GREECE IN BOSTON

Presentation by the Greek Study Group at Harvard University on Reforming the Education of the Muslim Minority in Thrace, Greece

The Greek Study Group, at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University, will feature a presentation on: "'Bridge over Troubled Water': Reforming the Education of the Muslim Minority in Thrace, Greece, on November 14, at 4.15 p.m. – 6 p.m. by Thalia Dragonas, Professor of Social Psychology and Anna Frangoudaki, Professor of Sociology of Education, at the University of Athens.

The presentation will report on a large-scale intervention project aiming at reforming the education of the Muslim minority in Western Thrace that has been implemented by the speakers since 1997. Although the project is a specifically educational one, entailing teaching Greek as a second language, development of educational materials, teacher training and academic outcomes, its essence is deeply political. It involves negotiation of identities and directly embraces the entire Thracian community.

Professor Cemal Kafadar, Department of History, Harvard University, will be the discussant.

Venue: Lower Level Conference Room, Center for European Studies, Harvard University, 27 Kirkland (at Cabot Way), Cambridge
