Openings for Ph.D. Studies in Turbulence, Mixing, and Control Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering University of California, Irvine.

The Turbulence, Mixing, and Control Group at the University of California, Irvine, (http://www.eng.uci.edu/~catrakis/turb.html) has openings for exceptional individuals interested in pursuing Ph.D. studies in the area of turbulent flows, mixing, and control.

The research emphasis is on fundamental and applications-oriented experimental, computational, and theoretical investigations of transport, mixing, and control in free-shear turbulent flows. The experiments employ advanced quantitative flow-visualization methods based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional digital imaging and laser diagnostic techniques. The computations utilize finite-volume and pseudo-spectral methods in a parallel-programming and multiprocessing environment. The theoretical investigations employ methods of advanced mathematics and physics to study turbulence, mixing, and control.

Strongly-recommended prerequisites are: good foundations in mathematics and physics; experience with experimental and/or computational and/or theoretical techniques in fluid dynamics. Experimental, computational, as well as theoretical projects are available. You are welcome to choose a research topic from the following list that matches your interests:

Experimental research:

  • Imaging of turbulence and mixing in a jet"
  • Imaging of turbulence and mixing in a shear layer"
  • Imaging of turbulence and mixing in a temporal shear layer"
  • Control of turbulence and mixing"

Computational research:

  • Simulation of turbulence and mixing in a spatially-developing jet"
  • Simulation of turbulence and mixing in a spatial shear layer"
  • Simulation of turbulence and mixing in a 2D and 3D temporal shear layer"
  • Simulation of turbulence and mixing control"

Theoretical research:

  • Geometry and dynamics of turbulence"
  • Mixing in vortical, random, and turbulent flows"
  • Pattern formation, flow instability, and turbulence"
  • Theory of turbulence and mixing control"

Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a one-page statement of career interests/objectives, two sample publications or reports, and names of three references. The positions are open as of September 1, 1998, and are scheduled to start in the fall/winter 1998 or spring/summer 1999.
