As part of its current Research Training Networks (RTN) programme it is expected that the European Commission will provide three year funding for a collaborative research network dedicated to the study of sources of gravitational waves. This timely and exciting Network will link the following ten European institutions:

* Max-Planck Institut für Gravitationsphysik, Golm bei Potsdam, Germany. (coordinating partner). * Theoretisch-Physikalisches Institut, University of Jena, Germany. * Observatoire de Paris, Section de Meudon, France. * Departamento de Astronomia y Astrofisica, University of Valencia, Spain. * Departament de Fisica, University of Palma, Spain. * Department of Physics, University of Thessaloniki, Greece. * Dipartimento di Fisica, Universita di Roma "La Sapienza", Italy. * Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati, Trieste, Italy. * Department of Mathematics, Southampton Univesity, UK. * School of Computer Science and Maths, University of Portsmouth, UK.

The Network will undertake theoretical investigations into sources for gravitational wave astronomy, in anticipation of the commissioning of large interferometric antennas early in the next millenium. The research methodology combines large scale computations with approximation techniques. The Network maintains very close collaborations to related astrophysics and parallel computational projects in the US, including a recently funded NSF project to develop an Astrophysical Simulation Collaboratory, based on the Cactus code, that will be used by the Network.

As part of this programme it is planned that approximately seven three-year postdoctoral positions and three three-year predoctoral positions (studentships leading to a PhD degree) will be available in the above institutes. The normal starting date for these posts would be September or October 2000 but it can be possible to have an earlier starting date for the positions in suitable cases. Further details of the project, including profiles for the posts available at each institute, can be found at the Network home page: (http://www.aei-potsdam.mpg.de/research/astro/eu_network/index.html)

According to the rules of the TMR programme, network posts are open only to nationals of a European Union country (and Associated States) different from that in which the post is to be held. Applicants should also be under 36 years of age (30 in the case of pre-docs), and should not have been resident in the country where they propose to work for more than 18 months in the two years before the start of the post.

Postdoctoral salaries and predoctoral fellowships at each institution will be paid in accordance with the local regulations for these positions. Funding will be available for the selected scientists to spend substantial amounts of time in network institutes other than their host (including time in their home countries).

Applications should be sent to the following address:

Edward Seidel Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik Albert-Einstein-Institut Haus 5 Am Mühlenberg 14476 Golm, Germany

For the postdoctoral positions, the preferred deadline is 30 January 2000, but applications will be accepted until positions are filled. Applicants should include a full curriculum vitae, a publication list, a summary of current research interests, and an indication of the particular network posts for which they wish to apply. Three letters of reference are required by this same date.

For the predoctoral positions (research studentships), the closing date is 15 April 2000. Applicants should include: a full curriculum vitae; full details of their university record including a copy of the final degree certificate if a course has already been completed; any other information which the candidate thinks may be useful to us in reaching a decision (a copy of any thesis or report of extensive project work would be welcome). At least one letter of reference is required by the same date.

Applications from women and minorities are particularly welcome.
