM) officials said they were analysing data sent by companies from 11 countries which sought a role in the deal.

    The officials stated that the Land Forces need new and modern tanks, adding that if such a project is not implemented now, the army will have no chance other than buying tanks from other countries after 20 years.

    ''Once the evaluation has been completed, files on the call to tender will be prepared and sent to companies,'' the officials said.

    Production is expected to begin in Turkey at the turn of the century. Aside from the manufacture of 1000 main battle tanks, the project would also encompass the modernisation of 650 existing tanks, the officials said.

    [09] VURAL, THE TURKISH AMBASSADOR TO GERMANY: ''FURTHER STEPS SHOULD BE TAKEN FOR DEVELOPMENT OF TURKISH SOCIETY IN GERMANY''

    BONN, April 6 (A.A) - Volkan Vural, the Turkish Ambassador to Germany said in his message published for the religious holiday that further steps should be taken for development of Turkish society living in Germany.

    ''This is a long, dynamic and changing process and during this process the voice of our citizens, who get organized within democratic structures in Germany, will inevitably be heard. On the one hand, Turkish people in Germany will protect their identity and values; on the other hand they will further adjust themselves to the society they are living and have effective roles in this society,'' Vural added.

    [10] ATTACK AGAINST TURKISH GRAVES IN WESTERN THRACE

    COMOTINI, April 6 (A.A) - Graves, belonging to parents of Ismail Rodoplu, who is an independent deputy in Western Thrace, were damaged by unknown people, it is reported on Monday.

    Villagers saw that the graves were damaged and their marbles were broken.

    Rodoplu said that the attack was launched just before the religious holiday, adding that such kinds of attacks had earlier been seen in Western Thrace.

    Rodoplu stressed that the Greek police could not find those who are responsible for such kind of attacks.
