VACANCY FOR A RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN THE AREA OF:

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING FOR DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS

The Department of Computer Science of the University of Cyprus announces a new position for a Research Associate within the research project "MEDICATE: The Control, Identification, and Delivery of Prescribed Medication", funded by the E.U.'s IST Programme of FP5. The position are initially for one (1) year renewable up to three (3) years. The annual salary for a Research Associate is in the range of the A8-A10 scale combined (about CY # 9,000 - 16,000, depending on qualifications and prior experience). [At present CY #1 = 1.1 sterlings and CY #1 = 1.6 US dollars, approximately.]

Project MEDICATE aims to develop an innovative care model to assist with compliance to a medication regimen and address problems of non-compliance to prescribed medication regimes. As part of the project, an Internet-based control server will be developed, providing two major functionalities: (1) remote monitoring and control of home-installed devices for dispensing medication to patients; and (2) organization of patient's data in a database and processing of them using a medical expert and decision support system. The above mentioned two positions reflect the needs for these two tasks respectively.

The successful applicant will be involved in the design, development and implementation of the software infrastructure required for the control server to communicate with the remote home-based units for exchanging information. S/He will also be involved in the development of a database for storing patients' data and medical records, and an expert and decision support system for analysing this data.

A suitable candidate should have a first degree in Computer Science or related subject and, preferably, also a sufficiently specialised postgraduare degree. S/He should also be at ease with programming in large scale software projects. Specialisation in any of the following areas will be considered an additional advantage: Internet Technologies, Distributed Systems, Middleware Platforms, Mobile Computing, Databases, Expert Systems, Decision Support Systems.

Applicants need not be citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. Knowledge of the Greek language, although considered a practical advantage, is by no means a requirement. The research activities pursued by the successful applicant can lead to the earning of a Ph.D. if s/he so wishs (in this case, any academic fees for enroling to the Department's Ph.D. programme are waived).
