Canadian Member of Parliament warns of possible nuclear destruction in the Eastern Mediterranean

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Turkey is shopping in the global marketplace for a source of nuclear power. Atomic Energy of Canada Limited is trying to sell two CANDU reactors to Turkey. This proposed sale has shocked Canadian Member of Parliament, Jim Karygianni s. He is touring North America to discuss several concerns about Turkey trying to buy two nuclear reactors.

"The proposed installation site is in the Akkuyu Bay region of Turkey which lies near an active fault line. I am appalled that despite the recent catastrophic earthquake, Turkey has declared it intends to proceed with a nuclear reactor purchase," sa id Mr. Karygiannis. "I question the wisdom of proceeding with this plan given the geological and political instability of the region." he added.

Following the spirit of the Greek Patriarch who has been lovingly dubbed "The Green Patriarch", Mr. Karygiannis will discuss these and other issues of concern to the Eastern Mediterranean Diaspora. Also, Mr. Evan Pappas of the Clean Air Council of P hiladelphia will speak about the environmental impacts of electricity generation, and residents' options in the local electric marketplace. Electric choice in Pennsylvania now allows consumers to purchase electricity that does not use nuclear power.

Mr. Karygiannis and Mr. Pappas will speak on Sunday, October 17, 1999, at 11:00 A.M. at the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 256 South 8th Street, (between Spruce & Locust Streets) in Philadelphia. Special seating will be made available for members of the press.
