Research positions in the CS Dept at U. of CyprusJob Opportunities Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <dist@hri.org>Originally From: George Angelos Papadopoulos <george@turing.cs.ucy.ac.cy> UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE JOB ANNOUNCEMENT VACANCIES FOR TWO RESEARCH ASSOCIATES IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: IMAGE PROCESSING AND COMPUTER NETWORKS & DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS AND MULTIMEDIA The Department of Computer Science of the University of Cyprus has two new positions for a Research Associate within the research project "Electronic Roads in the Information Society (ERIS)" funded by the University of Cyprus and external sources. The positions are initially for one (1) year renewable up to three (3) years. The annual salary for a Research Associate is at the A8 scale (about CY # 9,000 but the exact amount will depend on qualifications and prior experience). [At present CY #1 = 1.2 sterling and CY #1 = 1.9 US dollars, approximately.] Project ERIS aims to develop and bring together studies from the areas of high speed computer networks, distributed and multimedia systems and digital libraries to provide a solid foundation for the technological building of electronic roads that can be used for cultural and historical exploration both in space and time. The tasks to be undertaken by the first successful applicant (RA-1) will focus on the design, development and implementation of multimedia data banks and a high speed networks. H/She will also be involved in the development of a top level interface that users will be using to access the system. The tasks to be undertaken by the other successful applicant (RA-2) will be focused on designing and implementing a meta-computing environment for distributed systems that will integrate together and provide interaction between a number of sub-components, each one of them responsible for expressing some functionality of the framework to be developed (dedicated media servers, other special purpose hardware, general purpose software environments, pre- and post-processing filters, etc.). H/She will also be involved in the development of a top level interface that users will be using to access the system. A suitable candidate for the first category of tasks (RA-1) is expected to have a PhD (preferably) or otherwise an MSc in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with emphasis on Image Processing and Analysis and Computer Networks. Additional work experience or knowledge on the development of Multimedia Systems and Internet based technologies, Digital Libraries, and High Speed Multimedia Networks and working knowledge of simulation tools (e.g. OPNET), will be considered as an advantage. A suitable candidate for the second category of tasks (RA-2) is expected to have a PhD (preferably) or a sufficiently specialised MSc in Computer Science or related field from an accredited University with emphasis in one or more of the following areas: Parallel and Distributed Programming, Coordination Models and Languages, Software Engineering, Multimedia Systems. H/She is expected to be highly competent in advanced programming techniques using Unix-based systems. Experience in having used coordination models and languages, previous involvement in related projects and knowledge or appreciation of Multimedia and Internet based technologies (Java, Intranet, CORBA, CSCW, workflow management, Multimedia modelling, etc.) will be considered an advantage.
