Research Fellowship in Stem Cell Engineering

A fellowship has become available at the Unit of Bioengineering, University of Louvain, Belgium for a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate.

Research subject : Development of a new bioreactor concept for the controlled culture and differentiation of embryonic stem cells

Duration : 2 years, renewable for 2 more (Ph.D. fellowship)

Project Director : Professor S.N. AGATHOS (phone: +32 (0) 10 47 36 44, fax: +32 (0) 10 47 36 44 or e-mail: agathos@gebi.ucl.ac.be)

Description : The project seeks to establish large-scale in vitro production of cells differentiated into functional tissue starting from embryonic stem (ES) cells by combining cell biology principles and current cell culture engineering strategies. A key objective is to carry out continuously all steps of cell differentiation within a single bioreactor vessel of appropriate design. The project will be carried out within the Cell Bioengineering Group, an association between the Unit of Bioengineering and the Unit of Biochemistry.

Background sought : (Bio)chemical engineer, (micro)biologist, (bio)chemist or agronomist with a strong background in cell biology or bioprocess engineering ; academically competitive ; able to further develop multidisciplinary skills at the interface of bioengineering and cell biology, with an appreciation of quantitative approaches.

Experience required : Good technical skills in cell culture and bio/molecular techniques highly desirable; aware of the complexity of differentiating cell systems. Prior work experience is not required but will be considered an asset.

Primary language : English. A basic knowledge of French is encouraged for social purposes.

Other requirements : Complete academic transcripts and two letters of recommendation.
