The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG) in Alexandroupolis-Greece (www.mbg.duth.gr), one of the newest departments of Democritus University of Thrace, operates with the vision of becoming a centre of research and training excellence, fostering research on the molecular and genetic basis of Human diseases and the understanding of basic biological questions.

We are currently advancing the areas of bioimaging and biomolecular interaction analysis by setting up the Cell Imaging and Biomolecular Interactions (CiBit) facility unit as part of BioStrength, a 1m project funded by the EC under the Research Potential-2008-1 programme of FP7- Capacities. CiBit will incorporate state-of-the art instruments for advanced cellular imaging and the characterization of in vitro macromolecular interactions, starting with a spinning disc confocal microscope with FRAP, FRET and TIRF modules and an automated multiplex SPR optical biosensor.

In the framework of BioStrength and CiBit, we invite applications for a team of scientists as follows:

1. Two (2) senior research scientists with greater than eight years of research experience (after obtaining their Bachelors degree) and a strong background in Molecular Biology, Protein Biochemistry, Biophysics or related field. The successful candidates will work closely with MBG faculty and with external collaborators from Greece and abroad and be responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of CiBit facility, the design and implementation of advanced experimental procedures and protocols, data analysis, technology transfer and training workshops, among others. Previous work experience in similar facilities, demonstrated experience in confocal microscopy, biophysical methods and screening, interdisciplinarity and a strong publication record in related fields will be a significant plus. Qualified applicants should hold a PhD in the Biosciences or Physical Sciences. The appointment will be up to a maximum total period of 30 months, starting Fall 2009. The maximum gross annual salary amounts 36.000 .

2. Two (2) research scientists with a minimum of four years of research experience (after obtaining their Bachelors degree). The successful candidates will work closely with MBG faculty and with external collaborators from Greece and abroad and will be responsible for performing collaborative and independent research and providing service support to CiBit users, the experimental design/development and optimal implementation of projects run in the CiBit facility, data interpretation and analysis, setting-up, running and maintaining standard methods and protocols and taking part in training sessions, among others. Interdisciplinary experience in modern methods for cloning, protein expression/purification/analysis, RT-PCR and cell/tissue cultures is highly desirable. Qualified applicants should hold a recent PhD/MSc in the Biosciences or Physical Sciences. The appointment will be up to a maximum total period of 24 months, starting Fall/Winter 2009. The maximum gross annual salary amounts 27.000 .

The working contract for both types of positions will be fixed-term. Applications including a full CV with list of publications, synopsis of research experience, letters of recommendation or contact details for referees and any other related document should be posted to:
