The Benaki Museum is distinguished as one of the foremost Greek organizations active in the effort to preserve and to protect the cultural heritage of Hellenism.

The Velimezis collection is named after Emilios Velimezis (1902-1946) and consists of 72 post-Byzantine icons, dating from the 15th to the 19th century and coming from various regions in Greece, mostly Crete, the Ionian Islands and Macedonia (incl. Mount Athos). The masterpiece of the collection is Domenicos Theotokopoulos's (known as El Greco) "Christ's Passion-Pieta".

The Benaki Museum's CD-ROM "The Conservation of Icons in the Velimezis Collection" contains information on the subject that has never before been presented. It has been in exhibitions in Athens, London and the USA and has won the title of the most successful CD-ROM in Greece for 1998. By giving a full picture of the works in the Velimezis collection and a unique description of their conservation and their scientific study, it offers valuable new evidence on ecclesiastical painting after the Fall of Constaninople in 1453.
