Following is a letter announcing the availability of several academic positions at the University of Thrace (Alexandroupolis), Greece. Prospective applicants should contact either Dr. Sandaltzopoulos or Mr. Asimakopoulos, as indicated in the letter.

POSITION OPENINGS IN THE NEW DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND GENETICS

Alexandroupolis, GREECE

15 February 2002

I should like to bring to your attention recent developments at the University of Thrace (Alexandroupolis), which have created opportunities for several excellent young Greek scientists in the life sciences to return to Greece, in an environment where they can be productive and contribute substantially. I would be grateful if you could publicize these opportunities among people that would be appropriate, sharing with them this letter.

A new Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics has been established recently in Alexandroupolis, where a Medical School and a regional Hospital are already in operation. The first three positions at MBG have been filled recently by Dr. R. Sandaltzopoulos (Assistant Professor in Molecular Biology), Dr. A. Apostolidis (Assistant Professor in Genetics) and Dr. K. Fylaktakidou (Assistant Professor in Chemistry). A number of positions are available of which five have been advertised, with a deadline for applications: 18 March 2002. The positions will cover the following areas: Biochemistry (Professor or Associate Professor), Biotechnology (Professor or Associate Professor), Molecular Immunology (Associate Professor or Assistant Professor), Molecular Microbiology (Associate Professor or Assistant Professor), Bioinformatics (Assistant Professor or Lecturer).

The new Department has already secured spacious labs and a budget sufficient to cover the infrastructure of major equipment. The quality of the first people appointed, the enthusiasm and quality of incoming students, as well as prospects for collaboration of the new Department with the local Hospital, create a promising setting. The presence of the School of Medicine on the same campus provides additional opportunities for synergy.

The three cities of Thrace (Alexandroupolis, Komotini and Xanthi) are all within an hour by car. They have one of the highest growth rates in Europe in terms of GDP per capita. In particular, Alexandroupolis is a city of 60,000 people, with an important harbor, nearby energy nodes (the major gas pipeline for Greece), and several significant companies in the agricultural and forestry sector. The University, with 2,000 students so far, has a notable influence in the city. The region is attractive and includes well-known national parks such as the Evros river estuaries and the forest of Dadia. There are several daily flights between Athens and Alexandroupolis. Direct connections to major European cities are possible from the international airport of Chrysoupolis, located about 120 Km away. Thessaloniki is 3.5 hours away by car. In the summer, rapid boats (Flying Dolphins) connect to Samothraki, Thassos, Limnos and other islands in the Aegean sea.

The new Department wishes to attract young, inspired and energetic scientists and aims to become a center of excellence. My contact with the Department is Dr. Raphael Sandaltzopoulos, who obtained his Ph.D. with Peter Becker at EMBL and did his postdoctoral work with Carl Wu at the N.I.H. Interested scientists should contact him directly (raphaels@otenet.gr). Additional information can be obtained at (http://www.duth.gr/ ) or by contacting the Secretary of the Department, Mr. D. Asimakopoulos (tel. +30-551-040401).
