ONE NIGHT - TWO FASCINATING LECTURES!

Thursday, February 16 6:30 pm

*Understanding Disaster:*

*The Geological Causes of Volcanic Eruptions, Earthquakes and Tsunamis*

Natural disasters have claimed the lives of millions over recorded history and have often been viewed as punishments meted out by angry gods upon humanity. Please join Dr. Janney, as he reveals how these phenomena are actually expressions of the incredibly powerful forces generated by our dynamic planet.

Philip Janney, PhD, Department of Geology, The Field Museum of Natural History

Impact of Modern Tsunamis: Papua New Guinea 1998 & Southeast Asia 2004

Tsunamis, whether caused by earthquakes or volcanic explosions, have tremendous impacts on coastal communities wherever they occur. Robert Welsch and John MacDonald discuss their research about the consequences of the 1998 tsunami at Aitape, Papua New Guinea, which killed one-third of the population of four small communities. Nicholas Taranto considers the impact of the much more devastating recent tsunami that killed more than 150,000 people in Indonesia and Thailand.

Robert Welsch, PhD, Dep't. of Anthropology, Dartmouth College

Jack MacDonald, MS, Field Museum, Chicago

Nicholas Taranto, Senior Fellowship Student, Dartmouth College
