Modern Greek History

The Department of History (Faculty of Arts) invites applications for a visiting professorship in Modern Greek History, beginning 1 July 2002. The successful candidate must be an established scholar in Modern Greek History with a focus of specialization in one of three areas: Political History, Social History, or International Relations.

Research qualifications include a completed PhD, or equivalent, and an ongoing program of research in the area of specialization. The successful candidate must have a strong record of achievement in research, teaching, and supervision at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and is expected to provide leadership in the development of a focus area in Modern Hellenic Studies. The ability to develop links with the broader Hellenic Canadian community will be considered an asset. Fluency in Modern Greek at the near native level and in English is required.

The candidate will be appointed to the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts and may be affiliated with the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies. Courses taught will also be part of the European Studies program. Rank is open. Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. The appointment will be for one or two years, and is renewable, until the Hellenic Chair in Modern Greek History is established. This visiting professorship and the Chair have been endowed by the Hellenic Heritage Foundation, the Greek community of Metropolitan Toronto, and York University. This search and the appointment of a visiting professor is intended to highlight York Universitys growing interest in Hellenic Studies. The Chair is expected to be established by 31 December 2002.
