The UFZ-Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle GmbH located in Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg is a member of the Helmholtz-Association (HGF).

The Department of Environmental Microbiology at the UFZ-Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig/Halle is looking for a PhD Student to work within a collaborative project in the frame of the UFZ-Research Theme 'Microbial Diversity in Environment and Health'. The PhD student will work on the sub-project "Community structure of protists in polluted groundwater systems and their interaction with pollutant-degrading bacteria" starting July 1, 2004, for a period of three years.

This PhD project is going to tackle the question how protistan community composition and trophic structures are related in polluted groundwater systems. Major objectives of this work will include (1) to reveal the in situ diversity and distribution of selected protistan taxa in groundwater ecosystems in relation to geohydrochemical parameters and the contaminant plume, (2) to study the interaction of protists with attached and free-living bacteria in the aquifer plume and (3) to analyze the effect of protistan grazing on active bacterial populations and the flow of pollutants.

The successful candidate should hold a diploma or masters degree in microbiology, genetics, biology, or a related subject. She or he should have a strong background in molecular microbiology and interest in laboratory and field work. Good knowledge of English is required.

The place of work is Leipzig, Germany.

Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level (BAT-O, IIa/2).
