The School of Engineering at the University of Cyprus is pleased to announce a new round of open academic positions. Attached below is the preliminary announcement of ten faculty positions in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Architecture. The deadline for submission of application materials is January 3, 2003.

The School of Engineering at the University of Cyprus, while still in its infancy, has the long-term goal of being established as a first-class Engineering School in the Meditterrenean and European area. In September 2003, it will admit its first undergraduate students in the Depts of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, and Civil & Environmental Engineering, as well as the first graduate students in the Depts of Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering.

The University of Cyprus announces 3 academic positions at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and 7 academic positions at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor for the newly developed Faculty of Engineering:

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING

Two positions at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL AND INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

One position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor

Two positions at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

One position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor

Two positions at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

One position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor

DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE OR DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

One position at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor in the field of Architecture.

All openings are either tenured or tenure track positions, with the possibility of starting immediately after hiring. Holding a citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus is not a requirement. The official languages of the University are Greek and Turkish. For the above positions knowledge of Greek is necessary.

The candidates should hold a PhD degree from a recognized University in the specific field of study. Requirements for each academic rank depend on the candidate’s years of academic experience, the research record and scientific contributions, involvement in teaching and in the development of high quality undergraduate and graduate curricula. The University of Cyprus is the only accredited university in Cyprus. Since its inception in 1989, it has been growing steadily by developing new programs of study and research in many areas of interest. As a result, the University of Cyprus is becoming an important educational institution both in Cyprus and in the surrounding area.

The University of Cyprus is currently in the process of moving into a newly constructed campus with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. It is anticipated that the Faculty of Engineering will be relocating to their facilities in the new campus within the next 3-4 years.

The University of Cyprus is committed to the development of a world-class Faculty of Engineering with clearly defined mission that includes excellence in teaching and state-of-the-art research with demonstrable societal contributions. An important role of the Faculty of Engineering is to help promote areas of technological growth that can lead to a new industrial base. Although, areas of specialization are not specified, preference will be given to candidates with interests and expertise in high-growth research areas.

The successful candidates will have the unique and challenging opportunity to become part of the team that will develop and build a high quality, innovative and dynamic Faculty of Engineering that will serve the needs of Cyprus for many years to come.

The annual gross salary for these positions (including the 13th salary) is:

Professor             (Scale A15-A16)        CY £28.664 - CY £37.261
Associate Professor   (Scale A14-A15)        CY £25.283 - CY £34.467
Assistant Professor   (Scale A13-A14)        CY £23.587 - CY £31.816
Lecturer              (Scale A12-A13)        CY £19.919 - CY £29.175
(At present CY£1 = 1.7390 Euro and CY£1= 1.7129 Dollars).

In addition, the University of Cyprus may approve an annual bonus of up to CY £ 7000 per year for persons appointed as Professors and up to CY £ 4000 for persons appointed as Associate Professors.

Interested individuals must submit the following items by Friday 3rd of January 2003:

1. A letter stating the department, the academic rank or ranks for which the applicant is interested in and the date when he/she may be able to assume duties in the event of selection.

2. A Curriculum Vitae (6 copies).

3. A brief summary of past research accomplishments and future research plans (up to 1500 words 6 copies).

4. A list of publications (6 copies).

5. Copies of the three most representative publications (6 copies).

6. Copies of degree certificates.

In addition, the applicants must ask three academic referees to send letters of recommendation directly to the University; the names and addresses of these referees must be submitted with the application. Additional confidential information may be sought. The letters of recommendation must reach the University by Friday 3rd of January 2003

If candidates have had letters of recommendation sent to the University of Cyprus in the past three years, they have the option of instructing the Selection Committee to use the old letters. In such case, please indicate in the letter your permission to use the letters already on file. The Curriculum Vitae and the statement of previous work and plans should be written in Greek and in one international language, preferably English.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.
